Lamp Inn Deep in the mountains A trip around Minamitsugaru, including hot springs like this and thatHello, this is “How to Walk Japan”. Okuoku Hachikuro Onsen was really good… This time, we’re heading north from there in Minamitsugaru. It’s a little over an hour’s drive from Hachikuro Onsen to Aoni Onsen, so let’s enjoy the hot springs we had the other day. There’s something here, how do I read it ? It’s here! Should I stop by? What should I do? A hot spring inn located away from the town of Owani, convenient to Hirosaki city and perfect for sightseeing and business. The hot spring is an alkaline simple hot spring (PH8.9) dug by the inspiration of the previous head of the family . It looks like a very comfortable inn. However, today I took a long bath at Okuoku Hachikuro Onsen, so I can’t take a bath now and I’ll pass… I found this sign in a certain village . According to the Kojien dictionary, “Sanaburi” is “a celebration to finish rice planting”. The Japanese dictionary also says, “An event to send off the rice god at the end of rice planting”. It’s on the neighborhood bulletin board . In Akita Prefecture, where there are many farmers, there is a long-standing custom of holding a “Sanaburi” ceremony in June, when rice planting work is over, to thank the farmers for their efforts and pray for a good harvest. It’s also in Aomori. Oh, we’re open for business, vegetable sales! Where is it ? lol The old lady is over there… in the garage. I thought it wasn’t there, and she was washing it with water . It should get a little steep from here. There’s a “hot spring” sign on a mysterious building … is it okay to go in? Maybe… I’ll go as close as I can. There’s an old lady over there. Let’s ask her . Is it okay to take a bath? If you put in 100 yen (yes), it’s amazing… I didn’t think there was a hot spring in a place like this… Where are you from? I’m from Iwate Prefecture. There’s Aoni Onsen up ahead, right? I thought I’d go there… It’s hot during the times when not many people are in… If you don’t dilute it with water before you go in, you’ll have a heart attack, so it’s so hot lol It ‘s hot… I’m glad I asked in advance. I almost had a heart attack lol. The monkey painting on the exterior was apparently created by a student from the former Kuroishi Commercial High School. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was only available to locals. Spring quality: Simple hot spring (hypotonic pure alkaline hot spring). The hot spring water pouring from the rock spout is close to 50°C. It’s really hot! This area gets a lot of snow, so this temperature might be just right to combat the winter cold. They said the contribution was 100 yen , but since I was visiting from outside, I put in a little more. They said that anyone can enter if they pay 100 yen. What ? 100 yen is fine? It says “donate,” but how much… Thank you very much! Also, please note that the road signboards are unique. Warning for Asian black bear sightings As we approach Aoni the road becomes rough and signs in Aomori dialect appear here and there. Wow, there it is! Translation: I was surprised! As more and more of them appeared one after another, it gradually became more fun. Grind the steering wheel Translation: Squeeze the steering wheel (I think?) My, my empty cans Garbage Translation: Empty cans No, no ! From here on, it’s full off-road. It’s gravel, but use the brakes Translation: Brakes don’t work on gravel roads It’s certainly unpleasant There’s a groove on the left side Uuuu, here we come! I came here when I saw a sign that said “Be careful, turn left” There’s no guardrail in the place I needed it most It’s not needed because it’s a turning point (for cars) But, somehow, it ‘s what I needed most The incredible sound of water… And what a slope it is, this slope is named “Nomekurizaka” (No turn left) It’s quite steep, but only about 200m in length It’s an incredible slope! It’s a steep slope, isn’t it? If you go this way, it’s “Mikaeri-zaka”. It’s open even in the middle of winter, so when there’s a lot of snow, normal vehicles probably can’t get through. In winter, a car will come to pick you up at the nearest “roadside station”. There was a photo like this on the website, so it must be useful, just like the Antarctic Expedition Team. Aoni Onsen was first opened in 1929 when the poet Niwa Yogaku built a bathhouse and guest rooms, and before it was opened, it was a place that had never been explored by humans, so it’s amazing. The water that springs from deep in the mountains is colorless and odorless, has no peculiar taste, and is refreshing and clean. The spring quality is simple hot spring (simple hot spring). The hot spring is effective for skin diseases, neuralgia, rheumatism, arteriosclerosis, gastrointestinal diseases, etc. A sign that says “Yogukitaneshi (Welcome)” welcomes you. I wonder if they’re doing any construction work ! There are a lot of things going on! I had imagined it to be a smaller inn based on the website. There were four large baths here, including the “Kenroku-no-yu” bath made entirely of cypress. Newly opened in September 2014, the “Main Building Indoor Bath”, the “Open-air Bath” along the mountain stream, and the “Taki-no-yu” bath. I had heard in advance that the open-air bath was closed at this time. When I was taking a photo at the entrance, they lit up the lamp (so kind). Thank you, thank you . I’ll go inside. Is the open-air bath out of service? No, it was crushed by the snow. Oh, is that so? The snow is amazing this year. Well , if they do the work, it can be reopened. You can use it after it’s fixed. It’s a fine inn . I had assumed that this inn was a small inn, a single inn deep in the mountains. As expected , Aomori has apple posters on the wall. The lamps are lit even during the day, creating a nice atmosphere. On days when all 31 rooms are occupied, it takes two hours to light and distribute 140 lamps. First, I’ll have the indoor bath. There was a lamp hanging in front of the changing room. The indoor bath made entirely of cypress must be wonderful at night . The scent of cypress will soothe your body and mind. The warmth will relax you and you can enjoy the scent of Japanese cypress. Next is “Kenroku-no-yu”, a Japanese cypress hot spring located along the river. The high ceilings give a sense of openness, and when you soak in the bath, the view outside looks like a painting. It’s the best place to enjoy the scenery of the four seasons. I couldn’t use the open -air bath, but even just the two baths were enough to make me realize that this is a wonderful inn. I’d like to come back once the open-air bath is repaired. If possible, I’d like to enjoy the hot spring at night with the lamps lit. It would be nice to have a bath with a view of the snow by the light of the lamps in winter. The meals are mainly mountain delicacies such as seasonal wild vegetables and river fish. It’s a nice inn deep in the mountains… Finally, I’ll visit Owani Onsen. There seem to be several public baths, so I was interested. Owani Onsen, which opened in the 1190s, has a history of over 800 years and has long been loved as the inner sanctum of Tsugaru. There are many hot spring inns lined up beside the clear stream of Hirakawa River, and they are characterized by the variety of styles of inns, from small public baths to modern hotels . At the facility called “Wani Come”, there are various facilities such as a drop-in hot spring, souvenir shops, restaurants, and a multipurpose hall. First, let’s gather information there. Adults: 550 yen/person Children: 270 yen/person Open from 9:00 to 22:00 “Day Trip Hot Spring Wani no Yu” where you can easily enjoy “Owani Onsen” The spring quality is a weak alkaline simple spring, and there is also a family bath and sauna. Look! A pink crocodile! What’s pink? A crocodile! Owani Town’s mascot “Arijan” will welcome you in front of the station. Next to it is the Owani Station Hospitality Footbath. Behind it is the station building of the Konan Railway Owani Station. It is a retro unmanned station. Konan Railway, nicknamed “Apple Orchard Railway”. It opened in 1952 and connects Kuroishi, Hirosaki and Owani. Almost the entire section runs parallel to JR East’s Ou Main Line, and due to the declining population, it is scheduled to be closed in 2027, so local lines in rural areas are in a tough situation. Address: 53-2 Kuradate Muraoka, Owani-machi, Minamitsugaru-gun, Aomori Prefecture Business hours: 6:00-21:00 Closed: 2nd Wednesday of every month Bathing fee: 200 Spring quality: Sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring I went to the bath alone… my wife waited in the car… she was eating. Owani Onsen public bath reborn in the Reiwa era It was built in its current location in 1934 and has been renovated several times. It has a reputation as the representative public bath of Owani Onsen. It was certainly quite crowded. It had just been renovated and the inside was very clean. I would have liked to have gone in and seen it before it was renovated. Akayu is a place to stay (not a public bath), after all. It’s small, but I’m curious about Jun-Kissa Cologne , it’s not open yet! This area is really interesting. There’s a public bath about a 7-minute walk from Owani Onsen Station. It has a lovely retro exterior , but I wonder if it’s open. Owani used to have 9 public baths, but the number is decreasing as the number of tourists has decreased. From 6 to 9… it seems it’s open. This is one of the surviving public baths. I bought a ticket from the ticket machine, but there was no one at the counter. The old lady chatting in the lobby was the receptionist, I thought she was a customer lol. The spring quality is a sodium calcium chloride sulfate spring with a pH of 7. The indoor bath was a little hot at about 43 degrees, and the hot water was so refreshing that it stimulated my body and made me jump up. Thank you. It was hot and felt good. Oh, really? Was it okay? Yes, it was perfect… I’m glad lol I was a little surprised at first lol But the second time, your body gets used to it… I was a little surprised when I put my foot in lol If I had a bath like this near my house, I’d probably go every day The price is also very cheap at 300 yen Owani Onsen has a 30cm long soy bean sprout called “Owani Onsen Moyashi” that has been passed down since the Edo period In the Edo period, it was considered a gift to the Hirosaki domain and was eaten by putting it in nanakusa-gayu There are many delicious looking vegetables lined up, but no bean sprouts to be found In reality, these bean sprouts should be lined up in the store… but it seems that we just hit a few days when they are not being produced, so they said they will be in stock from the day after tomorrow You have skis I thought they were skis I thought they were toothbrushes Is this some kind of advertisement? That… I remember it, the neighborhood association (like this map…) This town is a mysterious place where everything is a little nostalgic I head to the next public bath. There are still some left This one ! This one! ! It used to be called “Kawaharako no Yu” because it was located by the river, and is still affectionately known as “Karako” in the town. It is a 3-story impressive building next to the Aoyagi Bridge over the Hirakawa River and the Marushichi Tsugaru Miso Soy Sauce Co., Ltd. At first glance, it has a distinctive appearance that makes you think it is a small factory. I know that the first floor is a bath, but what is the second and third floors? Local people are having fun talking here too. I guess it is also a place for people to socialize. It reminds me of the public bath I went to as a child . The inside is surprisingly spacious and clean (sorry), and the retro weighing scale is nice. Source name: Owani Integrated Source (Aoyagi No. 3, Ueda No. 3, Akada No. 2, Ishihara) Spring quality: Sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring Temperature: 68.8℃ pH value: 7.0 I was curious about the wall of the soy sauce factory next door, so I went to see it. Marushichi was started by seven people in Owani Town, Aomori Prefecture in 1910 (Meiji 43) . It is a long-established store that has been supported by locals for a long time. They make miso using hot spring water and sell a wide range of products such as miso, soy sauce, sauce, and koji. I wonder if you can visit the factory? I didn’t visit this time, but there is a great hot spring inn here . It is the oldest inn still standing in Owani Onsen. Yamani Senyukan It was founded in 1872, the year after the freedom to choose one’s occupation was granted in 1871. In 1881, it became the inn for Emperor Meiji’s closest aide. Since then, great historical figures have used it. The current building was built in 1897 and is registered as a tangible cultural property, so you can experience the atmosphere in which great people spent their time. The bath has a retro design that gives you a sense of Taisho romance! It’s wonderful, isn’t it? It’s called “Romantic Fountain” We had dinner at the directly managed cultural property storehouse cafe and experienced the local food culture. For breakfast, they serve local breakfast dishes called “Tsugaru Kaccha Breakfast”. However, unfortunately, there is no day-trip bathing. I would like to come back and stay someday. My trip to Minami Tsugaru started with a natural hot spring called Okuoku Hachikuro Onsen. There seem to be many more great hot springs. If you have any useful information, please let me know in the comments section. Best regards, How to Walk Japan
