Today we are at Shirakawa-go in Japan These three gassho houses are called “San Koya” Three houses neatly aligned, a popular photo spot It is April now so some snow has not yet melted But fortunately, the weather is nice today Shirakawa-go was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 The architecture is called “gassho-zukuri” (合掌造り) It features roofs covered with thatch The roofs resemble hands clasped in prayer at a 60-degree angle Hence the name “gassho-zukuri” The steep roof design allows snow to easily slide off the roof preventing the building from collapsing under the weight of snow The snow in winter here is astonishingly heavy Snowfall can reach 170 cm One of the areas with the heaviest snowfall in winter The most beautiful season in Shirakawa-go is winter because illumination events are held on winter nights The snowy scenery combined with the soft yellow lights creates a fantastical and tranquil beauty, like a fairyland Illumination events require reservations During the event period visitors without reservations must leave before the event starts in the evening In ancient times, heavy snow in winter caused transportation disruptions, isolating the area from the outside world making it a true hidden gem Legend has it that ancestors came here to live in seclusion after the Genpei War in the 13th century Due to harsh natural conditions villagers are highly united This spirit is demonstrated when changing the thatched roof When a household’s roof needs repair the entire village comes together to help This spirit is locally known as “Yui no Kokoro” (結之心) Even today this spirit has been passed down In today’s fast-paced society it is the most precious and worth cherishing intangible asset The snow has melted In March, temperatures rise Spring arrives and the snow begins to melt Cherry blossoms in Shirakawa-go bloom around mid-April In summer, Shirakawa-go is surrounded by lush green trees, fresh and comfortable In late October, autumn arrives It is the best time to enjoy the fall foliage Each season offers unique beauty Winter is the most dreamy and captivating Thanks to the opening of highways you can visit year-round For safety reasons, buses are recommended in winter You can depart from Takayama or Kanazawa Take Nohi or Hokutetsu buses to Shirakawa-go Seats are reservation-based Seats are reservation-based In ancient times, the main industry in the village was sericulture

Being in the shrine, they are well-preserved Myousenji Temple was founded in 1748 It belongs to the Shinshu Otani school of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism The temple is constructed in the gassho-zukuri style The kuri (temple kitchen and storage) also features the gassho-zukuri roof Inside, there are five levels of spatial planning It is now a museum showcasing cultural artifacts In front is a traditional rice mill hut It exudes a rustic charm Koi fish in Japan symbolize courage and perseverance Koi are known for overcoming adversity by swimming upstream Every year before Children’s Day (May 5th) families hang koi streamers to pray for their children’s health and growth and encourage them to face challenges with courage Since becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site Shirakawa-go’s popularity has attracted visitors from around the globe every year Fish leisurely swim in roadside gutters They seem unaffected by the onlookers calmly swimming around The construction technique of gassho-zukuri is evident in these smaller structures No nails are used Wooden structures are joined by mortise and tenon and tied with twigs or ropes made from herbaceous plants Beams and columns are made of beech and cypress During strong winds or earthquakes the structure sways slightly to reduce destructive forces achieving earthquake and typhoon resistance Nagase House has a history of 250 years Visitors stop to take photos beside cherry trees lining the road This red cherry tree is not fully bloomed Its thick trunk indicates its old age buds are yet to bloom Let’s move forward Kanda House was built during the Edo period It took ten years to complete The craftsmanship is exquisite Visitors can tour the interior (Entry fee: 400 JPY) This gassho-zukuri building features cobblestone flooring It caught my attention The flooring is carefully crafted using uneven stones creating a rustic yet harmonious natural aesthetic The eaves of the building are also constructed without nails using ropes for fastening I discovered a beautiful wooden walkway with clear mountain streams below The shimmering water and absence of noisy crowds make strolling while listening to the stream soothing White Yoshino cherry blossoms have bloomed in the fields The cherry blossoms in the back right of the scene are also in bloom The cherry tree in front is still budding Wada House has over 300 years of history During the Edo period, its residents served as village leaders and guards It is the largest and oldest gassho-zukuri building in the area The first and second floors are open for viewing while parts of the building are still used as residence Looking closely, swallows can be seen under the eaves In Japan, swallows symbolize family harmony bringing luck and happiness to the household (Entry fee: 400 JPY) (On the Wada House explanation board) On the hill, there is an observation deck, the remains of the ancient Ogimachi Castle It offers a panoramic view of Shirakawa-go (Photos taken from the observation deck) Panoramic shots of Shirakawa-go are often taken from here Panoramic shots of Shirakawa-go are often taken from here Photography enthusiasts love this spot It is a 15-minute walk to the observation deck Alternatively, you can take a shuttle bus During heavy snowfall in winter the observation deck may be closed Ahead is the bus terminal This is the only natural hot spring in Shirakawa-go It features outdoor baths offering views of mountain ranges and clear streams Entry fee: 800 JPY per person After enjoying the bath, you can visit nearby spots such as Hakusui Waterfall and Rokkamura Today, we walked from the south to the north of Shirakawa-go My legs are a bit tired now Perfect timing for relaxing in a hot spring Thank you for your accompanying today

🚌 交通方式
白川鄉雖然隱藏在深山裡,但有高速公路經過,所以交通方便:

從名古屋:搭乘JR高山本線到高山站,然後轉濃飛巴士直達白川鄉(大約50分鐘車程)。

從金澤:搭乘濃飛巴士或北鐵巴士,約1.5小時就能抵達這座童話村。
