This hot spring town was once called Kyushu’s inner sanctum, but is now declining due to a lack of successors. The location is Oguni Town in Aso County, Kumamoto Prefecture. I will be staying at Tsuetate Onsen, a hot spring town that suddenly appears in the mountains. This is my second visit, but I have never stayed there before, so I booked a special room at a popular inn in the hot spring town. In any case, it is a Showa retro hot spring town with a unique townscape that is unlike any other. We will stop by tourist spots along the way. Our first destination is Takamori Town, a member of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Japan” Association. It is located in the southeastern part of the Aso Caldera and has a vast grassland covering 2,200 hectares. As you may have already noticed, we will stop by Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine, which is also famous as a filming location for “Rurouni Kenshin”. We have arrived. This is the parking lot for Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine. The shrine is only a short walk away, so let’s head there right away. I visited there a long time ago, but not much has changed. It seems that a cafe and a restaurant have opened here. The shrine is right here. I think the entrance was in front of the post office. It still has a great atmosphere. There is something spooky beyond the torii gate. Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine The shrine begins with a path that is surrounded by deep forest and never reaches the sun. We walk about 300 meters up the mountain path, feeling the mystery and nature. There are nearly 100 stone lanterns lined up on the path, and a mossy world spreads out before us. The deities enshrined are Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto. The shrine is dedicated to “Ishikimi Daishogun”, a spirit that was separated from Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine. Once you see the second torii gate, you can see the main shrine building ahead. Beyond the second torii gate, a mysterious world of moss spreads out. The shrine was built quite a long time ago, and was moved from Kumano in Kishu. It was burned down in the war during the Tensho era, and the current one was built in 1722. Continue deeper into the forest. Up ahead is Ugetoiwa . You can see a large wind hole measuring more than 10m in length and width. There is a legend that Onihachihoshi, who was chased by Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto, kicked through the mountain folds and escaped to this wind hole. As a large wind hole runs through a huge rock mountain, it is said to be a symbol of being able to achieve any goal, no matter how difficult it is, and is said to bring good luck in passing exams and winning. I visited Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine. It is a very mysterious place. It feels a little scary when you go there during the dim light hours, but when it gets light, it’s a shrine that makes you want to visit in the summer. Now, let’s head to our next destination. Let’s depart. 17km east to west, 25km north to south, the world’s largest caldera. Overwhelmed by the majestic scenery, we head to our next destination. Next, we head to the popular tourist spot “Nabegataki”. We’re almost there. 300m to go. Is it a famous waterfall? There were so many reviews. Over 3000. Ah, I see… It’s really popular… It’s surprising… There are so many customers that I’ll stop taking pictures here. Cars are coming in one after another… I found a great waterfall nearby, so I’ll head in that direction. This is it. We arrived at Shimonjonotaki waterfall. It takes 7 or 8 minutes from Nabegataki. The previous waterfall was full of customers, but there are no customers here. It’s private. Now, let’s go see the waterfall right away. The waterfall is this way. I can already hear the sound of the waterfall. Judging from the sound of this waterfall, it seems to have a lot of water. There’s a road right next to it. This is the promenade. It looks like we’ll go down from here. “The handrail is old and dangerous. Please be careful.” Scary… Oh! Amazing. Is this a waterfall?! If so, it’s a very unfortunate spot… I see! It looks pretty amazing from below. A suspension bridge appears. This looks like another waterfall. I wonder if it’s called Nabegama Falls. It’s pretty impressive, but it may be hard to convey in a video. Wow! Amazing! You may not be able to get to the bottom of the waterfall. There is no promenade. This is also a promenade, so I’ll go there. Amazing! It’s like a little Niagara Falls. This is the best view spot. It’s amazing, but you can’t see it… You can see it through the trees, but… You can’t see the whole thing. It’s a very impressive waterfall, but it’s a shame that you can’t see it up close. I couldn’t see the whole waterfall from here, but it seems there is an observation deck on the other side, so I’d like to go and see it. Is this it? The parking lot. This is the parking lot I went to earlier. I walked around from here and came here. It was a place that you could easily walk to from the parking lot. There seems to be an observation deck up ahead that you can see nearby, but you can’t get there now. This is the Shimoshiro Falls waterfall viewing terrace. Behind this was a huge ginkgo tree. There’s nothing to compare its size to in the video, so it may not be possible to convey its power, but it’s estimated to be about 700 to 1000 years old. It’s amazing! Let’s take a look around a bit. The Great Ginkgo Tree of Shimoshiro. It’s 20m tall, 34m east to west, and 40m north to south. The ginkgo tree doesn’t fit in the frame, so I’ll stand in front of it and compare its size. What do you think? I couldn’t get any closer to the ginkgo tree, so it might be hard to tell, but it ‘s really quite large. There are a lot of ginkgo nuts fallen. I wonder if it’s possible for just this one tree to produce such amazing ginkgo nuts. In front of the ginkgo tree is a mysterious building. I wonder if it’s an internal medicine clinic that makes soy sauce and miso while also producing kakuwata? This is Shimoshiro Falls. Shimoshiro Falls is a spectacular waterfall with a drop of about 28m that cascades down a cliff. It is not as popular as Nabega Falls, but its stately appearance is worth seeing. There is a deep-looking cave beside the waterfall basin. Beyond this waterfall, you can see Nabegama Falls and a pothole. Eroded over the years, you can feel the mystery of nature. You can feel how amazing it is even from here. There is a cave behind the waterfall. It looks quite deep. I would like to go there if I could. This was also a very impressive waterfall. However, it is a bit far to the waterfall. I think it would be fine if you just wanted to stop by and take a look. Now, let’s head towards Tsuetate Onsen. It ‘s 4.7km from here and takes 8 minutes to get there. It took 6 minutes from here. It took 6 minutes from here. After a short drive, the scenery changed to a deep mountain scenery. The hot spring town is along the valley where the Tsuetate River flows. And the hot spring town suddenly appears. If you turn here, you will reach Tsuetate Onsen. If you go to the right, it seems that you can bring your pets into the onsen. From here, the townscape becomes unique. We arrived at Tsuetate Onsen. It has a retro atmosphere. Tsuetate Onsen was founded around 1800, making it a very old hot spring town. The name Tsuetate dates back to the Heian period, when a traveling monk visited this area, he was so impressed by the hot spring’s effects that he stood up his walking stick, and leaves began to grow from the joints of the stick. It’s like an anime or a Ghibli world. It seems to have been called Kyushu’s inner parlor from the early to mid-Showa period. It flourished as a hot spring entertainment district, but with the collapse of the bubble economy, the number of visitors seems to have decreased. It has come to this point since the collapse of the bubble. According to the inn’s staff, the main reason for the decline is a lack of successors, but they say that because they have seen their parents since they were young and know how difficult the hospitality business is, they take other jobs or leave the town. Here at Tsuetate Onsen, flood damage is also a major reason. When it was bustling, many geishas could be seen in this hot spring town. This is the public bath and this is the steam room. It looks really hot. It’s bubbling . There is a foot bath here. This is it. The foot bath looks like this. You can rest here. There is also a foot bath here, but it doesn’t seem to be filled with water. There are various items for sale next to the foot bath. They sell eggs, sweet potatoes, and towels. What’s going on? What’s going on ? What’s going on? What? What? You don’t need to come over here. What’s going on? Rolling around. What is this behavior? I still have some time before check-in, so I’ll take a walk around this area. I’m sure if I went to the right, there was the remains of an elementary school. There’s no one there. I think this area is probably vacant. This is it. The remains of an elementary school. It says Japan Shaolin Martial Arts School. “Teutate Gateball Court” is really retro. When the wind blows, the windows rattle. Apparently there’s a senior citizens’ club coming up, and they said I could look inside, so I’ll take a look. Is this a gym? There’s some sort of fitness equipment. It smells really dusty. It’s like the smell of a nostalgic old school. Wow! Amazing! It says Shaolin Martial Arts School, but it seems to only be held about once a year. People come from China and other places. Let’s go up to the second floor. It’s creaking. The floor looks like it’s going to collapse. It’s a storage room. I wonder if the floor will collapse? There’s a carp streamer festival, and it seems like they store them here. Carp streamers. *It seems like each company that participates in the festival stores them. There’s a blackboard and things like that. It’s now a storage room, though. “Main conference room” This is also now a storage room. Wow! Amazing! The floor looks like it’s going to collapse. Scary! What is this door? It seems to be the same as it was back then. I’m curious about what’s inside . There’s another door. There’s a door that looks like a Buddhist altar. What is it? I’ll leave it at that. Since I’m here, I’ll pretend to be the principal. This is the view from the principal’s perspective. But it’s lonely because there are no students. I’ll go down the stairs here. It’s a really small school. I think there were only a few students. This is the Tsuetate branch of the old Shimoshiro Elementary School. Now this place is bustling with the senior citizens’ association. It’s kind of heartwarming. It was really good. This side looks like an evacuation shelter. This is the Oguni Town Tsuetate Disaster Prevention Center. It was a really good experience. It’s not often that you can get into an elementary school like that. There are a few houses here and there. I don’t know if anyone lives there. It’s around 2pm. There are really no people here. It’s such a nice place. It’s a great place for retro lovers. Steam is rising everywhere. There’s a natural hot spring over there. I’ll go and take a look. The river flows really fast here. I don’t remember if it was heavy rain last time I came here, but this road was flooded. This is also a steaming area. You can steam eggs or something. This river seems to be quite deep. This is the free mixed bathing hot spring. You can see it completely. There is no one here now so I’ll take a look. It looks like this. Is it warm? Is it a little lukewarm? It feels like about 38 degrees. There is a fee box here, so it may not be free. There is no price written, so I wonder. You can’t see the bath from here, but you can see it completely from here. Above this hot spring is a retro alley. It’s quite retro. This side is swallowed up by nature like this. If you cross this bridge, you can go to the other side. This is an inn. I’m not sure if it’s okay to go through. This is Yakushiyu. 200 yen per person. It’s ridiculously cheap. This one seems unmanned. There is a sign that says, “There is a bathing box in the bathhouse, so please put in 200 yen per person and enjoy your bath.” It is open from 8am to 6pm. Is this a drinking fountain? There is no sign that says you can drink it, so I can’t say for sure. It looks like a maze like this. I came out onto the road. This is the only convenience store in this hot spring town. I think it’s called R Shop. They sell a lot of souvenirs. I’ll go to the opposite bank of the river from before. It’s a very old sign. This is it. There are an incredible number of votive plaques. It seems like there are more votive plaques than when I was here before. I think there used to be buildings around here, but they’ve been demolished. This is what it looks like. There weren’t any barricades like this before, but they’ve been put up now . Maybe there are a lot of trespassers. This is also a ruin. The flow of the river is amazing. It hasn’t rained, so I think it’s usually like this. This seems to be Yakushi-dori. I’ll go. There must have been buildings around here, too, on Yakushi -dori . It’s now vacant. I wonder if they’re demolishing things one after another. I can’t quite remember what it was like the last time I was here. There’s also a hot spring here. This one seems to be unmanned as well. It seems to be open from 8am to 9pm. There’s no one there, so I’ll take a look. I wonder if it’s not open anymore… It looks like this. There’s no hot water, and it looks like a ruin. The exterior is beautiful, but… This place is also vacant. It looks like this. I think this inn is called “Fukumi”, and it looks quite nice. And it’s not that expensive. This is Yakushido. I didn’t come this way last time, so it’s interesting. It seems like Yakushi-dori continues over there. I’ll go through here. I don’t know if this area was also houses or inns… I just came out here. There are no customers at all, but there are many inns . Personally, I really like this retro feel. There is a steaming area here too. I like that it’s free to use. Most places charge money. I cross the bridge and go to the other side again. It looks like a pretty big hot spring town. I think it has a nice atmosphere. There are ramen restaurants here. I wonder if they’re open? It looks like they might be open. I’m heading to the inn I’m staying at for the night. I’m almost there though. The building looks a little old, but it looks like the parking lot is here. We have arrived. This is the inn called “Dai Shizen”. Let’s check in right away. The front desk and lobby look like this. The front desk is over there, and the lobby is here. This is the elevator. It’s a shiny gold elevator. The emergency stairs and smoking area are at the back left. Opposite the front desk are souvenirs. Next to the front desk is the dining area called “Green House”. First, head towards the room. It’s on the 7th floor. This is a room on the 7th floor. This is an 8-story inn. Over there are the guest rooms. This is the room I’ll be staying in, special room 701. The emergency stairs are on the left, so it’s a corner room. Let’s go in right away. Although I’ve been in there once before. First of all, the entrance looks like this. It’s a very spacious entrance. I haven’t seen this, so I wonder what it is. I wonder if it’s for putting luggage. This is the toilet. From the entrance, it looks like this. It feels like a house. There is a huge, regular household refrigerator here. The top is a freezer. They have beer and wine, all of which you can have for free. Next to the refrigerator is a sink. There is a sink, a pot, and even a microwave. Below this are placemats, plates, forks, and other things. Here are the cups. The entrance looks like this. There is an entrance, a refrigerator, a sink, and a home cooking appliance. This is… this is the bathroom, but I’ll show you the room first. It looks like this. I’ve already left my luggage there . This is the inn called “Dai Shizen”. This is the closet. There is a safe below, and here are the bath towels and towels. They provide yukatas. There is a fairly large TV. This is what the room looks like. And from here you can see the view. The buildings have been demolished, making it look lonely. The inn directly opposite and the hotel across the street are in ruins. The view from this side is a bit disappointing. It’s not that this inn is bad or anything. Enter through the entrance and this is the door. This is the bath. There is a sink. Bath towels and towels are prepared here too. There are also two sinks. There is a cleansing oil called DHC, face wash, gel lotion, and silky gel. Is this for men? I think this is probably for men and this is for women. This is the bath, but there is a door here too. It is a hidden room. It has a fairly large space like this. I think you can see the scenery from this shoji screen as well. You can see the scenery like this. This is nice. There are sweets attached to it. They are a famous Oita sweet, but this is Kumamoto… because it is the prefectural border between Kumamoto and Oita. So the hidden room looks like this. It is a bath… but it is a wooden bath. It doesn’t smell, but it is a wooden bathtub. And this one… this one is the best. This one has a semi-open-air bath. This is luxurious. The sound of the river is really loud… but birds are flying. It has a semi-open-air bath like this. This is the best. You can bathe at any time you like, from check-in to check-out. However, the hot spring here is not 100% natural. The temperature is slightly adjusted. It’s not 100%, but it does contain the hot spring water here. Is there anyone who uses this? I would definitely bathe here. This is a guide map of the building. The second floor is the guest rooms and the large banquet hall. The third floor has the guest rooms and restaurants. The fourth floor is the front desk. The fourth floor is the lobby, front desk, green house, and smoking area. The fifth to eighth floors are the guest rooms. This inn has several affiliated stores in this hot spring town, and it seems that the main building is just across the street. In the main building, there seems to be a shop, a lounge, and even a bowling alley. The main building is a 3-4 minute walk from here, and I received a free bowling service ticket that can be used in the main building. There is a hot spring called Kissho no Yu at the entrance to this hot spring town, and you can enter it for free. I was given a ticket to enter for free. All the hot springs here are open-air baths. The bathing fee is 1600 yen, but you can enter for free. There is also a family bath, but it will cost you separately. Kissho-no-Yu is open until 11pm, and there is a shuttle bus. It is about 1km from here, so you can go by car, but there is a shuttle bus. You can also enjoy this hot spring, so please try it if you stay here. From the photos, it was a pretty nice open-air bath. This time, the room has an open-air bath, and I have a lot of things to do, so I won’t go in this time. It seems that you can also enter the hot spring in the main building. There is also a Hizenya hot spring here. You can also enter this one, and there is Higo-no-Yu and Bungo-no-Yu, and Higo-no-Yu is in Kumamoto Prefecture, but Bungo-no-Yu is in Oita Prefecture , so it seems that you can enjoy the hot springs of Kumamoto Prefecture and Oita Prefecture. The price of this room was about 90,000 yen. There was a Jalan campaign going on, and I had about 2,000 points, so I used those points and paid about 69,000 yen . If the campaign hadn’t been going on, I probably wouldn’t have stayed in this room. I want to go in while it’s still light out. The spring quality is a weak alkaline simple hot spring. It’s luxurious. All you can hear is the sound of the river flowing. You can take your time in the bath without worrying about time. Now, let’s go to the large bath. The large bath is on the first floor. There are also the East Bath, the West Bath, and the open-air bath. This way. The women’s bath and the men’s bath. This is the changing room, and there are lockers with locks here. The bath was really good. There were 12 washing areas and 4 or 5 sinks. The open-air bath was also quite large. Since it’s in the mountains, the open-air bath was also blown in by the cold wind, which felt really good. By the way, the spring quality is an alkaline simple hot spring. I wasn’t sure about the temperature of the spring, but it was a little hot. The other guests may have gone to Kissho no Yu. We had the place to ourselves. It’s sad to see this inn go out of business in this charming hot spring town. We headed to dinner. I’ll explain briefly. The small dish was jade eggplant with Rikyu sauce. The appetizers were horse sashimi, broccoli with sake kasu sauce, grilled shrimp with herbs, Ichimonji Guru Guru, and sweetfish simmered in syrup. The drink in the red sake cup is yuzu juice, so please enjoy it as we do not serve alcohol. The appetizers look like this . After all, it is Kumamoto, so there is horse sashimi. This shrimp also looks incredibly delicious. First, yuzu honey juice. Delicious! It’s really strong. It’s like drinking the original juice. I ordered ginger ale. From the broccoli. It’s delicious. This sauce is delicious. Sweetfish simmered in syrup. I want rice… It’s jade eggplant. It’s fragrant. The unique aroma of eggplant? Let’s eat the horse sashimi. Is this foamy soy sauce? Let’s eat. Oh, there’s shiso leaves wrapped inside. There’s no smell or anything. It’s very chewy. This is soup. What’s this? Cod milt? Sweet sea bream? Sweet sea bream in soup is so luxurious. It’s delicious! It ‘s gentle. It’s been a while since I ate fish. I ‘m hungry so I’m eating it fast. This is sashimi. Tuna, squid, and sea bream. They said you can eat sea bream with ponzu sauce. Is it okay to eat it with momiji oroshi and ponzu sauce? It’s like eating puffer fish. First with wasabi soy sauce. It’s really cold. It’s delicious. I’ll eat it with ponzu sauce and momiji oroshi. Ah! It’s delicious! It’s so delicious that I can’t choose. The wasabi soy sauce is delicious, and the ponzu sauce is delicious. But I often have the opportunity to eat it with wasabi soy sauce, so I’ll eat it with ponzu sauce. The ponzu sauce and maple leaf oroshi are so delicious! It’s too delicious! I only ate sea bream. I also had tuna. I always eat tuna, but sea bream made an impact . I just realized that the soy sauce is sweet. I’ve been in Kyushu so much that I’ve eaten it without feeling strange, but when I think about it, sashimi soy sauce is sweet. I’ll eat this squid wrapped in shiso leaves. It’s the last slice. I’m sad. There’s crab in it. I’m looking forward to this. Is this soup stock? There are still more dishes coming. It’s a stew of spiny lobster. Salt-koji grilled golden-eyed snapper, Bungo beef sukiyaki, and even kuruma shrimp. Kuruma shrimp tempura, crab rice pot, red soup stock, assorted pickles, and dessert that looks like fruit. This is a spiny lobster with ingredients. The food is more luxurious than I expected. I didn’t expect spiny lobster to come out. Wow! Delicious! Rich! This elasticity, and the more I chew, the more shrimp flavor I get… I think the food was the standard plan, but it was pretty luxurious, and the sun was setting nicely. It feels even more retro. It looks so delicious… It looks soft… Have you eaten it yet? You can see the fat when you cut it through. Let’s eat Bungo beef. The beef flavor is exploding. It’s so delicious. There’s just the right amount of fat. The meat flavor is amazing! It’s exploding in your mouth. This is grilled golden-eyed snapper with salt koji. It’s definitely delicious. It’s golden-eyed snapper, so it falls apart. Yes… it’s delicious. It’s different from sea bream again. I don’t usually eat golden-eyed snapper. I’d only eat it if I came to a place like this. They had fish dishes and meat, and both were delicious. It looked good. I eat the crab rice while it’s still hot. Oh, it’s done really well. This is prawn tempura. There’s also okra and maitake mushrooms. Red miso soup has arrived. Pickles. It goes well with the rice. Here’s the dessert. Melon, watermelon, strawberry and orange. Thank you for the meal. It was delicious. It’s completely dark, but I’d like to go outside and see the cityscape. At night, the retro feel increases. It’s really retro. I’m back. It feels like my own home. I got sweaty from walking, so I’m going to take a bath. This is what it looks like outside. It’s a pretty good view. The lights aren’t on at this ruin, so it’s lonely. The ruins are a bit conspicuous, but I think this hot spring resort could do with being more lively. Good morning. I’d like to take a morning bath. Now I’m off to eat breakfast. Breakfast is like this, is it miso soup? It’s like a salad. There’s also salmon, eggs, and other things. There’s also salad. It looks like the rice is already cooked. Mentaiko? Let’s eat. There are ruins over here too. Ruins there, this one, and this one too. Everything from here onwards is ruins. I had breakfast. It was delicious. The amount of breakfast was just right. This time I stayed at Hizenya’s “Daisen”, and it was a really nice inn. I think the price is a little high, but this time I had a special room, so there was an open-air bath, a hidden room, two sinks, and a really spacious room, and it was a relaxing space. I don’t know what the other rooms are like, but this is a recommended hot spring inn. Now, let’s check out. This time, I visited Tsuetate Onsen, located on the border between Kumamoto and Oita prefectures. What did you think? Although it has declined and its scenery has been damaged, it is a hot spring town with its own charm. Why not visit it yourself? Until then, see you in the next video! Thank you for watching until the end.
