Today I am at Fukui Station in Fukui Prefecture. From here, I take a bus to Maruoka Castle. It takes about 50 minutes by bus from the station to Maruoka Castle. It is about a 1-minute walk from the bus stop to Maruoka Castle. Maruoka Castle is designed on the drainage ditch cover. Maruoka Castle was built by Shibata Katsutoyo, the nephew of Shibata Katsuie. It is the only remaining castle tower in the Hokuriku region. In the past, there was a buried gate near the ticket office. There is a stone coffin here called the “Ushigashima Stone Coffin.” It was excavated from a nearby burial mound and was repurposed as stone material for a bridge. There was a Hachiman Shrine inside the castle. I will worship there. I head to the castle tower. The castle tower is a two-tiered, three-story watchtower type with an old architectural style. The stone walls are rough-faced and have many gaps, so they are excellent for drainage. Maruoka Castle is also known as the “Kasumi Castle.” This is a stone monument with a letter that Honda Shigetsugu sent to his wife. This is a memorial monument for O-Shizu, who was sacrificed as a human sacrifice. Maruoka Castle was destroyed in the Fukui earthquake in 1948, but was restored and rebuilt seven years later. We entered the castle tower. This is a model of Maruoka Castle. The inner moat was once pentagonal. There are gaps in the wall for attacks. This is a stone-dropping platform. We went up to the second floor. We could see the whole town of Maruoka. Maruoka Castle uses stone tiles that are resistant to wind and snow. The stone tiles are made of Shakudani stone from Fukui. We went up to the third floor. There is a veranda on the third floor. You can see the Sea of ​​Japan in the distance. We used a rope to go down. 💦 You can see the bay window with lattice. The bay window can also be used as a stone-dropping platform if you remove the floorboards. There is a well. There is a legend that a giant snake appeared from this well and protected the castle from enemies by casting a mist. There is a hipped roof between the castle tower and the stone wall to prevent rainwater from entering. At Maruoka Castle, you can see the old stone wall stacking method. We took a walk around the castle. This was the inner moat at that time. In front of you is the “Ichibu Keijo: Japan’s Shortest Letter Museum.” The admission ticket was valid for both the museum and Maruoka Castle.
