醒井宿・中山道の旅|清流の地蔵川の桜と梅花藻【春の滋賀旅行】
Hello, this is kapi from kapi trip. This time, we will take a walk in Samegai post town in Shiga Prefecture. Samegai flourished as the 61st post town on the Nakasendo Highway. Water from the Isame no Shimizu flows through the center of the town. In spring, the rows of cherry trees along the river are very beautiful. The river water is clear and calm. It is said that the water saved Yamatotakeru no Mikoto’s life. People in the town have been using this water for domestic use. Hariyo, a precious fish that lives only in spring-fed areas, inhabits this area. This is a water crowfoot blooming in the river. This precious flower grows only in clear streams, and its small white flowers are at their best in summer. We have come to the eastern end of post town. An illustrated map of the Nakasendo Highway in the Edo period is on display. Walk along the Nakasendo Road from east to west. Today, it still retains the appearance of the post town it once was. A shrine is now visible on the left. This is Kamo Shrine, which enshrines the deity Wakeikazuchi no Mikoto. Let’s climb the stone steps leading up to the hall of worship. It used to be located in an even higher location, but with the construction of the Meishin Expressway, it was moved to this location in 1961. The date the shrine was founded is unknown. From the shrine grounds, one could look out over the post town. In spring, beautiful rows of cherry trees can be seen. Leaving Kamo Shrine behind, we walked along the street again. This is Kiyoji Soy Sauce Shop. They are famous for their Yamaki soy sauce made from clear water. Walking further along the street, we came to Toiyaba. Wholesale yards were facilities used during the Edo period to provide laborers and horses to feudal lords and officials, and to transship goods. Part of the house that used to be Toiyaba is now open to the public as a museum. It is said that a fully existing toiyaba is rare in the whole country. It is Juo-sui, which was opened by Jozo, a monk of the Heian period. It springs from the middle of the Jizo River. This is Saigyo-sui, opened by the Heian-period monk Chuzan. The three waters of Samegai, mentioned in the “Omi Meisho Zue”, refer to Isame no Shimizu, Juo-sui, and Saigyo-sui. This is the former Post Office building, which was used as a post office until 1973. It was built in 1915, and Vories, an American architect, was involved in its design. It is now used as a museum to tell the history of Samegai. We took a spring stroll in the Samegai post town in Shiga Prefecture. Thank you for watching.
Samegai-shuku in Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture, is a prosperous post town on the 61st Nakasendo Road. The Jizo River, whose headwaters are the “Iame-no-Shimizu”, flows through the center of the town. This water has been used for daily life. It is also a habitat for the precious fish, hariyo. In summer, many tourists come to see the small white flowers of water crowfoot. When we visited, the rows of cherry trees along the river were so beautiful that we could see only a few plum blossom algae flowers in bloom.
Walking along the Nakasendo roadway, you can see how the elegant townscape remains. From the Kamo Shrine at the end of the stone steps, we could see the townscape of Samegai-shuku. It was a lovely post town with many other sights to see, including an Edo period Toiyaba and a Vories-built old post office building.
