A Night at the Museum in Naoshima – exploring empty museums & beautiful architecture [Part 2]
Kayli’s grandparents have a photo in this exact spot. The original pumpkin washed away in a typhoon in 2021. Kusama remade the sculpture and it was replaced in 2022. Taking the Benesse shuttle past our hotel to Chichu Art Museum. After you check in, they lead you through a garden to the entrance gate. Cameras are only allowed at the entrance, not inside the museum. Ando’s architecture is incredible to witness. The museum is built almost entirely underground out of concrete. There’s a beautiful view of the sea outside of the museum cafe This museum was definitely worth visiting! We hopped back on the Benesse shuttle to the Benesse House Museum. This cat was ready to board the bus as well! uh-oh Neko-chan is on the bus Hello, Neko-chan! I guess the cat will be driving the bus lol 5 minutes until we depart Neko-chan is still here “sayonara!” Bye, Neko-chan! This museum is also a hotel we will be staying in the “park” building but they are most well known for the “Oval” which is only accessible by people staying in that building. Let’s go inside! This is the first exhibit you are greeted with when you walk inside. Tadao Ando designed this musuem as well. It’s so peaceful out here We came during low season in the winter and we were the only ones here! The hill by the museum was a perfect place to watch the sunset. You can also see the Yellow Pumpkin from up here! We walked down the hill to the Benesse House Park Hotel. Checking out the gift shop before we go to dinner. We made a reservation at the Terrace Restaurant for dinner. Started off with some non-alcoholic wine. cheers! local olive oil their fresh bread was sooo good! We both opted for the fish entree Overall, pretty good meal but kind of pricey. We still haven’t checked into our hotel room yet so the staff is escorting us from the restaurant to the hotel. He leads us through the Hiroshi Sugimoto Gallery. So we just checked in. We’re staying at the Benesse House Park. The level of service here? Unmatched. They gave us some coffee oh this is like their own coffee drip coffee and Ogawa sugars Wow, I love Ogawa Complimentary waters I love how hotels in Japan just give you everything you need like you don’t need to bring anything. little cups, so cute wow oh this is Noritake china oh “use this bowl for your teapack” wow Okay, they have a mini bar they said this is not complimentary, but still very thoughtful. This design is so cool and then over here we have… Everything is just like so intentionally designed. In here is a toilet room. Of course, you gotta get the Toto washlet wet room, bathtub pretty standard everything you need we have some robes yeah show us the closet it slides open just hung our jackets up and there’s some slippers down here. and then, here’s the room! the light is beautiful woah wow they also give you pajamas Folded perfectly and laundry bags. They also have artwork. So we got off the ferry this morning and had all our bags with us. But they have a bus that picks you up from the ferry. They time it perfectly with every ferry that comes in and they basically took our bags and brought them to our hotel room. And we just had dinner at the Terrace restaurant which is right out there. And afterwards we still hadn’t even checked into the hotel yet they literally escorted us through the Hiroshi Sugimoto Gallery to our room. So nice! so we have our own private balcony beautiful big glass door! It’s kind of cold, but I’m excited for the morning. So we’re staying at the Benesse Park Hotel and it’s actually in the same building as the Hiroshi Sugimoto Gallery. so we have access to the museum until 11pm tonight It’s giving Night at the Musuem! It actually looks really beautiful at night with like a lot of light incorporation into the art. So we’re just going to freshen up a little bit and then go check out the museum and explore. It’s like there’s literally nobody in there. So this has been really cool so far. Come down the stairs of the hotel We’re in the gallery. There is a miniature model of his “Go’o Shrine” which is part of the Art House Project here on Naoshima. The lounge is open to guests as a bar in the evening. They also have a tea service here in the daytime. Outside is Sugimoto’s Glass Tea House “Mondrian” I’m really excited to see this in the daytime tomorrow morning. Time to get some rest! Such a peaceful view to wake up to. AKINYEMI went on an early morning run up the hill. Did you see that hill over there? I was there. It’s like It’s like 16% incline over there. Higher than your treadmill. Going uphill it’s so hard. Oh man, my legs are cooked. Walking around & viewing the outdoor artwork. That’s where we ate. That’s the Terrace Restaurant. Checking out the pumpkin one last time! Ta-da! Our hotel room is up there! The water sounds were so calming. Stopping by the lounge for a coffee. We lost track of time and almost missed our ferry to Teshima! We’re taking the smaller passenger boat to Teshima’s Ieura Port. Can’t wait to bring you along to Teshima with us!
Spend the day with us in Naoshima, one of the Art Islands in Japan. We visited Kusama’s Yellow Pumpkin, Chichu Art Museum, Benesse House Museum, Hiroshi Sugimoto Gallery: Time Corridors, and stayed overnight at the Benesse Museum Hotel before hopping on a boat to nearby island, Teshima.
