Autumn in Hokkaido Japan
There is something magical
about Autumn in Hokkaido. We set out for a roadtrip to find the
magic colors around the island. The trip started from Sapporo, the largest
city in Hokkaido. And before we headed into the mountains and nature, we spent 2
days exploring around the city. We took some time to explore Nakajima Park, a peaceful
little oasis in the middle of the city. There is a pond in the park, we rented
a boat and rowing around and wandered through the rest of the park. It was a
perfect start to our Hokkaido adventure. On our way to the famous blue bond, we stopped
by this hidden gem called Sandandaki and there’s a beautiful waterfall sits in the forest. The
name Sandandaki means “three tiered waterfall” because the water falls in three levels.
And around us are full of autumn colors, I could smell the cool autumn air all
around. And we continued traveling, hoping to get to the famous blue pond before the sunset. And luckily we made it. The Blue Pond in Biei is one of Hokkaido’s most iconic spots. We spent some time walking around the pond and finding different angles to photograph,
watching the light change as the sun began to set. Everything here felt so peaceful. It’s one of those places where every shot feels like art. The next day we headed up to AsahiDake, the tallest mountain in Hokkaido. It is a place where you can truly see autumn and winter meet with colorful autumn leaves below and snowy peaks above. And we took the ropeway up to the mountain station. The views here were just breathtaking. There are some trails that let us walk deeper into the mountain.
And there are some ponds along the trail. I always found these mountain ponds so magical. The endpoint of the trail is called Hell Valley. There is steam from the hot springs coming out
from the mountain and swirling around. This is the endpoint of the trail and we
made our way back to the cable car. We also stopped by this spot with twin
waterfalls coming down from the cliffs. These are Ryusei Falls and Ginga Falls. Ryusei
means Meteor because the water falls in a way that looks like a streaking meteor. And this is
Ginga Falls, and people called it Galaxy Falls coz it’s like the galaxy, the long and narrow
waterfall resembles streaks of light in the night sky. I am always excited to photograph
waterfalls and now I have 2 in one spot. The other day we went to Lake Kussharo, it is a
caldera lake and the largest lake in Japan that will freeze over completely in winter. And this
morning, the lake is just so calm and clear, and with all the autumn colors around. There is
another viewpoint further up on the mountain, but I think I would prefer the previous
one which is better for photographs. Next to Lake Kussharo, we stopped by Mount
Lo, it is an active volcano in the area. This place is covered with sulfur
smell and steam is coming out from the ground. The whole place
is so alive with the steam. And this morning, we went to Lake Akan, not far
from Lake Mashu. It is a crater lake known for its deep blue water and calm atmosphere. The lake is surrounded by mountains, creating a peaceful scene. It is the perfect place to take
a moment and enjoy the quiet beauty of the nature We are heading to a hidden spot in this
area. This is “The Child of Gods Pond”. It is known for its incredibly clear water, the
underground springs give a beautiful turquoise color and keeping the water temperature
low helps to preserve the trees and woods in the pond. With all these views, it
makes this place so unique and magical. Continue traveling to the northern part of
Hokkaido, we arrived at Shiretoko, located at the northeastern tip of the island, this place is
one of Japan’s last true wildernesses. It feels like stepping into a world with untouched nature and a quiet calm that could be rarely found anywhere else. After crossing the Shiretoko Pass to
Rausu, one of the least-opened roads in Japan. We made our way back to Sapporo,
stopping by a few more spots along the way. The autumn landscapes in Hokkaido are truly
unique. Filled with untouched, peaceful, and rich colors of the season. Every corner brought a new
perspective, and each stop along the journey gave me the chance to capture something truly special.
From the rugged mountains to the calm lakes, it’s been an incredible adventure, one that will
stay with me long after the trip is over. And, until next time, let’s keep exploring
and keep capturing the world around us.
We are traveling to Hokkaido in Japan and photographing the beautiful autumn colors in Japan’s nature!
