Inside a Tiny Japanese Diner: Home-Style Pork Soup and Tamagoyaki おばんざい鈴

Tenjinbashi, Kita Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture “Obanzai SUZU” The restaurant has only counter seating and is known for its home-style obanzai dishes and hearty pork miso soup. Obanzai refers to simple, traditional side dishes
that have been made in Kyoto homes for generations. The owner, Ms. Suzu is a mother of two and runs the restaurant while raising her children. So today as well, I left home around 7:30 and dropped my kids off at daycare. When I’m taking them to daycare, my youngest always says, “Do your best today! Have a great day!” They always say that. At first, they said it while crying, but seeing that makes me feel like I have to do my best. It really motivates me every morning. We serve lunch from Monday to Friday. We’re closed on weekends and holidays for now. All the staff are mothers. Everyone here is a mom. It’s not just about money or working without purpose. We don’t want to work just for the sake of working. If we’re going to work, then— it would be great if we could have goals, and do something meaningful together. Maybe it’s because we’re all moms, but we really want people to eat properly and be well-nourished. Before we know it, the portions end up being huge. We’re going to make hearty pork miso soup. I intentionally let this burn a little. It tastes more savory that way. There’s garlic and ginger in it. Ginger warms the body, so it’s really good for you. Everyone who eats the soup ends up sweating on their way out. The kitchen upstairs on the second floor Before opening, we prep food on both the first and second floors. Broccoli and carrot namul (Korean-style side dish) Fried red fish Fried red fish again This is really heavy. It’s so heavy it makes your face twist funny. Mapo tofu We add garlic, ginger, minced meat, and more. Gochujang Doubanjiang (spicy bean paste) Spaghetti salad Hijiki seaweed with lots of ingredients This pork miso soup is also packed with ingredients Daikon radish pickled in salt koji Spicy stir-fried konnyaku Dried shredded daikon Edamame with peperoncino flavor Honey mustard salad Curry rice It’s a little slippery here, so please be careful. This is fried red fish. Japanese-style rolled omelet set meal Teriyaki chicken Teriyaki chicken Sorry to keep you waiting. It’s heavy, so please be careful. The place is full in no time. Thank you very much. Welcome! The restaurant has a counter layout, so the distance between us and the customers feels close. It’s great to get this much food in one set meal. Did you find this place on YouTube or something? Instagram. It pops up a lot. This place was really fun. Thank you so much. (Interviewer) Do you enjoy your work? Yes, I do. I actually just— started last month. It’s a really fun place to work. I first saw Suzu-chan on my TikTok feed, and that’s how I found out about this place. I thought, “That looks like such a fun place to work.” I commute 30 minutes by train to get here. What does the staff mean to Ms. Rin? They feel like a team, like comrades. If they weren’t here, I couldn’t do this. I’m kind of wild and all over the place, but— many of them are around my mom’s age, and they treat me like their own daughter. It’s not just give and take— we support each other, and that’s how this place works.

  4. Diners like this bring much comfort to people who move to new cities for work. A place that is familiar with a team that cares.

  7. Mrs Suzu is absolutely stunning! And it’s great to see that even in today’s day and age, there are women like her shuffling work and taking care of her children with pride. The west has been ruined in this aspect. You never see that mindset even in movies or tv, where the mother will always be shown as harangued by being a working mother.
