続日本100名城 富山城 水堀と石垣を巡らせた美麗な城 富山県 Toyama Castle 2025

Today I’m heading to Toyama Castle on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. I arrived at Toyama Station. From the station, I’ll take the light rail. It takes about 5 minutes to get to Toyama Castle. I’ll get off at Marunouchi Station. I can see a replica castle tower ahead. It was built in 1954 as a symbol of post-war reconstruction. There was a monument that read “AMAZING TOYAMA.” It is said that Toyama Castle was built around 1543 by Jinbo Nagamoto, who was the deputy governor. Later, it became the castle of Sassa Narimasa, a retainer of Oda Nobunaga. In the Edo period, Toyama Castle was the castle of a branch of the Kaga Maeda clan. Toyama Castle was once surrounded by a double moat and a river. The north side in particular was a strong castle that used the Jinzu River. The main gate is square-shaped. There are several huge mirror stones on the stone wall. There was an iron gate around here. It seems that a tower could not be built on the tower base around here because the shogunate did not give permission. The castle grounds are maintained as a park. There is a Japanese garden, so I went in. It seems that it was created in 2015 based on the garden that once existed in the main citadel of Toyama Castle. There is a statue of Maeda Masafusa, the second lord of the Toyama domain. He is said to be the lord who popularized medicine selling in Toyama. A teahouse built in the Meiji period was relocated here. I walked through the garden again. There is a waterfall. I went to the back gate. This was also made of stone walls. I could see Chitose Gomon Gate ahead. Chitose Gomon Gate is the only surviving building in the castle. It was built in 1849. It is made entirely of cypress, and the roof is made of red brick. There is a display of stone materials from Toyama Castle in the Edo period, so I went there. I headed to the replica castle tower. There was a monument with a poem by Sassa Narimasa. I entered the castle tower. The castle tower was a museum, so photography was prohibited. I could see the square-shaped tiger’s mouth. I went down the castle tower and left through the Tetsu Gomon Gate. I walked north along the castle ruins avenue along the stone wall. After walking a little further, I came across Toyama City Hall, so I decided to go there. There is an observation tower in the city hall, and I’m glad that I can see the view for free. I can see Toyama Castle, where I was just now, and Toyama Bay. On a clear day, I can see Mt. Tateyama, but that wasn’t possible on this day. What a shame. I ate some udon noodles with firefly squid at the station before heading home. Thank you for watching.
