Hello, I’m Kyushu Sora, your guide. This time, I’ll show you the waterfalls along National Route 210, which runs from Oita to Kurume. First, we visited Ryusho Falls, a hidden healing spot near National Route 210 in Shonai Town, Yufu City, a super hidden gem known only to those in the know . The parking lot is new, so you can go to see the waterfall with peace of mind. The information boards and paths are well-maintained and easy to understand. The air changes as you enter the forest. Go down the stairs of a fairly steep slope and go deeper, and you will see a tunnel at the end of a narrow path along the river. Going through the tunnel, two beautiful waterfalls with a drop of 25 meters will appear in front of you. Listen to the sound, feel the pleasant spray of the waterfalls, and be fascinated by the beauty of nature. This is truly another world. Beyond the tunnel is a dead-end circular space, a mysterious otherworld where the male and female waterfalls are lined up, a sacred area that is unreal. Cold, pure air floats. It is a very healing space. Heading west from Ryusho Falls on Route 210, we arrived at Roadside Station Yufuin. Due to the reconstruction of the store, the building with the product and information corner was temporarily closed from June 1st (Sun) to early August. However, the clean toilet building, which is available 24 hours a day, is available as usual. It is very helpful for taking a break during a drive. Heading further west from Yufuin, there is a restaurant called Restaurant Aoyama in Kokonoe Town. It is said to be a famous restaurant locally. I was hungry so I stopped by. They had lunch, so I ordered that. The meat in this hamburger steak was from Oita Prefecture. It was a very delicious lunch. I was full so I headed to the next waterfall. Next, I went north from Route 210 to Ryumon Falls, a large waterfall where the legendary dragon god sleeps. Ryumon Falls is a waterfall located in Matsugi, Kokonoe Town, Kusu District, Oita Prefecture. From the parking lot, head towards Ryumonji Temple. The view of the waterfall from Ryumonji Temple is spectacular. It is said that during the Kamakura period, Rankei Doryu, who came to Japan from the Southern Song Dynasty and spread the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, stopped here and was named after Ryumon Falls in Henan Prefecture, as it resembled the falls. Ryumon Falls is a spectacular two-stage waterfall with a drop of 26m and a width of 40m, created by the erosion of the Chikushi lava plateau. *This waterfall was known as a waterfall where you can slide down the falls in the summer, but part of the cliff on the left side of Ryumon Falls has collapsed, making it a dangerous situation, so “waterfall sliding” is currently suspended. From Ryumon Falls, return to National Route 210 and head towards Jion Falls. Just before the roadside station “Jion no Taki Kusu”, we will introduce “Takeyabu Kusu Main Store”, a fried chicken and chicken sashimi shop! All the chicken here is delicious, and it is always full of customers. After buying chicken sashimi and yakitori and leaving the store, we found this place. It is a space where you can eat leisurely while looking at the magnificent view. I ate the yakitori I bought while looking at the view. After my stomach settled, I headed to “Jion no Taki”. It is about 5 km from Takeyabu. “Jion no Taki”, located west of Kusu Town, is located on the border between Amanase Town, Hita City and Kusu Town, Kusu County. Next to Jion no Taki is the roadside station “Jion no Taki Kusu”, which is a great place to take a break during your drive. The waterfall is a two-tiered waterfall with a total drop of about 30m, with the upper tier being 20m and the lower tier being 10m. The upper section is surrounded by cliffs on both sides and is set back, so it is a spectacular waterfall that can only be seen from the front. There is also a legend about a dragon, and it is said that this region is fertile thanks to the dragon. It is also known as “Ura-mi no Taki” (Back-viewing Waterfall) because you can go to the back of the waterfall, but as of June 2025, due to heavy rains, it was not possible to go behind the waterfall. The last waterfall we went to was “Sakurataki,” which was mentioned in the comments section . Enter the side road on the right side of the Amagase Onsen entrance intersection, and after walking about 100m, you will reach a private parking lot. This beautiful waterfall is located in Amagase, Hita City, Oita Prefecture, and was ranked No. 1 on the TV program “Matsuko no Shiranai Sekai.” It is a beautiful waterfall with excellent access, and is a spectacular view that can be reached in 5 minutes on foot from the parking lot. Parking is free . There is this sign near the entrance and exit of the parking lot. To get to the waterfall, you will pass under the JR Kyudai Line. If you go further from Sakurataki Fureai Hiroba, you will see a river flowing next to it. As you head upstream, you will see Sakurataki. This waterfall is located on the Garaku River, which originates in the Goma Plateau and joins the Kusu River. It has a drop of about 25m and a width of about 15m. It is said that the waterfall was named Sakurataki because the abundant water volume, the water that flows down from it, forms countless very fine streams, and the spray looks like cherry blossoms. What amazing spray! This is a truly beautiful waterfall. It is really rare to be able to see such a magnificent waterfall within a 5-minute walk! I am grateful!
