Today, we will head to Echizen Ono Castle on the Kuzuryu Line. We can see the castle tower from the train window. We will get off at Echizen Ono Station. It is about a 20-minute walk from the station to the castle. Echizen Ono Castle was built by Kanamori Nagachika, who was granted land by Oda Nobunaga. Ono Castle is also famous as a castle in the sky that floats in a sea of clouds depending on the weather conditions. On the way to the castle, we found Hiyoshi Shrine . It seems that this was also a castle during the Nanboku-cho period. It is said that Asakura Kageakira also lived here. The remains of the moat remain . Next, we will go to the retirement residence of the feudal lord. This is where Doi Toshitada lived after he handed over the family headship and retired. We will head to Yanagiya Shrine, where Doi Toshitada is enshrined. Doi Toshitada was the feudal lord of the Ono Domain in Echizen Province during the late Edo period. He was a person who made an effort to rebuild the Ono Domain. We will start climbing from the back gate behind Yanagiya Shrine. Today, we will head towards Hyakkenzaka on the way. During the Edo period, samurai used Hyakkenzaka to go to the main citadel. Hyakkenzaka is a steep slope to prevent enemy intrusion. We finally made it to the top. The stone monument reads “Remains of the Honmaru Castle Gate”. There is a stone monument of Echizen Ono Castle. The castle tower is now in sight. On the north side of the main citadel, there is a statue of Kanamori Nagachika. Now, let’s go up the stone wall. The reconstructed castle tower seen from below. It is said that when the castle was built, there was a large two-story, three-story castle tower with a watchtower. Let’s go up to the castle tower. This is a ridgepole tile from the main citadel of Ono Castle. This is an excavated stone wall with the year Bunka 7 engraved on it. We have reached the top floor. You can see that it is a basin surrounded by mountains. On the way back, we go down the stone steps called Musha Nobori. The rough stone walls are magnificent. We will also go to see the other side of the castle. This pond is Ofuku Pond, named after Kanamori Nagachika’s wife. There used to be a storehouse for weapons here. There is also a gate on the south side. There is a statue of Doi Toshitada here. On the way back, we will go down from the north side. Kinryu-in Temple. We will go to see the samurai residences in the castle town. This is the former Tamura family home. This is the former Uchiyama family home. There was a water tank for the abundant spring water. The spring water is still used for daily life. Finally, there is the grave of Asakura Yoshikage, who escaped from Ichijodani, so we will go there. Thank you for watching.
