【ホテル&万博探訪】大阪の絶景ホテル×万博の魅力的なパビリオン建築巡り「ダブルツリーbyヒルトン大阪城」
Hello everyone, I’m Okada from Architect Vacation. This time I’m in Osaka, which is in the midst of the excitement of the World Expo . In addition to the usual hotel exploration, I’d like to visit the 2025 Osaka Kansai Expo, which is currently attracting a lot of attention, and feel the excitement of the place while touring the fascinating architecture. Before that, I ‘d like to stop by Expo Commemoration Park, the site of the 1970 Osaka Expo, to see the Tower of the Sun and the exhibits from that time, and do a little preparation for the Expo. The first place I visited was the DoubleTree by Hilton Osaka Castle, where I’ll be staying tonight. It is located very close to the historic Osaka Castle, and is about a 10-minute drive from Osaka Station. Its appeal is its easy accessibility. It is a notable hotel that is becoming increasingly popular not only for business use but also as a base for sightseeing. Let’s take a look inside. First, as you enter the entrance on the first floor, you will find the elevator hall. The curved walls and benches set up along them give a soft impression and gently welcome guests. The reception is on the sixth floor, so let’s take the elevator up. When you get off the elevator, the reception lobby spreads out before you. The circularly designed space is impressive with beautifully arranged indirect lighting. In the center, there is a bench space that resembles the water surface of the moat around Osaka Castle, and the whole space exudes calm and elegance. On the back of the reception counter, there is a large painting of the Osaka landscape of the past, giving the impression of a story where the past and present intersect. On the other side of the reception, there is a restaurant, bar, and a small shop. Now, let’s head to the rooms. This time, we will be staying in a king room, twin room, premium suite, and a choice of rooms with a castle view or river view. We chose the lounge . This is an executive room with access to a castle view twin bed. Let’s take a look inside the room. The size is compact at about 26 square meters, but the layout is functional and comfortable. From the window, you can see Osaka Castle, which is also the name of the hotel, up close, and you can enjoy the luxurious view that is unique to this hotel. The interior design is based on the theme of water, with blue as the color scheme, based on the image of Osaka, which was once called the water city . It is a calm and refreshing space where you can relax. Next, let’s take a look at the bathroom . The washroom is simple but functional, with a design that gives you a sense of quality. Next is the bathroom, which is a unit type bathroom, but uses tiles in a calm color. On the other side of the bathroom is the toilet, and the layout is efficient and without waste. In terms of design , it is impressive that diamond motifs are used in various places in the building, such as the door decorations, artwork, and floor patterns . The hotel has a unified design. Next, let’s go see the executive lounge on the top floor. This lounge is exclusively for guests staying in executive rooms or suites. It is a spacious space with over 100 seats, and you can enjoy a magnificent view of Osaka Castle from the windows that stretch out all over the place, allowing you to spend an elegant and comfortable time. Depending on the time of day, snacks, sweets, evening cocktails and other services are provided, which is one of the pleasures of your stay. Next, I would like to go to the indoor pool exclusively for guests. The pool is 11m x 5m in size, and the calm interior and lighting create a resort atmosphere. There are also sunbeds lined up by the pool, making it perfect for spending a quiet and relaxing time. There were few guests on this day, so we had the pool almost to ourselves and were able to enjoy it to our heart’s content with our children. For pool lovers, having such a well-equipped facility increases the satisfaction of a hotel stay. There is also a gym space next to the pool, so I will introduce it to you. For dinner tonight, I would like to head to the hotel’s okonomiyaki restaurant. The local taste made me feel even more excited about my trip. Thank you for the meal. I will have breakfast at the restaurant “SEN” on the 6th floor. Next to the dining area is the lounge and bar “SEN”, which was inspired by the culture of travel and relaxation by boat that supported Osaka’s commerce . Let’s take a look at it. The space is decorated in a calm blue color, and the panoramic view of Osaka Castle spreads out from the glass windows, creating a special time as if floating on the water. The restaurant “SEN” is an all-day dining restaurant that conveys the bustle of Osaka, the kitchen of the world, with the theme of welcoming many customers . It is a space where you can enjoy international buffets and a la carte dishes throughout the day. In the innermost space, lighting made of giant lanterns is hung, creating a festive atmosphere like a festival. So, my stay at the “DoubleTree by Hilton Osaka Castle” was comfortable in terms of location, view, and facilities, and it was a perfect hotel for sightseeing in Osaka and as a base for the Expo. Now, let’s finally head to the Osaka Kansai Expo site. When you enter from the East Gate, you can see the symbolic giant roof ring in the back. The official mascot “Myaku Myaku” will also be there to welcome you. The first place we visited was the “Japan Pavilion”, which has been highly praised for its architecture and exhibits. The Japan Pavilion, which has the theme of “The Circulation of Life,” is an impressive structure made of reusable wooden planks that are arranged in a circle like dominoes, with a grand scale and delicate rhythm . The interior is divided into three zones, “Plant,” “Farm,” and “Factory,” and visitors can experience the process of recycling waste into water, materials, and products. Next, we pass under the large roof ring and head to our next destination , the Signature Zone. Our first destination is “The Adventure of Life,” produced by Shoji Kawamori , this pavilion is the building I was most looking forward to at this Expo. This pavilion was designed by architect Shogo Onodera, who has been my best friend since our university days and with whom I shared an office and worked on projects when I first became independent. I had always had an eye on his work, so it was quite moving and made me very happy to see his work standing shoulder to shoulder with the pavilions of other famous architects at the Expo. Fountain shows are held regularly at the Water Plaza, located near the Signature Zone. The dynamic scale of the fountain and the large roof ring is a sight to behold. Next up is “null2,” a pavilion that has attracted particular attention and popularity at the Osaka Expo , produced by Yoichi Ochiai and designed by Keisuke Toyoda of Noiz . The cube-shaped building, covered in soft mirrors, reflects the surrounding light and scenery while allowing wind and robots to move freely . It responds to the movement of the arm and constantly changes organically. It is a unique piece of architecture with a strong presence, where hardness and softness like metal coexist. The exhibit content is also unique, and it is a space where visitors can interact with their own digital avatars and CG images generated by 3D scanning. Under the theme of “Digital Nature,” it is an experiential exhibit that questions the future of the world where digital and nature intersect, and the changes in the way humans exist. In the exhibition space, the images change one after another like a kaleidoscope, blurring the boundaries between real and virtual, creating a fantastical world like a world through a mirror. It was a valuable experience that allowed me to imagine a little bit about the shape of the future, which we do not know how it will change. Next, I would like to climb up to the roof of the large ring roof, which is the symbol of the venue . I am looking forward to seeing the whole view of the Expo venue from above. Aside from the grand scale of the Daikon Ring, what surprised me when I actually visited was the pleasant landscape design with lush plants and flowers on the roof. I felt that just seeing this scenery was enough to make it worth visiting the Expo for those who like architecture and design . Next, I would like to visit as many of the overseas pavilions as possible, which can be entered without prior reservations . The first place I visited was the Saudi Arabia Pavilion, which is very impressive with its unique exterior that is reminiscent of a traditional village and features a unique pattern made from stone materials from Saudi Arabia. Next, I visited the Qatar Pavilion, designed by Kengo Kuma. Then, there was the United Arab Emirates Pavilion, which has a large fountain pendant that stretches from floor to ceiling. The impressive space is lined with columns that stretch out like a row of palm trees . This design was inspired by date palm trees that take root in the earth and reach the sky, and is a reinterpretation of agricultural waste, fused with the woodworking techniques of Japanese craftsmen. is the Kuwait Pavilion, whose exterior looks like a bird spreading its wings wide, and expresses the way it welcomes people and flies into the future. In the exhibition space, you can experience traveling to the Gulf countries, and the children seemed to enjoy themselves. The last place we visited was the Bahrain Pavilion designed by Lina Ghotmeh. The wooden structure is impressive with a flowing exterior, and it is an attempt to combine traditional shipbuilding techniques with Japanese woodworking techniques. The design, which conveys the culture of Bahrain through architecture, was very impressive. Meanwhile, the sun was setting, so that was the end of our tour of the overseas pavilions. The illuminated large roof ring is also fantastic and beautiful. And finally, I would like to watch the night fountain show “Blue and Night Rainbow Parade”. The front of the fountain was reserved seating, so this angle was the limit for viewing from unreserved seats. If you want to enjoy it fully, I recommend a reserved seat in the front or from the top of the large roof ring. So, what did you think of the Osaka Expo? The messages in each pavilion and the space where the culture and design of each country were fused were very stimulating. In particular, there were many designs that were conscious of environmental consideration and a circular society, and I think that there were many hints for thinking about the future of architecture and cities. I hope that everyone will actually go to the site and experience this sense of scale, realism, and the charm of architectural design. In this channel, I will take you on a design journey around hotels, villas, etc. from the perspective of an architect. I myself would like to make use of the wonderful designs while enjoying my vacation to create a better space . If you are interested in travel and architectural design, please subscribe to the channel and give it a high rating! See you in the next video! Thank you!
