蝉の渓谷（南牧村・砥沢地区）
群馬県南牧村、砥沢地区にある「蝉の渓谷」は、村の中央を流れる南牧川に架かる「蝉橋」周辺に広がる自然の景勝地です。
橋を渡ってすぐ左側には駐車場があり、渓谷を見下ろせるスポットとして親しまれています。綺麗なトイレやテーブルも整備されているので、ちょっとした休憩にも最適です。
両岸には岩山が迫り、水の流れによって削られて広がった川幅と、迫力ある地形が特徴です。これらの岩山は「秩父層群」と呼ばれる堆積岩で構成されており、硬く緻密ながら、衝撃に弱く砕けやすい性質があります。
「蝉（せみ）」という地名は、もともと「狭い流れ」を意味する古い言葉からきているそうです。
渓谷周辺には豊かな自然が広がり、四季折々でさまざまな表情を見せてくれます。集落から少し山の方へ入った場所にあるため、とても静かで、人の気配がほとんどありません。聞こえるのは、川の音と鳥のさえずりだけ――それが、心を静かに癒してくれます。
渓谷の入口には、江戸時代の俳人・金沢闌更（らんこう）が1773年に建てた芭蕉句碑があり、
「閑さや 岩にしみ入る 蝉の声」
という名句が刻まれています。この句碑は「蝉の渕付芭蕉塚」として、昭和53年に南牧村の名勝に指定されました。

ランチは「道の駅 甘楽」で地粉の窯焼きピザを食べました。
イタリアのレストランで修行した職人が本格ピザ窯で焼いてくれます。
地粉のピザは、「もちもち」です。ふちは「カリッ」とした食感で最高。
王道のマルゲリータから「轟みそピザ」など。新鮮な野菜のピザは絶品です。

In Semi Valley, nestled in Nammoku Village, Gunma, the only sounds you’ll hear are the flowing river and birdsong.
This quiet gorge—so still it feels almost eerie—is a favorite healing spot for those who seek solitude and nature’s raw beauty.
With its dramatic rock formations from the Chichibu geological group, a haiku monument by Edo-period poet Kanzawa Ransen, and ever-changing seasonal landscapes, this is a place where silence speaks louder than words.

🏞 Semi Valley (Toshizawa District, Nammoku Village)
Semi Valley is a scenic gorge located in the Toshizawa district of Nammoku Village, Gunma Prefecture.
It surrounds Sami Bridge, which spans the Nammoki River running through the village center.
Just after crossing the bridge, you’ll find a small parking area to the left, offering a view of the valley below.
Well-maintained toilets and picnic tables are available for a short break.
On both sides, rocky cliffs rise steeply, and the river, having carved through them over time, has created a surprisingly wide gorge.
These cliffs are made of hard sedimentary rock from the Chichibu formation—dense and solid, yet prone to shattering under impact.
The name “Semi” is believed to derive from an old word for “narrow stream.”
Surrounded by nature, the valley offers beautiful scenery throughout the seasons.
Tucked away in the mountains beyond the village, it’s extremely quiet, with almost no human presence—only the soothing sounds of water and birds.
At the valley entrance stands a haiku monument built in 1773 by Edo-period poet Kanzawa Ransen.
It bears the famous verse by Matsuo Bashō:
“Such stillness— / the cicadas’ cry / seeps into the rocks.”
This monument, known as the Bashō Stele at the Sami Pool, was designated a village cultural landmark in 1978.

We had lunch at Michi-no-Eki Kanra (Roadside Station Kanra), where local wheat is used to bake pizza in a traditional wood-fired oven.

From classic Margherita to unique local flavors like Todoroki Miso Pizza, and pizzas topped with fresh vegetables—it’s a must-try spot.
