This trip begins in Hokkaido I landed in Hakodate and started heading north all the way to Asahikawa This episode begins in Hakodate Hakodate Airport is small The air feels cool and fresh The road leads from the airport to the harbor A breeze comes from the sea That’s how this journey begins The first meal in Hokkaido feels like Hokkaido They cook the rice over charcoal Each bite tastes like the sea made it for me Fresh in the most natural way Nothing extra By the afternoon Most people had left Only a few shops were still open But I liked it that way I could really feel myself, in the moment At Goryokaku Park Takeda Hisaburo designed this star-shaped fortress They say touching his statue’s head makes you smarter So it’s been polished bright Hakodate used to be called with different characters One of the first ports to open to the world It used to be the administrative center here Back at Goryokaku Tower The ice cream made with milk from Yamakawa Farm, a local favorite in Hakodate Cold and creamy melting slowly in the mouth Brings a quiet kind of happiness This harbor the same Hakodate Port seen from the morning market These red brick buildings were once trade warehouses The mark on the wall comes from a carpenter’s square symbolizing honesty and precision you’ll see high ceilings and wooden beams are still preserved there’s a wooden-style Starbucks Lucky Pierrot, a local burger shop the Yakitori-Bento from Hasegawa Store a small regret this trip—I didn’t get to try it But I did get to taste the award-winning cheesecake Also made with Yamakawa milk Soft, warm, milky Delicate, but not overly sweet Dinner was a buffet with all-you-can-drink alcohol too Fun fact lychees imported to Japan need to be fumigated That’s why they look like this Before dinner there was still a decision to make Should I chase the famous night view from the mountain or stay in and enjoy the hot spring hotel What would you choose Then I found out the hotel offers a private hot spring room Just an extra 1,078 yen 50 minutes of time just for yourself An open-air bath on the balcony The bath is out on the balcony Soaking in the warm water at night with city lights and stars in view I gave up the night view but this private moment felt even more special If you ever stay here this kind of time is truly worth it Ichimonji is a popular ramen spot just next door Pretty famous around here Hakodate is known for salt-based ramen It’s just across the street Some people even take a taxi to get here That’s how popular it is Spotted a strange but cool bus on the way There it was—the Ganso Ramen Bus But for some reason, completely empty that night So I played it safe and walked over to Ichimonji Ramen Even late at night, every seat was still taken That says a lot I ordered the light-taste salt ramen with grilled chashu was seriously good The clear salt broth warms from throat to heart Would you choose a popular spot like this Or take a chance on the mysterious ramen bus? Hakodate made the first day in Hokkaido feel complete The journey is just beginning Next comes a road filled with northern scenery A lake that stole my heart at first glance And a volcano gently steaming right in front of me
