【長崎旅行】有明海に突き出す半島「雲仙・島原」を観光したらすごかった。
good morning I am currently at Miike Port in Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture. This is the southernmost point of Fukuoka Prefecture. 1 hour by train from Fukuoka city It takes about 10 minutes by bus from Omuta Station. In fact, Miike Port is registered as a World Heritage Site. It is one of the components of the World Heritage Site “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution”. It was a port that produced coal, which supported the modernization of Japan. If you go south on this road for about 2km, you will reach Arao City in Kumamoto Prefecture. Therefore, it is located on the border between Fukuoka and Kumamoto prefectures. This time I’m going to Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture. Now, the Ariake Sea spreads out before my eyes. We will cross this sea by ferry and depart for a two-day, one-night trip to the Shimabara Peninsula. Then, let’s head straight to the ferry terminal. The Miike Shimabara Line connects Omuta in Fukuoka with Shimabara in Nagasaki The journey takes approximately 50 minutes. We’ll board this ferry and head to the Shimabara Peninsula. The distance is shorter than by land, making travel smoother. You can enjoy the scenery of the Ariake Sea and feel like you’re on a short cruise. The Ariake Sea is surrounded by land, so the waves are calm. There is little rocking, so even those who are worried about seasickness can feel at ease. We have arrived at Shimabara Peninsula Look at the mountains behind It’s very impressive! The Shimabara Port ferry terminal is quite spacious and clean. It has two floors. The first floor is a large shop where you can buy lots of souvenirs. I’m going to rent a car now and enjoy the Shimabara Peninsula right away. Rental car for 2 days and 1 night in front of Shimabara Port The car I rented is brand new. Very lucky This place was built on the west side of Shimabara Castle during the Edo period as a residential area for low-ranking samurai. Even now, the old townscape remains intact. Along the street, there are three samurai houses that are open to the public free of charge. You can experience what life was like back then. This samurai residence street was a residential area where low-ranking samurai lived. This is a map of the residential area of the samurai residences at that time. There were a huge number of houses packed together. The main keep of Shimabara Castle is located here. High-ranking people lived around here. Low-ranking samurai lived here. There is also a rest area like this at the entrance to the samurai residence. There is a waterway running through the middle like this. It seems that it was used as water for daily life in the past. Even so, it’s a very pleasant street. Found a cat cute… If you go along the samurai residence street, you will arrive at Shimabara Castle. The pure white five-story castle tower is beautiful. The current castle is a reconstruction, but it has a history of 400 years. Shimabara Castle is also the site of the famous Shimabara Amakusa Rebellion in Japanese history. We arrived at the observation deck of Shimabara Castle’s castle tower. What a wonderful view! And these are the mountains of Mount Unzen. It’s very impressive! I went to Shimabara Castle I thought the admission fee of 700 yen was a bit expensive. In fact, the castle is now a museum. Here you can learn more about Shimabara’s history and Christian culture. I thought it was a good place to start sightseeing on the Shimabara Peninsula. New and beautiful office building This was in front of the city hall building. Drinking springs at Shimabara Onsen “Drinkable hot spring” There is almost no hot spring water, so you can’t drink it. I wanted to drink You can see Shimabara Castle from the city hall. Right in front of the city hall is an arcade called Sunshine Chuo-gai. Now let me introduce the Shimabara Peninsula, where we will be traveling. The Shimabara Peninsula is located in the eastern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. It is a peninsula that juts out into the Ariake Sea. It consists of three cities: Shimabara, Minamishimabara, and Unzen. The combined population of the three cities is approximately 120,000. In the center of the island, a volcano stands out, centered on Mount Unzen. It is known as a city rich in nature, with volcanoes, hot springs, and water. Next we went to the roadside station Himawari. Adjacent to it is the Mudslide Damaged Houses Preservation Park. I didn’t realize there was a roadside station nearby. First, head to the Mudslide Damaged Houses Preservation Park This place was destroyed by the great eruption of Mount Unzen in the 1990s. This is a place where houses that were actually buried under a mudslide are preserved in their original form. The park has three tent houses and eight outdoor houses on display. The first floor of the house is completely buried under the soil. It shows the extent of the damage Fortunately, the residents of this house had received an evacuation warning and had evacuated in advance, so no one was hurt. You can really feel the reality of natural disasters. We need a place to pass on these disasters to future generations. At the nearby “Gamadas Dome” It is now a museum where you can learn about volcanic eruptions and disasters. And right before our eyes is Mount Unzen Fugen. While it is beautiful, I also feel a sense of awe towards nature. And this is the roadside station Himawari There is also a restaurant You can eat at this roadside station. I want to eat lunch somewhere, so I’m heading there. 10 minutes along the mountain path towards Mount Unzen The atmosphere is really nice A restaurant where you can enjoy seasonal cuisine in a quiet space surrounded by nature. First, chicken rice balls soaked in chicken stock It’s packed with ingredients and is delicious!! This is the shop’s recommended fried chicken Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside It’s very filling and I’m satisfied with just this. And this is what I was looking forward to the most Spring and summer only somen nagashi using spring water from Mount Unzen This is what’s fun Let the noodles flow Highest It is also elegant to put the noodle soup into a bamboo tube and eat it. The journey to the restaurant, the atmosphere and the food were all excellent. It feels like summer has begun Yama-no-dera Oi was really delicious I was surprised. Ambience and food are both perfect I’d like to come back here again when I visit Shimabara. There was a nice cafe just below the shop. I’ll have iced coffee after the meal. That’s awesome The location is excellent The beauty of these Unzen mountains I was full, but I saw some cute mini loaves so I bought some I am already satisfied with my trip to Shimabara Peninsula. The ultimate after-meal coffee time After this, I’m going to climb Mt. Unzen and take the Unzen Ropeway. It was a nice break (Toll booth attendant) It’s a one-way street. It’s a one-way street from here I’m thankful that there are no oncoming vehicles on mountain roads. It’s a magnificent view. In front of us is Mt. Heisei Shinzan Very impressive! This is the power of the second observation deck I’m really looking forward to getting closer to it And the pink flowers that adorn the mountains It’s Miyamakirishi This Miyamakirishi flower grows only in the highlands of Kyushu. It was the perfect season to see the pink flowers against the mountain. And then we arrived at the ropeway station. You can see Mt. Heisei Shinzan over there. Take the ropeway to the top Unzen Ropeway celebrates its 60th anniversary This is the ropeway station This ropeway doesn’t run on a fixed schedule, but every 12 minutes. No one else is on board except me From here it’s about 500m uphill to Myokendake Station. The journey takes about 3 minutes. Our ropeway was completed in 1957, over a period of just over 10 months. This is the first ropeway in a national park in Japan. The highest peak of the Unzen Five Mountains This is Mount Fugen, which is 1,360 meters above sea level. You will be able to see the beautiful scenery of the Amakusa Islands. You will arrive at Myokendake Station. It’s so impressive! Have the view all to yourself This is amazing Is that the summit? Wow, that’s amazing. The summit of Mt. Myoken The green mountain in front of us is Mount Fugen. Behind that is Heisei Shinzan. The Miyamakirishi flowers are blooming beautifully on that mountain. It’s a thrill to ride (it’s an old ropeway) I was really lucky today because the weather was so good It’s soothing to hear the voices of these wild birds from all sides. I really feel nature Next up was the Unzen Jigoku area. The smell of sulfur hits you the moment you step out of the car. This is Onsen Shrine, written as “Onsen” Shrine. Let’s start touring Jigokudani right away. There are hot spring eggs here. I think there are some in Jigokudani too, so let’s move on. This stylish hotel is right in front of you. Hoshino Resorts “Kai Unzen” That’s nice I’d like to stay there once The smell of sulfur suddenly became stronger. Now the way is open amazing Wow, so beautiful! Wow! What a surprise! I didn’t even notice that there was a cat right below me. A scene that symbolizes world peace I want to touch her, but she looks so comfortable sleeping that I’ll let her go. I arrived at Unzen Jigoku I’ve walked this road and now I’m here It’s spacious, easy to navigate and easy to see I found a cat under this bench too. The onsen eggs I thought I could get here were already sold out. disappointing There’s a cross over there It’s not just warm, it’s hot. What I thought when I came to Shimabara Japanese bush warbler, etc. The sound of wild birds can be heard well and it is very pleasant. This is exactly what I mean. I understand why the Shimabara Peninsula is a geopark. I went around the whole area and enjoyed the tour of hell. It was a nice walk. It was just a time when no one was around. We had hell to ourselves. People staying at nearby hotels can enjoy a beautiful night view. There are still Has your posture changed a bit? It’s a tour of hell, but for cats it’s heaven. It’s already past 6 o’clock, so the shops are probably closed. I enjoyed the Unzen Jigoku area. I ate too much at lunch so I’m not very hungry After this, I’ll go to dinner, stay at the inn, and prepare for tomorrow. As you can see from the menu, all the dishes are very reasonably priced. There is a wide variety It’s seriously delicious! It seems to be run by a family and the atmosphere is relaxed. It was comfortable Wow, it was seriously delicious. Thank you for the meal I had dinner at Chidori I was surprised. It was the most delicious udon I’ve ever had. The bean paste has a slight sweetness to it. The noodles are chewy and springy. The volume was also plentiful. Nevertheless, it is cheap at 700 yen. It’s a nice shop. Now that I’ve had dinner, I’m heading to the inn to prepare for tomorrow. The sea is right in front of you It’s dark at night now so I’ll take a picture of the exterior tomorrow morning. The entrance lobby on the first floor looks like this. This is the room I’ll be staying in today: That’s enough. For someone like me who just wants to sleep If this costs 4700 yen, it’s actually cheap. As the name suggests, this Shioyu Ryokan uses boiled seawater. I’m grateful that the inn even has a large public bath. Day 1: We toured the eastern part of the Shimabara Peninsula. Tomorrow I will go from the south to the west of the Shimabara Peninsula. I plan to go around the Shimabara Peninsula. I’m sleepy now so I’ll go to bed soon See you Tomorrow good morning Shimabara Peninsula Day 2 start This is Shioyu Ryokan where I stayed yesterday. And right in front of you is the Ariake Sea. I took the opportunity to take a morning walk along the beach. I was looking into it last night I discovered a shop run by YouTuber “Muracho Rui” near Shioyu Ryokan. “But I still want to eat curry.” It’s not open today, but instead A cat greeted me Are you there because you want curry? The menu is butter chicken curry. I wanted to try it I’m in Minamishimabara city right now. Go further south, go to the west, I plan to go full circle and come back. The weather is cloudy Let’s go! We arrived at the parking lot of the Hara Castle ruins. Here and Now This whole area surrounded by a red frame is a World Heritage Site, and we are about to enter it. This is the entrance to the Hara Castle ruins. The place seems to be quite spacious. Walking towards the main enclosure of Hara Castle ruins Let’s take a moment to look back at the history of Hara Castle. The time is the early Edo period. Hara Castle was built in 1604. It was built by the Christian feudal lord Arima After that, the Arima clan moved to another place. When the Matsukura clan became the new lords Shimabara Castle was built Hara Castle was abandoned in 1618. From then on, life for the people of the territory became increasingly difficult. Heavy taxes and famine due to poor harvests Those who could not pay were subjected to ruthless torture. For the ever-increasing number of Christians Forbidden faith They carry out severe repression and forced conversion. Meanwhile, in 1637 Finally the people rose up This is the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion. The commander in chief is a boy in his mid-teens, Amakusa Shiro. He led a crowd of about 37,000 people. They barricaded themselves in Hara Castle and confronted the Shogunate forces. However, they were surrounded by 120,000 Shogunate troops gathered from all over the country. After a three-month siege, Hara Castle fell. Almost the entire population lost their lives here. After that, the shogunate made sure that this place would never be used again. Completely destroying stone walls and other structures They tried to wipe out the castle entirely. In recent excavations Crosses and rosaries found in collapsed stone walls And countless human bones have been found. Hara Castle ruins was the final resting place of those who risked their lives for what they believed in. It’s so peaceful that it’s hard to believe that a fierce battle took place there. There is no building left now The entire castle ruins have been developed and are registered as a World Heritage Site. We arrived at the remains of the main citadel of Hara Castle. This place was the final stage of the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion. If you actually walk up there, you’ll see that it’s a quiet hill with a great view. This was a turning point in Japanese history. The Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion was a huge shock to the shogunate. This led to even more strict control over Christianity. Led to “national isolation” This time I am traveling around the Shimabara Peninsula. After learning about the history, you can go sightseeing in Amakusa and Nagasaki. I think it will be interesting to see a different view. I want to go. These historical sites I think you’ll enjoy it more if you know the history. Local guides and VR commentary, etc. I think it would be a good idea to use something like that. I went to the ruins of Hara Castle Go further and head into this area I’m going to see the dolphins now. I still have time, so I’ll eat the bread I bought yesterday. I’m signing up for a dolphin watching trip by myself. The minimum number of participants is two, so there is a possibility that the tour will not be held. I was a little worried It seems to be held without any problems (I’m relieved) I wondered if it would be easy to see wild dolphins. It seems like we’ll almost certainly meet Then I’m off to dolphin watching. Approximately 20 minutes by ferry We arrived at Hayasaki Seto, the strait between the Shimabara Peninsula and the Amakusa Islands. Arrived There are lots of dolphins Apparently there are over 200 dolphins living in this area. You can see wild dolphins all year round As expected, we were able to see many dolphins up close. I enjoyed dolphin watching That was good. It was really fun to see the dolphins up close. I was able to see them jumping and playing with seaweed. It was fun. Leave Kuchinotsu and move on to the next place. A field of terraced fields I also saw rice terraces in Hamanoura, Saga. The area over there was a rice paddy, so it was filled with water. These are terraced fields where potatoes and other vegetables are grown. The atmosphere is different and the gradation is beautiful. We will go further I came to the Obama Onsen area of Unzen City. It’s 105 metres long. It is said to be the longest foot bath in Japan. Obama Onsen Tourist Map Not only Unzen Jigoku but also Obama Onsen is a place that you can visit for a day. It’s really long, at 105 meters. The foot bath flows from top to bottom like this. Give me a basket and two eggs Do I just put this in and close it? I was put in the middle. Steaming eggs in a steamer Put it in the pot and wait 15 minutes The steaming time is about 15 minutes. Take a foot bath while steaming Warms the body I got on the bottom shelf, but it was still hot. I guess the upper level is hotter (likely around 43 degrees) I got really sweaty after taking a foot bath. hot I’ll open it in 15 minutes. GET It’s burning hot. It’s so hot that it’s hard to peel I finally peeled off the shell Add salt and enjoy. delicious Location has been moved Apparently, he was struggling because he didn’t know there was a water supply nearby. Of course it’s hot. Eating hot spring eggs at a hot spring is the best. I enjoyed Obama Onsen We head north along the west coast of the Shimabara Peninsula. It is written as “Sen” (a thousand) and “Seki” (a thousand stones) and read as “Chijiwa”. Tachibana Bay spreads out before your eyes. Apparently, you can see the earth moving here. The area we’re in now is surrounded by multiple faults. The earth seems to be sinking If you look at the mountain ridge, you can see that it is sinking due to fault activity. It’s a place created by volcanoes, faults and plateaus. The field you see in the middle is a potato field. That kind of potato There is a food called “jagachan” that is a specialty of Chijiwa. Let’s try it I bought “Jagachan” It’s like deep-fried steaming potatoes with a sweet skin. I feel like I’ve never eaten anything like this before I managed to avoid dropping it on the ground. I listened to the song “Jagachan” too much. I feel like I’m in a dream. Returned to Shimabara Port This time, I enjoyed the Unzen and Shimabara area in Nagasaki Prefecture for two days and one night. The grandeur and terror of Unzen Volcano And I was able to touch upon the history engraved in the Shimabara Peninsula. It was a very fulfilling trip. I was able to go around the Shimabara Peninsula. Driving along the coast was also a lot of fun. I hope this video is helpful Thank you for watching until the end.
