Touring contemporary art around the worldWe are traveling around contemporary art around the worldThis time, we are going to the Setouchi Triennale at the Spring or Station.Good morningIt is the 4th day of the Setouchi TriennaleToday is the last day of the Setouchi Triennale or Station Art FestivalToday, on the final day, I would like to go to Ogishima and KijimaI have arrived at the centerToday, I will purchase tickets at the ticket center on the right side of the portHere you can also purchase tickets for the express line to Toshima and NaoshimaThe ticket was 510 yen one way.Today is a weekday , so I was able to buy it right away without having to line up.The ferry from Takamatsu Port leaves every 2 hours, starting at 8:00.The challenge begins 15 minutes before departure time.I board the Meon.It looks small at first glance, but you can also bring your car or bicycle. The capacity is 280 people. It seems to be a famous ferry. We departed safely at exactly 8 o’clock. Just behind us, a ferry bound for the island was following us. It was the same ferry, but the large ferry was fast. We were off to sea in no time . Today’s weather is cloudy with occasional sunny spells, and the current temperature is about 15°. We arrived at Ogishima Island about 40 minutes from Takamatsu Port. By the way, about 70% of the people got off at the right island . This is a map of Ogishima Island. It is a small island with an area of 1.34 square kilometers and a population of about 160 people. It is also known as the fisherman’s island, and octopus dishes seem to be the most popular dish. When you land on the island, the first thing that catches your eye is the ferry waiting area. Of course, it is one of the artworks. There was also a Setoge information booth at the ferry waiting area, so you can get a pamphlet there. The Setoge artworks on Ogishima Island are 9 The start time is 30:00, so I’ll look at the works that can be accessed at any time first. I’m heading to the work while enjoying the scenery with the stone walls of Ogi Island. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the port where you can get food. The work comes into view. Do you know where it is? You can see it when you get close. This work matches the scenery with the islands on the opposite shore. This work, standing on the seashore, is a walking ark that was made by Noah’s Ark. Noah’s Ark is a story that appears in the Genesis period of the Old Testament. Humans were full of violence and evil on earth, and God decided to cause a rift and wipe out the situation. Among them, God ordered Noah, who was the only one living righteously, to build a huge ship and put his family and all the male and female animals on it. After that, a great flood occurred and everything on the earth sank, but Noah and his people on the ship were saved. When the water receded, the ship landed on the top of the mountain, and Noah and his people started a new world from there. God vowed to never destroy humanity again, and as a sign of this, he put a rainbow in the sky. The story of escaping from the scourge and carrying hope for the future is felt, and it gives a quiet impression on the viewer. There is a work on the way back to the port. It’s still 9:00. It’s just before 30pm but they say we’re ready and it’s OK to go in, so we head off to see the artwork inside. This season’s new work is by Emily 5. It’s Our Island. This piece is themed around Ogijima and uses a lot of colorful fabrics, including the island’s traditional kimono and recycled clothing. In fact, all of the fabric was collected from the residents of the island. The artist, who was attracted to the island’s population of 160 , created this piece as a project involving all of the residents. This piece, shaped like Ogijima, is an impressive piece whether viewed up close or from afar. There is a sound field, which is essential in daily life on Ogijima. Next, we head to an art piece that makes use of the Komi house nearby. This is a work by Goro Murayama, a drawing created by the 90-year-old resident of the area. The entire Komi House is used as a canvas, and there are artworks on the first and second floors. The rules of self-automation, which are used in computer science information theory, are hand-created. This wall art piece is a work of art that turns the process of autonomously generating patterns into an artwork. From here, the roads become typical of Kogi Island. They are narrow and split up like a maze. As I was walking along looking at the stylish murals, I found a shop called Kuwato Books. I wonder if it’s a bookstore? Underneath, they were selling rice balls. They had three types: miso, sake salt paste, and mentaiko. I was just feeling a bit hungry, so this was a relief. I had a hard time deciding, but I chose the sake salt paste, which cost 250 yen. By the way, this mural is also one of the artworks. It is made of wooden boards made of wires and cables collected from the island, and the island’s Silhouettes of landscapes and plants are painted in vivid primary colors and attached to the sea wall of the table. We go further in. There are Seto Game guide signs everywhere so you don’t get lost, so don’t worry. When we climbed up to the middle of Ogi Island, the sea came into view. You can also see the Meon in the background. The next piece seems to be on display at Comica. Let’s go inside. It’s a work by Matsui Erina. It’s a dream of my future self. Matsui Erina is a contemporary artist who develops her own unique worldview centered around Sen. She combines fictional creatures and the essence of classical art from girls’ manga with images of the land to create a kind of parallel world. This time, on the theme of future small islanders, she overlaid self-portraits drawn by elementary and junior high school students on the island to create a never-before-seen work. Creating the faces of the future Acting school The next work is located just past the Dream Cafe. Burgers and drinks are sold at this cafe. The work is set inside the Komi house. This is Dreamland, a work by Takeshi Kawashima and Dream Friends. This work was first exhibited at the Setouchi Triennale in 2022, but was renewed this year. The artist, Kawashima, is 96 years old this year. The artist’s masterpiece, which is themed on liberation from the curse that Japan has endured since the war, is made into a three-dimensional work in this Komi house. It is colorful no matter where you look in 360 degrees, and you can experience the feeling of being inside a painting. I’m heading to see the next work. Ogishima has many slopes and narrow roads, so please come in comfortable shoes. I recommend listening to the music. It was nice and warm. I was walking around with my cat and before I knew it, I was following him. If you listen carefully, you will hear a sound. There is a work behind these curtains. Maybe some of you have seen this sound before. This work was created by Nori Matsumoto, who also appeared at the Kitatarps International Art Festival. On the first floor of the Komi house, shadows illuminated by soft light move slowly. Then, if you go up to the second floor, you can see the true nature of that sound. Using motors and the power of gravity and wind, musical instruments made of bamboo play light sounds in complex coordination. I hope that everyone watching this autumn’s Rium will spend a quiet and relaxing time, relaxing not only their ears but also their eyes and hearts. It’s a work that makes you forget the passage of time when you’re surrounded by this gentle sound, and you end up feeling too relaxed. I hope everyone will take their time and enjoy the feeling of being slowly enveloped in the sound. The next work is set in this Komika, which is a little way up from Akinorium. This Komika area is also over 100 years old. Let’s go inside now. This work is a room inside Oscar Oiwa’s room. When you enter the room, you will find a Japanese-style room on the roof that has been rotated 90 degrees. This soul-like room has a stronger sense of otherness due to the people reflected in it. Also, at the back, there is a painting of the Seto Inland Sea theme, the Meongo crossing the sea and a large octopus. This is the mural project by Bushi that I also saw near the rice ball shop this morning. We found three in this maze-like residential area. We arrived at the next piece. It is a work by Pansiger and Oiwa Scar, located just below Toyotamahime Shrine. The building is made using Pansiger’s signature building material, Shikan. The building is built on high ground, so it takes in the magnificent scenery of the Setouchi Association as it is in the background. There are also sturdy chairs made of paper installed inside, which you can actually sit on. The three large glass windows inside the building feature drawings by Oiwa Oscar. The sea creatures drawn on the glass, such as octopuses and fish boats, overlap with the actual seascape, creating a pictorial world that goes beyond the window frame. The windows open from time to time, and the pictures overlap to form a single piece. I was surprised that the artworks could become so large. I’d like to see them someday. I’ve seen all the artworks in residential areas. Now I’m heading back to the port to see the artworks near the port. I thought I wasn’t at the cafe today, so I went to Damonte. It’s a cafe and bakery that’s open from 8:30 to 17:00. I have some time before the ferry to the right island, so I’ll relax for a bit. The menu is like this. In addition to coffee and soft drinks, they also sell craft beer. They also have sandwiches, baked goods, and locally made cheesecakes. Takeout is also available. There is no eat-in area, so you can eat on the terrace next to the shop. It’s covered, so you won’t get wet even if it rains. Of course, I had coffee this time too. It was 500 yen, and you can put it in with a hand trip. And the cheesecake I ate when I got here was really delicious and soft inside. It was a feast! There were still about 20 minutes until the challenge time, so I went to see the artworks around the port. First up was the Octopus Ball worn by Team Men. This piece is a playground for the children who live here on Ogi Island. It’s very close to the port, so even children can spend time here without having to wait for the ferry. This piece, which is based on the octopus used in traditional octopus, is a manly piece made by the adults on the island, hoping for the children’s growth. It’s absolutely cute. Next is this piece that appeared at the beginning of the video. It’s the soul of the small island of Jaume Plensa. This piece, which you see first after getting off the ferry, is the first It is a place of remembrance for residents and visitors, and is installed in Ogishima. On the shell-like roof, various cultural rights characters such as Japanese, Rabia, Hebrew, and passwords are used. You can enjoy the changes in the lock and reflection of these characters depending on the time of day. It’s about time to board the ferry to Ujima, so I head to the ferry terminal. This round, chubby shape is very cute, isn’t it? I got on the ferry. Because it was this time, the seats inside and outside were empty. The weather was good, so I sat outside. I was able to see all 14 works. This is my fourth time at the Setouchi Triennale in Ogishima. Because of that, I was able to get through it in less than 3 hours. The people and cats are kind, and it’s a small island that makes you think it’s worth visiting no matter how many times you come. If I have time in the summer, I’d like to buy an oyster-only passport and go around again. [Music] Thank you for watching. The next Setouchi Triennale will be a contemporary art quietly hiding on the island where demons live. We will go to Ujima.
