Adventure World Adventure World opened in 1978 as “Nanki Shirahama World Safari” and initially started as a facility that combined a zoo and an aquarium. Divided into five areas such as Marine World, Safari World, and Play Zone, you can enjoy interacting with animals and attractions. The park’s theme is “A place to look at and question life. A place to notice the beauty of life.” We cherish the moments when we encounter the beauty of life. Giant panda breeding research is highly regarded worldwide, and many pandas have been born as a result of joint research between Japan and China. Approximately 120 species and 1,600 animals are kept in the park, and a night safari is held during the night hours, allowing you to observe animals in a different way than during the day. Shirahama Onsen Shirahama Onsen boasts a history of over 1,300 years and is known as one of the three oldest hot springs in Japan. In ancient times it was called “Muro no Yu” and its name was recorded in the Manyoshu. During the Edo period, it was also used by feudal lords and samurai who visited on their way to Edo, further enhancing its status as a hot spring resort. Nearby, Shirarahama is a curved white sand beach that stretches for about 620 meters, and the earliest beach opening in Honshu is held on May 3rd every year. Shirarahama has been known and loved as a scenic spot in Kii Province, but due to sand runoff after the period of high economic growth, sand from Australia has been poured in to maintain the current beautiful white sand. The white sand, emerald green sea, and palm trees on the beach give you a tropical feel, and in summer, fireworks that light up the night sky are a seasonal feature. Sandanbeki Sandanbeki is a magnificent coastal scenic spot located in Shirahama Town. It has been known since ancient times for its majestic scenery, and the place name is said to come from the “kendan” where fishermen watched over the sea. It features cliffs that reach 50 meters above sea level, caves and rocky areas at the bottom, and these topography formed by wave erosion give a sense of the power of nature and the length of time. You can go down the cliffs in an elevator and see the waves from the Pacific Ocean crashing into the caves, splashing water, and experience the fearsomeness of nature. The caves inside are said to have been used as military bases by the Kumano Navy, who played an active role in the Genpei War at the end of the Heian period, and they are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, especially seabirds. The contrast between the sea and the rocky cliffs, which change appearance with each season, is beautiful, and it is also known as a famous sunset spot. Toretore Market Toretore Market is located in Shirahama Town and opened in 1995 with the aim of providing fresh local seafood and agricultural products, and has developed into a market that is popular with local residents and tourists alike. It boasts a vast area, with multiple sales zones and eating and drinking spaces, and also hosts live sales demonstrations such as butchering shows and tasting events. With the motto of “bringing excitement, inspiration and satisfaction to all our customers,” we are promoting the good things about Shirahama and Wakayama every day. Wakayama’s main specialties include fresh seafood, agricultural products such as Nanko plums and Arita mandarins, Shirahama hot spring related products, and local sake. In the surrounding area, there are facilities such as the hot spring facility Toretore no Yu and the accommodation facility Toretore Village. Koyasan In 816, Kukai (Kobo Daishi) founded Koyasan as a base for spreading Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, and as a place where mountain worship and Buddhist culture were fused, it attracted many believers from all over Japan. During the Sengoku period, it was a religious and cultural center of faith, and many buildings were developed with donations from various daimyo. Dainichi Nyorai is enshrined at the center of the temples of Koyasan, and is considered to be a symbol of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, and numerous heritage sites filled with Japanese Buddhist art are preserved within the temples. Visiting Mount Koya is said to bring benefits such as protection from evil and praying for good health, and ancestor worship is deeply rooted in the inner sanctuary, where ancestral worship is held. It is also famous as a scenic spot during the autumn foliage season, and the vegetarian cuisine and temple lodgings offered there are popular cultural experiences of Buddhism. Nachi Falls Nachi Falls belongs to the Kumano Sanzan, which has long been the center of Kumano faith, and its mysterious waterfalls have been important as the subject of religious ceremonies and pilgrimages. It is also mentioned in the Nihon Shoki and Manyoshu, and symbolizes Japan’s traditional culture that regards nature itself as sacred, and its teachings have spread throughout the country. During the Heian period, when pilgrimages to Kumano were popular, aristocrats and commoners visited the waterfall, and many writers and artists visited it after the Middle Ages, and its beauty was praised. Nachi Falls boasts the highest drop of 133 meters in Japan as a single-tiered waterfall, and with a volume of water of 1 ton per second flowing down, a dynamic splash and roar echoes through the forest. The waterfall itself is considered the object of worship of Oonamuchi-no-kami, the deity of Hiroki-jinja Shrine, a branch shrine of Kumano Nachi Taisha, and is registered as part of the World Heritage Site “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range . ” Kumano Kodo The Kumano Kodo has been used as a pilgrimage route to the Kumano Sanzan since ancient times, and has played an important role in supporting Kumano faith, which combines nature worship and Buddhist thought. The route was gradually developed as many pilgrims used it since ancient times, and in 2004 it was registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.” The origin of the Kumano Kodo dates back to before the Heian period, when aristocrats were known to have made pilgrimages to Kumano, and in the Kamakura period it spread to samurai and common people, becoming a symbol of Buddhist faith. At the Kumano Sanzan Shrines (Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha), the destinations of the Kumano Kodo, Kumano Sansho Gongen is enshrined as the main deity at each shrine. Wakayama Castle was built in 1585 by Toyotomi Hidenaga , the younger brother of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, on the orders of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It was designed on a hill overlooking the Kinokawa River, with the main and small castle towers connected by a multi-gate tower. During the Edo period, it was the residence of the Kishu Tokugawa family, one of the three main Tokugawa families that played an important role within the shogunate. After the Meiji Restoration, it was partially demolished, but in 1935 it was designated as a historic site. During the Tokugawa period , temple towns and samurai residences were located on the south side of the castle, and townspeople’s areas spread to the east, forming the basis of the current Shinmachi and Kitashinmachi areas. It has the form of a flatland castle, with distinctive castle towers, turrets, stone walls, and moats. The high stone walls in particular are highly defensive, and the castle is designed to be resistant to attacks, with a design known as “ninja-gaeshi.” Currently, Wakayama Castle is open to the public, mainly the castle tower and castle grounds that were rebuilt after the war, and there is a garden and museum inside the castle, where you can learn more about the history of the region. Kimiidera TempleKimiidera Temple was founded in 770 by the Tang Dynasty monk Tamemitsu Shonin, and has been widely known as a sacred place since ancient times, named after the three pure springs that spring up within the temple grounds: Kissho-sui, Yangliu-sui, and Seijo-sui. Since the Heian period, it has developed as a place for cultural and religious exchange, and is the second temple of the Thirty-Three Kannon Temples of the Western Provinces. The main image is the Eleven-Headed Kannon Bodhisattva, who is worshipped as a merciful Buddha who saves many people, and a huge Buddha statue is enshrined there along with statues of Amida Nyorai and Acala. Kimiidera Temple is known for its wide range of benefits, including matchmaking, safe childbirth, prayers for good health, and protection from evil, and there is a legend that drinking the water from the well will grant your wishes. The temple grounds are filled with beautiful nature in every season, and are famous for their early-blooming cherry blossoms. From the main hall, which can be reached by climbing 231 steps, you can enjoy a spectacular view of Wakayama city. Tomogashima Tomogashima is a group of uninhabited islands in the Kitan Strait, and is the collective name for four small islands: Okinoshima, Jinoshima, Torashima, and Kamishima. Due to their geographical importance, they were developed as military bases during the Meiji period, and were particularly used as defense bases by installing artillery batteries. After World War II, their use as military facilities ended, and they are now preserved as historical buildings, and you can visit the facilities that remain as they were at the time. Tomogashima has a unique topography caused by marine erosion, with steep cliffs and rugged rocky areas, and the island’s rich natural environment serves as a stopover for migratory birds. Over time, the scenery of military facilities and ruins abandoned by humans that have been swallowed up by the forest is reminiscent of the world of Ghibli works.
