So, I leave for Japan tonight and I have been so busy with work and just a bunch of other stuff, traveling and whatnot. I just I’ve been so unprepared. So, this is currently what my van looks like. I have got stuff everywhere. So, I It’s currently I don’t know about 9:30, 10:00. We don’t leave till tonight, but I’m dropping Gypsy off at a friend’s house um at about two or three o’clock. So, I’ve still got to get to the shops of some last minute stuff. Uh I’ve got to go to my daughter’s to drop off other stuff there. Then we’re going out to my friend’s house and then yeah, so anyway, it’s madness in here at the moment. But yeah, very excited with me. I have a little traveler that wants to come with me. It’s a little ladybug on my backpack. So, we wound up flying into Cans and staying here for the night before we go to Japan because just the way the flight’s worked out. But, um, we got here to Cans. We did like a a red eyee to get here. So, we didn’t have any sleep cuz I just neither of us can sleep on a plane. So, we came to we arrived at the Can’s Harborside Hotel at about um I think it was 6:30 7:00 in the morning and yeah, hadn’t slept and I just said to the lady, obviously check in isn’t until 3:00 and I was like, “Is there any chance we can get the room earlier? Can I pay just to get it now if that’s possible?” And she was going, “Oh, you know, I’ll get I’ll get the cleaners to do yours first. You know, it shouldn’t be too long.” And then a gentleman jumps in and he says, “Do you want one bed or two?” And we’re like, I was like, “Oh, I don’t care. Just a bed right now would be great. Two would be fantastic.” But he goes, “Sorry, I found another room for you. We’ll get you in now.” And I was like, “Oh, we was just so happy.” And then we came up to the room. Look at this view. So yeah, what a just we were so happy and we just slept. Well, we went and got breakfast first cuz we were starving and then uh yeah, we just slept for like 3 hours or something and just pretty much stayed in the room. We did go for a bit of a walk at breakfast. And I’ll tell you what, it is so good to be back in Queensland. I have missed it so much. My hair has so much more volume here. The humidity is awesome. So, thank you so much to Can’s Harborside Hotel. You rock. And yes, it’s now the next morning. We had about 10 hours sleep last night and we’re off to Japan. [Applause] [Music] I can’t I’m excited to be [Music] Japan. Um we have arrived into Narita airport near Tokyo and we’re actually going to Tokyo for one night and then heading down to um Ky. So, but the luggage is so heavy and the wheels on Ella’s heavy luggage, thanks to her, they may have died because I took it to Kystan a couple of years ago and they died. So, she’s been dragging this heavy suitcase around. So, we’ve actually used a service um where they’re going to transport our luggage to Kyoto for us. So, we just took out what we need for tonight and that will arrive on Saturday. So, yeah, happy days. We don’t have to lug that around. Thank goodness. Um, but yeah, we’re pretty excited. So, I think tonight’s going to be a 7-Eleven dinner, which I’m actually really excited for. Oh my god. Wait, show this. Oh, we have arrived since this is so cool. [Music] So, we’re we’re headed for the train now, the Shenzen, I think it is. Uh, and that’s going to go into the heart of Tokyo where we will go to our hotel there for the night. Another hour of sitting down. Yay. Can’t wait to stop traveling. [Music] What time is it? 9:20. 9:20. We’ve been going since 7:00 this morning and we’re now in Japan. We’ve just made off the trains and we think we’ve spotted our hotel. I hope it’s our hotel cuz we’re wrecked. Uh yeah, so it’s it’s eat, shower, and sleep till tomorrow. We jump back on another train. This is cozy. [Laughter] Cozy. Cozy. Oh my goodness. The tiniest bath I’ve ever seen. Oh my god, I look terrible. Oh, I just slipped the door off. Oh. Oh my gosh, that’s hilarious. Back in. This is We’ve got a bedet. Who needs a shower when you’ve got a bedet? Well, this is cute. But we’re here for one night and then back straight on straight on the train again tomorrow. So after all that traveling, we were quite hungry and everyone had keep saying that we needed to go to 7-Eleven to get the food from there. And these are the viral strawberries and cream sandwiches we’d seen. There was a lot of different sandwich types, heaps of sushi stuff. They also had quite a lot of sweets in there, too. Japan really loves their sort of custards and sort of wheat sweet products. And then Ella was quite surprised to see that they sold alcohol in the 7-Eleven as well. But yeah, so we we got a big food haul from there. All right, time to try the viral strawberries and cream from 7-Eleven. [Music] It’s from here. She’s been in the academy. Everyone’s been here before. I I just keep following her on the train line. I’m so excited. Oh, it smells It smells a bit sour. Like it’s kind of hot like vinegar. Or maybe not. Maybe it’s just the strawberries. It’s just the strawberries. Okay. Okay. You ready? I’m so excited. is not saying much. I’m presuming that she loves it, too. This is I have no words. Um, it’s literally just strawberries literally and cream. Yeah, it’s just white bread. Cream. I don’t eat white bread, so that’s all. And we might just open up the cream puff in the fridge. In the convenient spot to open it that I can’t find. Is it just going to tear? [Music] Okay. I’ll just pull this open if you’re happy with that. Okay. Oh, okay. It’s all coming out. I’m doing a really good job. Look at that. Oh. Oh. Oh, there’s a Oh, that Oh, that’s very runny. God. Okay. Do you want to make a piece? Bottoms up. I’m just going to have a little bit. It’s It’s a different, you know, like our custard is quite thick. Yeah. This is really, but it still tastes like the custard that we put on the trifle. Let me break it up. I’m moving to Japan. I love this room so much. I don’t think I’ve ever had a wall so close to me while I’ve been on the L. Now, we did have a little bit of Japanese yen already when we got to Japan because Ella had been gifted some for her birthday. And that was handy just to buy a little bit of food and stuff, you know, as we were getting to our hotel. However, when we got there, we we’d sort of seen on social media that the ATMs at the 7-Eleven give you the best exchange rates. So, that’s what we did. And I have to admit, I didn’t look at the exchange rates because I was on holiday. I didn’t really care. So, we did go there and I was a little bit nervous, but it gave you the option to select in English and it was really easy to use. So, yes, that’s what we did. [Music] [Applause] Everybody need [Music] [Music] Huh? [Music] ED. Hang on. This is the wrong one. Mom, this is 33. This is nowhere to go. It turns out we were standing on the wrong platform. So, we ran to the correct one and we realized but missed it by seconds. So, the lady said we can jump on another train using the same tickets. We may just not have our reserve seating. Good. Yep. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the jewel. We’ve made it to Kyoto. We’re almost at a hotel. One last train. One last train. One last train. One last train and a bit of a walk. Thank goodness. Oh my gosh. Here it comes now. I know. We’re about done. We’re ready to just honk ourselves. [Music] All right. So, we’ve got our new hotel room, which we think is actually smaller than our last one. As you enter the door, the bathroom is here. There’s Ella TV. We have a chair, coat, and bed. Lucky we don’t mind being close in company. And we have the bathroom which is about the same size again. Happy days. Nishiki Markets are a fiveb block long shopping street and it just so happened to be that it was right near our hotel. It was on our list of places to go, but yeah, we actually spent quite a bit of time there when we were in Kyoto. It’s got so many shops and it feels like it just goes on forever there. I think there’s like over a hundred different shops. It seems like a lot more. It’s what it says on the internet, but there’s a lot of uh shops there. Like it’s quite a foodie district, and so some of those shops have been managed by the same families for generations. But it’s a great place to find uniquely Japan items and souvenirs if you want to buy for family and friends. Heaps of different food options. is there’s this little temple here as well. And you’ll find that all out throughout Japan is there’s little spot temples in different places. They really do uh take their religion quite seriously over there. And then you’ve got these like these crepes were amazing. Ella just couldn’t wait to get stuck into that. As you can see here, uh the cream in the everything they use over there, it’s a it’s a different sort of cream than what you would get in Australia. It’s a lot sweeter. But yeah, we just couldn’t believe it. Just kept going and going. found this cool little secondhand store. They do repurpose a lot of stuff over there as well, which is great. So, yeah, it kind of offsets the amount of plastic they put around their food. Anyway, it was a great place to explore for something different. [Music] [Music] I got a call clear. So, we had our luggage transferred from what do we have transferred? The hotel at the airport to our hotel in Kyoto. And I have actually an Air Tag in my luggage. And I’m really glad I did because we’ve been tracking the luggage. We were just a little bit nervous because of the language barrier that we, you know, we wanted to make sure we were communicating where we were correctly and everything. Anyway, so we um we I was tracking it this morning cuz it was supposed to arrive today and it was like at one location about 5 minutes away for like an hour and a half and I was like, “Oh gosh.” Anyway, it it did arrive this morning. So extremely grateful. But yeah, tip tip hot pot tip is to put an air tag in your luggage because I can’t imagine how difficult that would have been if we to find the luggage if it did go to the wrong location. Going to Nara for today. So to Nara, we’re going to go look at the deer park. So there’s going to be like free running deer that we can hopefully get some awesome photos of. [Music] Is that where we just were? No, cuz you can hang on the side. [Music] Where are you saying that? Yeah. Straight ahead. Yeah, we got this. Honestly. Oh my god. I’m looking forward to getting out amongst nature. Like it’s big enough. Get a break from the city. Yeah. But travel on people, trains, planes. I need to hug a tree. [Music] Okay, we’ve made it tonight. I can see trees. I’m a bit excited. Keep me away from the feelings of people. Okay, we’re heading for the deer park, I think. Although, I’m quite hungry. Me, too. Yeah, I think we might need to eat. Yeah. Thank you. [Music] Oh yeah, watch my turn. Are you rocking? Are you [Music] getting my bag? I’ve given you enough. My goodness. [Music] [Music] Push down. Triple. I put a lip [Music] [Music] [Music] Oh, these deer are so precious. a nod to you for the food, but there are a lot of people here. A lot. And I I’m not sure how good this is for the deer to be really honest, but I suppose they’ve been here for a long time and they’re probably used to all the people and they get a little bit of a feed as well. So yeah, you find that the specific biscuits to give them. So yeah, but they’re adorable. They’re really placid placid creatures. [Music] [Music] It’s making me come back and get it. [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] team. [Music] So, we’ve come to Tawaji. Hope I’m saying that right. Uh, temple. And there’s a big Buddha statue in here. I believe it’s a Buddha. What’s the Buddha Hall? Yeah, the the great water hole with that. Yeah. Yeah. So, yes, let’s go and check it out. The like can’t quite grasp the magnitude of the size of this thing. It’s it’s unbelievable. And it is uh 159.89 ft tall. Oh, 159. And the depth of it is 165.61 ft. There you go. Yeah. [Music] [Music] [Music] Oh my god. Taii Temple is one of Japan’s most famous temples. Constructed in 752 as the head Buddhist temple of Japan, it has held the title of the world’s largest wooden building despite it now being only 2/3 of its original size. Inside is one of Japan’s largest Buddhist statues at 15 m tall representing Varakana with two statues of Bodhisattvas either side. [Music] Oh, heat. [Music] I can’t explain the awe of being much this massive statue. It brings a sense of peace and they’ve got a lot of incense in the air to sort of cleanse the energy. It’s it’s despite all these people being around, there’s something about this statue you just can’t stop looking at. Well, that cost us $8 each to go in and worth a million. Yeah, well worth it. It was amazing. [Music] I’m a walk. [Music] So, we’ve come to the Gillon um district, I suppose, is what you call it. We’re in search of geishes. But we’ve come down this little alleyway. It’s kind of what I anticipate looks like being told to go inside uh old what old Japan would have looked like. It’s really sweet. Haven’t seen any gishes yet, but yeah, this is kind of what I came to Japan [Music] for. [Music] [Applause] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] Oh yeah. Heat. [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. Heat. [Music] We are on a search for Mochi. We have not found one place that does yet. Okay, we’re going right. I’m trying to follow the maps right now and it we haven’t been down this path yet. So hopeful could be here. Well, this is it. Yes. So, I saw someone on TikTok had this strawberry mochi and it looked amazing. It looked delicious. I had a look at it just before. So, fingers crossed they’re going to find it. We’re going to find it. We’ll put our dealers out. We’ll see you in the next clip when we have it here. Come over there on the next. Oh my god. They got Oh my god. No, it’s like a bean. What did we find? We found them. They look absolutely delicious. They’re chocolate ones. And then we also got these sweet potato things. Yeah, I saw someone on Tik Tok ate the sweet potato thing. So, I’m just going to give that a little bit of a swirl first. [Music] Oh, it’s very crunchy. Salty. Going to try this. Got enough hands. Yeah. Oh my goodness. The texture. I don’t know how I feel about the texture, but how am I going to bite? Cheers. I don’t It’s very chewy. I’m going to get a hair in one. That’s actually really good. And it’s gluten-free. Have got it in my face. You got strawberry in your tooth. Nice. I need a like that’s good with the chocolate. Mhm. Mhm.

We are finally off exploring Japan’s food, culture and hidden gems! You can’t miss this vlog if you are thinking about heading to Japan, we go from living van life in our peaceful Australian bush, to planes, trains and LOTS of people. In this video we explore Kyoto’s Nishiki markets and Gion district, as well as Nara’s deer park, tea gardens and Todaiji Temple/Buddha statue.

I have to admit we were a bit shell shocked by the amount of people in Japan, and I am not used to taking public transport so all of that overwhelmed me a bit. But the cultural experiences I had made up for it, there is so much beauty and history to be found in Japan.

  3. When I went to Japan for the first time in 2023 and I went via Cairns. I slept outside at the airport, it was an interesting experience to start my 4300 kilometer train trip in Japan ! We you go you'll always want to go back, since the country and culture is like entering through a door only to find a thousand more to open and explore.
