【Hokkaido, Japan】3-days food tour to enjoy 32 gourmet foods in the port city of Hakodate(Part2)

This time, I will send you Part 2 of the food tour of Hakodate, a port city in Hokkaido. Please watch it together with the video of Part 1 uploaded last time. The morning of the second day in Hakodate. Good morning. It’s a bit cloudy today. I’m glad I went to Motomachi and the Bay Area yesterday. Well, let’s eat breakfast first. The first meal is a rare takeout. There is a unique bento that I wanted to eat when I came to Hakodate. I think this is quite rare in other areas. I was looking forward to it. It opens early in the morning, so I’ll eat it at the inn. I came to the premises of Hakodate Station. Before buying a bento, I came to this “Shikisaikan”. I bought this sweet “Hakodate Yukinko”. It is a popular daifuku sweet made by “Kafukudo Kitchen” in Hakodate City. I bought one for dessert after the meal♪ Now, let’s go to the bento shop. I got the bento I wanted at “Shunka”. Oh, I like this “Herring Migaki Bento” because it’s delicious. Now, let’s go back to the inn and eat. Let’s open it right away. A nice aroma is floating around. This is the impactful “Iwa Nori Dandan” bento (1,100 yen). This pitch black bento is mainly made of super high-quality seaweed from Matsumae. It is two-tiered and contains only seaweed and rice. Let’s eat♪ Wow, this is really delicious. The scent of the sea spreads in your mouth♪ It has a rich taste, and even just the seaweed and rice is very satisfying. Matsumae Town is the southernmost town in Hokkaido, and rock seaweed, which is only harvested in the winter, is rare and very high-quality. It is said to be a phantom seaweed that is almost impossible to eat outside the local area because it is not widely distributed. There are some shops in the local area where you can eat it, but it is difficult to go there. Therefore, when I found out that I could buy it at Hakodate Station, I wanted to try it. This is a high-quality bento using seaweed that costs about 1,000 yen per sheet. It was a luxurious breakfast. Now that I’ve finished eating the bento… I’ll have dessert♪ It says to let it thaw naturally at room temperature for about 40 minutes. I wonder if it thawed while I was eating the bento? It looks like a daifuku. Let’s eat. Yes, it’s cold and delicious♪ The gyuhi is filled with sweet potato made from sweet potatoes from Atsutabe Town. It has a smooth texture and goes well with the chewy gyuhi. There are other flavors, but this time I bought the plain one. I was able to enjoy the gently sweet dessert. I’m full. Thank you for the meal! After finishing breakfast, I’m going to work. Let’s do our best on the second day! I finished my morning work in front of Hakodate Station, so I’m going to eat lunch. Now, for my first meal of the day… I’m going to eat a hamburger that I’ve been interested in in Hakodate. Oh, I can see it. I went into a restaurant called “BURGER SHOP HOT BOX”. I saw it on a TV program and was looking forward to it. Western music is playing inside the restaurant, and it has a stylish atmosphere. This is the menu. Everything looks like it’s filling. There are plenty of toppings, not just hamburgers. I felt like drinking something carbonated, so I ordered a drink as well. I got ginger ale♪ While I was waiting while drinking my ginger ale… I’ve been waiting for this! This looks delicious♪ The most popular bacon cheeseburger (1390 yen). Beef, bacon, cheddar cheese, and tomato are also thick. The fries are thin and crispy, which is my favorite type. It is wrapped in paper and eaten. It feels heavy when you hold it. Okay, let’s eat. Delicious♪ It’s a satisfying coarsely ground meat. The meat is 100% beef, a combination of “Oguni Wagyu” from Hokuto City and Australian beef. It’s filled with plenty of meat and has a great meaty texture. The charcoal grilled aroma is also the best. The bread is also very thick. It’s been a while since I’ve eaten such an authentic burger. The meat is just delicious. Damn, the meat juice spilled. This will happen if you tilt it too much, so be careful lol. Wow, it was delicious, thank you for the meal! The second day’s lunch also got off to a good start♪ Now, next we’ll take the city tram for a little ride. By the way, there is a McDonald’s that opened in 2014 on the left. However, there are many delicious hamburger restaurants in front of Hakodate Station, so McDonald’s seems to be struggling. Hakodate also has a delicious local hamburger restaurant called “Lucky Pierrot”. However, McDonald’s is convenient, so I usually go there. I like McDonald’s fries the best. I think people in Hakodate are happy that there are many options. While I was thinking about McDonald’s, I arrived at my destination station. I got off at Fukaborimachi Station. From here, I walked to the next store. However, I was looking forward to the next one, but… ・・・・・ Unfortunately, it was closed… I will look forward to it next time I come to Hakodate. By the way, the name of the restaurant is “Okizuke Marutai”. It is a restaurant where you can eat squid pickled on a boat out at sea and squid curry. Now, I have arrived at the last stop, Yunokawa Station. It is the last stop on the opposite side of yesterday’s Motomachi Bay Area. Hakodate Airport is also nearby. It takes about 30 minutes by tram from Hakodate Station, but there is a shop I wanted to go to here. I saw it♪ It’s there. I came to “Coffee Room Kikuchi”. This shop is also loved by the locals of Hakodate. The famous menu is soft serve ice cream. Since I was there, I ordered a drink as well. They also have a menu that is typical of a coffee shop. I got a mix of mocha and vanilla♪ It’s a soft serve ice cream that looks pretty hard. I ordered “Coffee (490 yen)” for my drink. The ice is coffee, so it doesn’t get thin even when it melts. I was relaxing and the ice cream had already melted lol. Yes, it’s delicious! It has a texture similar to sorbet. You can really taste the coffee. I think it’s worth visiting for tourists too. This shop is ranked 10th in the ranking of “Places that symbolize Hakodate”. 1st to 9th place are places that you should see at least once if you come to Hakodate. Hakodate is especially famous for its night view, which is the number 1 view from Mt. Hakodate. The seventh place “Back Night View” refers to the night view with Mt. Hakodate in the background. I finished the soft serve before my hands got sticky from melting. While I was eating the soft serve, the coffee also became much stronger. When I mixed it, the color became darker. Ah, this is delicious. The coffee is strong and the balance with the milk is exquisite. The bitterness of the ice is also good. This shop is visited by customers one after another while I was eating. However, no one comes inside the shop. There is a small takeout window outside the shop. When you park your car in the parking lot, buy a soft serve here and leave immediately. There seems to be a lot of traffic outside the window. I think that’s how popular it is with locals. I was very satisfied to be able to visit the shop I had been longing for! . Thank you for the meal. Actually, I went to this shop a few years ago, but it was closed for a while, so I visited again this time. By the way, there are many delicious restaurants in the Yunokawa area. I went to this “Kihara” on a trip, and it was very delicious♪ You can enjoy luxurious sushi at a reasonable price. It’s a good idea to go there together with “Kikuchi”. Next, instead of taking the tram, I walked towards Hakodate Station. I arrived at “Yakidango Gingetsu”. This is also a Japanese confectionery shop popular with locals. I took out the dumplings, which are also the name of the shop. I ate them at the inn at night. Since it is close to Hakodate Airport, I sometimes hear a powerful sound from the sky. Near the bus stop to the next shop, I discovered a foot bath. Many cultural figures, including Ryunosuke Akutagawa, have visited Yunokawa Onsen, known as the inner sanctum of Hakodate. Also, at the end of the line opposite Yunokawa Station, there is Yachigashira Onsen, where you can take a bath in a public bath. Hakodate has an abundance of hot springs. I couldn’t wipe my feet, so I just touched them this time. While I was looking at the foot bath, the bus came. Let’s go to the next shop. Get off in front of the Central Library, close to Goryokaku. The shop is very close. If you go there, it’s closer to take the bus and get off in front of the Central Library. I came to “Hakotaro Goryokaku Park Branch”. This is also a popular conveyor belt sushi restaurant in Hakodate. I was looking forward to going because conveyor belt sushi is also delicious in Hokkaido♪. I immediately looked at the menu and ordered the items that caught my eye. First, today’s recommendation “Raw tuna platter” (560 yen). It’s dark in color. It looks fresh and delicious. Next, “Gagome grated yam and shrimp paste soup” (220 yen). This also looks delicious. Let’s eat♪. Yes, it’s delicious♪ The warm soup is soaking up my taste. Now, let’s eat the tuna… Ah, it’s delicious… my mouth is happy. It’s moist and has a rich flavor♪ The negitoro is also very sweet. I also like the taste of the gagome grated yam fish ball soup. Since I’m on a roll, let’s order something else♪ I ordered “Three kinds of engawa platter” (396 yen). From the top, seared fin, burnt soy sauce, burnt miso. This is the first time I’ve eaten miso fin. The mellow miso goes well with the fat. The crunchy texture and aroma are good. There are still many other menus that interest me. I ordered the “Hokkaido Sammai” with octopus, sweet shrimp, and squid (462 yen). The octopus is very chewy, and the more you chew it, the more delicious it becomes. I also ordered the “Oki-zuke Gunkan Squid Gunkan” (190 yen). because I hadn’t been able to eat it earlier. The richness of the marinade sauce is exquisite. I also ordered “Fried Squid Cartilage” (240 yen). Apparently, squids have cartilage in their heads to protect them from impact. Yes, it’s delicious♪ It’s soft and juicy. This makes me want a beer lol. The last dish is the luxurious “Kaiho Kobore Maki” (460 yen). Seafood is piled high on top of the kappa roll. It looked just as it looked, and it was also luxurious in my mouth. I love the crunchy texture of the flying fish roe. Finally, I was able to enjoy all the seafood at once. Thank you for the meal. It was a little small, but I enjoyed the sushi. Now, I’m going to walk to the next restaurant. Nearby is Goryokaku, a tourist attraction in Hakodate. Goryokaku was built in 1866 and is designated as one of the 100 most famous castles in Japan. It is said to have been built based on Western design ideas. It has a structure called “Ryo-Hoshiki”, which is a star-shaped structure made by combining triangles. It has the advantage of being able to snipe enemies climbing the walls from the side, and being difficult to target from outside enemies. It was built mainly to protect the Hakodate Magistrate’s Office, which was opened by the Edo Shogunate at that time, from overseas military forces. For that reason, it is built inland so that cannonballs fired from the port by foreign warships cannot reach it. However, after the collapse of the Edo Shogunate, the former Shogunate forces took control in the Hakodate War in 1868. After that, the Hakodate Magistrate’s Office, located inside Goryokaku, became the headquarters, and the stage for the civil war against the counterattacking new government forces. However, of course, the Magistrate’s Office also carried out government work on a regular basis. In the war against the new government forces, this building became an unexpected weak point. There was a watchtower on top of the building that overlooked the distance. The tall watchtower could be seen slightly from the outer wall. It was also clearly visible from the distant battleships of the new government forces. This was a fatal problem, as it should not have been visible in the first place. It seems that the former Shogunate army also noticed this and hurriedly removed the watchtower, but it was too late. After completing ballistic calculations, the new government forces began bombardment, and the castle lost its function in an instant. The Hakodate Magistrate’s Office was moved here to avoid attacks by foreign battleships. However, by the time the actual battle began, cannons had evolved to the point where bullets could reach them, and they were creating their own targets, leading to a rather ironic outcome. The Hakodate Magistrate’s Office was demolished after the war, and the current building, including the watchtower, was restored. You can’t climb the watchtower, but there are exhibits and a large hall, so there are quite a few things to see. And that’s Goryokaku Tower. You can look down on the star-shaped Goryokaku from above. A photo from the past. The view is great and you can see all the way to Mt. Hakodate. Now , after a walk around Goryokaku, we head to the next shop. This is also a famous ramen shop, but we’ll go there next time. Our next destination is that shop over there. We came to Lucky Pierrot Goryokaku Park Front Store, a hamburger shop that represents Hakodate. A familiar character greets us in front of the store. The inside of the store is also quite lively. Of course, the signature menu is hamburgers. However, today we’re going to try the soft serve ice cream. I had the “Lucky Guarana Float”, a new specialty. The interior is as flashy as ever. There are uniforms of local baseball players in the store. This player is from Nanae Town, next to Hakodate. I was waiting for this♪ There is also soft serve ice cream. Let’s eat it. Looking at it again, the mug is big lol. Oh, this soft serve ice cream is so delicious! It’s as smooth as silk and very rich♪ This may be the best soft serve ice cream I’ve eaten this year… I can see why the store recommends it. I should have eaten it sooner. It’s a shame that the amount is so small. On the other hand, it’s quite difficult to drink the drink lol. The soft serve ice cream quickly dissolved in the drink. All I had to do was drink the drink. The soft serve ice cream melted and felt smoother than usual. I drank it nonstop until the end. Thank you for the meal! That said, that soft serve ice cream was delicious… It seems good to just eat soft serve ice cream. I got on the bus and returned to Hakodate Station. Now, I’ll go to one more place for lunch. This is also a standard place in Hakodate. “Hakodate Western Confectionery Snaffles”. Whenever I come to Hakodate, I want to eat there. I’ve been to this shop before, but this is the first time I’ve eaten inside. The seats are on the second floor. This also looks delicious♪ A set of fruit tart and iced coffee (800 yen). I also got one each of their specialty “cheese omelette” and “steamed chocolate” (194 yen). I took a sip of iced coffee. I think I’ll start with the “Cheese Omelette”. Let’s eat. Yes, it’s super delicious♪ As always, I wonder how they make it, it has a unique soft texture. It melts smoothly in the mouth, and you can’t taste this anywhere else. The rich cheese flavor is also great. The “Steamed Chocolate” is also moist and soft. It’s just the right amount of sweet and delicious♪ The aroma of cacao is nice. It goes well with iced coffee. Come to think of it, this might be the first time I’ve eaten it with a fork. I think I ate it with my hands when I bought it as a souvenir. Then I eat the fruit tart that I’ve been curious about. It’s sparkling and beautiful. This is also delicious♪ It has a luxurious feel. As expected, eating fruit tart makes me happy. All the fruits are fresh and juicy. The balance of sweetness between the tart and the fruit is exquisite. I usually buy them as souvenirs, but it’s also nice when I want to take a break. I slowly finished it all. Now, after leaving the store, I will complete my afternoon plans. I did my last work in Hakodate until the evening. Well, today is my last night in Hakodate. Tomorrow is my day off, but I’ll be back in the evening, so I want to make sure I don’t have any regrets. First, I went to this restaurant near Hakodate Station. I came to “Ikasei Daimon.” I was surprised when I was shown to my seat. There is a big fish tank in front of me. This is fun. Squids are swimming back and forth. Looking at the menu, there are many squid dishes. There are many dishes from the standard to the unusual♪ There are many other dishes besides squid dishes. I’ll have sake as my drink. There are many brands, but which one should I choose…? I chose “Misogi no Mai.” The sake I ordered and. Yamaimo and Tobiko. A dish of okra mixed with okra came out as an appetizer. In addition, squid sashimi (880 yen). It’s the second day in a row, but it’s delicious no matter how many times I eat it♪ It’s still moving because it was just filleted. Let’s eat. It has a crunchy texture and is extremely delicious♪ No matter how many times I eat it, I always have the same impression lol. The flesh is so clear and beautiful. The more you chew it, the sweeter it tastes. The flavor of the sake goes well with sashimi. It’s full of umami. The squid liver is even more delicious when eaten with sake. The sticky, rich flavor is addictive♪ Sometimes I eat the appetizers. I slowly enjoy the squid and sake. This year, I also had delicious squid in Fukuoka Prefecture. In other words, I’ve been able to splurge in both the north and south of Japan♪ There were other dishes that caught my eye. I ordered butter-fried gokko fish. I’ve never heard of this fish, but I wonder what it tastes like…? When I picked it up with my chopsticks, the flesh trembled. It felt like it was divided into a gelatinous part and a white part. Yes, the texture was just as it looked. It contains a lot of collagen. However, maybe it was a bone? . There were also hard parts that were inedible. This fish is also known as “hoteiuo” and is mainly caught in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region. There is also a local dish called “gokko soup”. Besides collagen, the fish also has a soft white texture. The rich taste of butter and mayonnaise is delicious. The squid legs that came with it were deep-fried. I dipped them in mayonnaise and soy sauce. I like the soft, squid-like texture. After eating the squid and “gokko”, I wonder if I should order other squid dishes? After some hesitation, I ordered “homemade squid gyoza” (580 yen). I wonder if there is squid inside? I also added some alcohol. I ordered “haskap sour” (420 yen), which is typical of Hokkaido. Now that everything is ready, let’s eat. It’s delicious♪ The main ingredient is minced meat, but there is squid in between. It’s refreshing to feel the texture of squid in the gyoza. The refreshing “haskap sour” also goes well with the gyoza♪ The gyoza skin is chewy. I think this skin goes well with the squid. Wow, it was delicious… I think I’ll finish with nigiri sushi. I also ordered “Crystal Squid Sushi (580 yen)”. And “Grilled Wagyu Beef Sushi” (480 yen). This is delicious. You can really taste the sweetness of the squid. I slowly savored it. Next was Wagyu beef sushi. I wonder if the thing on top is ponzu jelly? This must be delicious too. Yes, I was right♪ The deliciousness of the meat spreads throughout my mouth, so I recommend this too. And then I discovered dessert♪ . Red-fleshed melon called “Rupia Red” (280 yen). I never thought I’d get Hokkaido melon♪. Sweet and fresh. It was refreshing and a good way to finish. Even so, this restaurant’s other dishes were delicious besides the squid. There are many dishes that are typical of Hokkaido. So I’d like to try various dishes again. By the way, this is the only place where you can see the fish tank, so I was lucky to be able to sit down. Ah, it was delicious… Thank you for the meal! Now, I’ll walk a little to the next restaurant. I came to “Horan”. This is a long-established Chinese restaurant founded in 1950. Following on from yesterday, I had the salt ramen, a specialty of Hakodate. This is a restaurant that preserves the taste of traditional salt ramen. I also ordered a half-size “Zariji”. First, the salt ramen. The soup is incredibly clear. “Zariji” looks similar to fried chicken. First, I started with the soup. Ah, it soaks in… It’s a light and gentle soup. It’s as easy to drink as it looks. It’s completely different from the salt ramen I had at “Shinano” yesterday. I also had the noodles. They were medium-thin noodles, and went well with the soup. The ingredients were simple: bamboo shoots, green onions, and char siu. Lean red meat with no fat also went well with this soup. It was a very comforting taste. Next I had the “Zariji”. Yes, it was delicious♪ The batter was crispy. The meat was full of flavor and was filling. It seems to be good to add sauce to it. The richness of the flavor gives it a different taste. Personally, I prefer the “Shinano” I had yesterday. But this was the taste of Hakodate Shio Ramen that I imagine. I have the impression that it is the symbol of Hakodate Shio Ramen. I ate it all without getting bored. Ah, it was delicious… Thank you for the meal! Now, I’ll go to one more place. This is “Ryuho” that I went to before. The “Golden Salt Ramen” at this shop is also delicious. There are many shops in this “Daimon Yokocho” and it’s hard to choose. I went to one of them, “Hakodate Bar”. It’s a counter seat in a stall-like shop. I like this kind of motley atmosphere♪ The menu that catches your eye is lined up on the wall above. Basically, all items are 450 yen. The specialty of the shop is pork dishes. They serve “SPF Pork”. For the drink, I ordered “Hakodate Blue”. It is colored with blue lychee liqueur. It’s refreshing and delicious. First, the raw bacon from “SPF Pork”. Delicious♪. The savory flavor and saltiness of the pork seeps into your body. The meat is moist and tender. It doesn’t have a strong smell, so I could eat as much as I wanted. It’s also delicious wrapped in mizuna salad. The crunchy texture of the mizuna is great. The Caesar dressing is rich and delicious. I also ordered “thick-sliced pork belly” (2 pieces: 450 yen). I like pork belly, so I often order it when it’s available at yakiniku. The fat is really good. It has a nice texture♪ It ‘s refreshing when you put wasabi on top. What should I do, I’m not sure if I should get a second serving lol. I also ordered “thick-sliced grilled lamb with herbs”. Since I’m in Hokkaido, I wanted to eat lamb. I put lemon on it. Yes, this is also delicious♪ It’s soft. The sourness of the lemon and the aroma of the herbs are fresh. I also ordered a crab cream croquette. This is also in Hokkaido, so lol. It comes with tomato sauce. Just the fact that it’s a Hokkaido crab cream croquette raises my expectations. It’s hot and delicious. Speaking of which, I had crab cream croquette two days in a row lol. The cream was just the right consistency and rich. The tomato sauce was sweet and delicious♪ Actually, this was my second time coming to this restaurant, and I still had a photo of what I ordered that time. I had forgotten what I ordered back then, but when I looked at the photo, I laughed because it was almost the same. Even the drink was the same. My tastes haven’t changed. I had fun drinking while talking about such things with the staff. Now, before going back to the inn, I took a little detour. I went to “Seico Mart”, a convenience store chain in Hokkaido. “Seico Mart” also has many specialty products. This “Yakisoba Bento” has been seen often in Tokyo recently. It was my first time seeing the miso ramen flavor. For dinner, I had “Salmon Toba Corn Chips”. For alcohol, I bought “Sapporo Classic”. In addition, I personally have nostalgic “Toyotomi Milk Coffee”. I also bought “Vitamin Castella”, a specialty of Asahikawa, as a souvenir. All that’s left is to relax at the inn. Let’s eat right away♪ Come to think of it, I haven’t had any beer today. Ahh, so delicious… Let’s open the salmon roe corn chips. The aroma wafting from the bag is so good♪ They were triangular chips. Ah, these definitely have a salmon roe feel to them. Before you know it, you’ll have finished them all. The combination of snacks and beer is the best. You can make an infinite loop with these two. Sorry. I forgot to take a picture of the Gingetsu dango I bought during the day. But the soy sauce dango with its rich sauce was especially delicious. Well, that’s the end of the second day. Please check back next time for the last day! Thank you for the mealfrom Hakodate.

  1. Wow I'm full just from watching. What happens to the stiill moving squid? I saw someone take it away. And is the pork ok to eat raw? It looked like raw bacon. But everything looked yummy.
