初めての北海道札幌・小樽探検!

初めての北海道札幌・小樽探検!

Okay, here we go. Here we go. Let’s go. Let’s go. So, this right here is the one I’m most excited for. It’s the deer meat and the seasonal. That’s actually really dark. Hopefully, it’s not too gy, but we’re going to put on the grill and find out. This is Jay Gio. So smooth. Higher quality sake is meant to be drank cold and milder, lower quality sake is meant to be drank hot. I’ve been drinking hot my whole life and I appreciate that, but I’m learning something new. I spent one month in the historic and beautiful country of Japan with a little bit of that time spent discovering parts unknown to me in the northern islands of Hokkaido. Join me in this video as we make our way to the iconic and often underrated city of Saporro and explore this winter wonderland and its nearby attractions in the north that is famously known for its beer and delicious food. Wow. Feels like I’m kind of walking in the middle of New York City. Oo, so lively. So [Music] festive. Okay, so right now we are at the Saporro Beer Garden and um we’re going to check out the museum. Hopefully get to sample some great beers. Not sure if you can tell, it’s snowfall again, so it’s going to be nice drinking ice cold beer in this type of setting. Right now, we’re making our way into the beer museum first. And I believe we have to pay for entrance tickets. Okay, so they are fully booked out of the premium tours today, which is a paid admission. And they have the free tour that you can self-guide yourself. The main difference is the premium tour includes a guide in Japanese, and then you get some free tastings, but the free tour, you obviously don’t get the guide, but then you can also do tastings out of pocket. So, which is what we’re going to do. It’s just fine for [Music] us. You got this big beard drum right behind me. Apparently, this whole factory is about 100 years [Music] old. Very neat. So, these are the labels of the various beer batches that they created for the last 100 plus years. All I know is just what I usually drink is or Saporro Classic. Personally, one of my favorite Japanese beers. So, we are going for the two sets. An apple juice and some snacks to go with our beers. The set actually comes with three different types of beers. So, you get a little bit of [Music] everything. Okay, so we got our two sets. Chigi and I each got one. I’m pretty excited about this. I’ve been drinking a lot of the Saporo Classic as I’ve been here on this trip. I have not had the Black Label one. What I’m most excited about is the original Kaiakushi beer, which is the original recipe from a brewery started back in the late 1800s. The Black Label, which is apparently the bestselling one since 1977, it says, is um pretty mild in taste. It’s actually refreshing though. Done with the first one. Moving on to the next classic. This one’s really good. Yeah. Good. Hakushi beer. The original recipe from late 1800s. Supposed to be a little bit hoppy. I can pull some water. Yeah. More flavor. It’s good. But personally, I like the classic more. Oh man. I’m not sure if it’s on stomach, but one flight of three beers is make me a little bit buzz. You’re in Saporro. This is one thing I highly recommend. It’s just a great experience to learn a little bit about the history of this brewing company from its inception in 1800s up until now. And for me, living in the States, whenever Japanese beer comes to mind, I always tend to lean towards Saporro. I I do like a good asaki black, but Saporro is my thing. So, uh, coming here has been a little kid at a candy shop experience for [Music] me. So, we are back in the heart of Saporro, a very lively area that reminds me a lot of Tokyo. Uh we’re actually going to Ramen Alley to grab ramen from one of the famous stops out there. So we’re walking into the heart of the Ramen Alley right now and there’s a long queue of people and see where we can get seated. There’s a line everywhere. I’m sure some are better than others, but we’re going to find the one with the shortest line and uh try to get seated here. All right, so we decided on a spot. We’re going to wait in the one with the second longest line is called Teshi Kaga. And there’s actually two lines. First line that we’re standing in is for without reservations. There’s another line up front towards uh the other side. All right, we’re getting closer to the entrance. We move from the common air line to the priority line. Okay, here we go. Here we go. Let’s go. Let’s go. [Music] We ordered a couple of bowls of the chashu ramen and all of the ingredients used by the chef came together perfectly, offering an explosive and smoky taste of flavor in every sip and bite. The noodles were springy and the gigantic strips of pork belly we added were a perfect addition to fulfill our need of meat when having this delicious staple in Japanese cuisine. [Music] Uh we are making our way to the Saporro Munich Christmas market. Supposedly some very beautiful light setups there. So we’re heading there now. So they basically just set up shop in the middle of the square over here. There’s plenty of vendors. Wo. There’s plenty of vendors that are either selling uh Christmas ornaments, knickknacks, small bites. They have beer and uh smells like churros. Smells like cinnamon. All right. 500 yen for this trail right here at the Christmas market. Not bad. Right now, we just made our way from the Saporro station by tram to one of my most exciting list of items on the itinerary to the Royce Chocolate Factory. It’s about 11 stops away from the city center. And uh if you’ve never had this chocolate before, it literally is like, in my opinion, hands down the best on the planet. The first thing when you walk into this chocolate factory is um you have a bunch of stuff you can buy before you get into the heart of the area. We um are craving something refreshing. So they have a soft serve station that you can buy some fresh rice ice cream which I’ve never had before. So we’re going to try that out as well. [Music] Not a little bit. M like whether you’re an adult or a kid, if you love this chocolate, if you ever had it before, I mean, you know what I’m talking about. If you’ve never had it before, you got to try it. And it might inspire you to come check this factory out. Come visit Japan, specifically in Mokaido. Admission cost is 1,200 yen per adult. Kids older than three are about 500 yen. So, if your child is under three, then it’s free of entry. Right as you make your way into the entrance, you can see workers preparing the different types of chocolate recipes, I guess. And we have robotic arms, like just putting it all together. It’s really [Music] neat. I know I just like to eat it, but it’s actually great coming here because more of like a museum type experience where you can learn about the entire life cycle for how they harvest the cocoa beans from Colombia, ship back here to Japan to process it in the factory. This is like the real life Willy Wonka and the Chakaco factory in Japan. So all these rappers on the wall that are framed. Apparently some doctor traveled the world to five 55 different countries and he collected the rappers of all the chocolates he’s eaten during his travels and they framed it all up. That’s crazy. This whole corridor has the rappers all framed up individually. [Music] All right. So, right now we are on our way to Otaro from Saporo. It’s about a 30 to 40m minute train ride and we’re just doing a day trip out there to do some sightseeing. Supposedly very beautiful at night for the nightlights and there’s a museum out there and there’s also a sake distillery that I’m going to try to check out as well. So, we’re just waiting for the train. [Music] This place is crowded. So, we are at the San Kaku Market here in Otaru. And it’s just a little corridor. So many different vendors. It’s quite jam-packed with people. A lot of seafood for sale. [Music] All right. That’s a pretty cool market, but we actually chose not to eat here. We felt it was a little bit pricey. Um, on average, one king crab is about two kilos, and they charge about 13,000 yen per kilo. So, that comes out to about 200 bucks for a whole crab. But if you want the whole experience where you can pick out your own crab and take a picture with it and carry it, you know, this is the place to do it. Right now, we’re going to go find a coffee shop and hit up a fried chicken joint in a bit. So, Otadu is just, like I said, about 40 minutes away from Saporo. A lot of people come out here for day trips at Pierce, including us. It’s a old port town and there’s a canal where there’s like a you know boat that can take you along the canal for a cruise. We’re just trying to get something warm, can rest our legs a little bit and uh this coffee house is called Coffee House Chef. So, we’re going to go in and get a couple drinks and just relax. [Music] That is a nicely crafted cup of brew. The guy back there puts a lot of effort into doing the pour over. [Music] Okay, so the fried chicken place that we’re waiting at right now is called Naruto. And it’s actually a nice little treat. I know we’re in Hokkaido, but we’ve eaten so much seafood that sad to say, we’re kind of sick of it. So, we need something to change up the diet. And uh yeah, I’m craving some awesome fried chicken. Supposedly, this place is really good. We just put our name in. We’re waiting in the waiting room to stay warm. All right, so we just got seated and um this place is pretty jam-packed with people. Probably all like not craving seafood as well. So, what we uh started off is just some Saporro Classic beer and we ordered a couple of uh sets. So, we went with the half chicken, the little nuggets, and then a side of chicken wings as well. Everything was very good. We’ll wait and see to find out. So, right now, we’re just sipping on the beer waiting for the food. So, they just brought us our first set, which is the half chicken, and it’s like there’s no batter on it. They just deep fry in the skin. It’s piping hot. It sounds very crispy. So, we’re going to dig right in. [Music] M. It’s just like lightly salted. Good. That skin is like so crispy and fresh. So, the sets actually come with rice, some miso soup, and then they give you a little bit of a side of tofu with bonito flake on it. Um, we’re really just here for the chicken, but it’s nice to have the size as well. Everything looks very good, but they don’t use a batter. It’s just deep fried skin, and they like drizzle it with some salt, MSG or something, cuz it tastes like there’s MSG on there. M. So juicy and tender. And the marinade. The marinade is not only on the outside. It’s like into the meat as well. Oh [Music] yeah. So that was really good. Nice little treat. Uh right now on a full stomach after that beer, we’re going to go do some sake tasting at a place called Tanaka Brewing Company. It’ll be my first time doing that. I love sake. I don’t know a whole lot about what’s great and what’s not great sake. I just enjoy the taste. I can kind of tell what’s good, what’s not, but uh yeah, maybe we’ll learn a thing or two at this brewing company. [Music] Squeezing. pieces gi [Music] aromatic. So smooth. So many different flavor profiles. So apparently higher quality sake is meant to be drank cold and milder, lower quality sake is meant to be drank hot. I’ve been drinking hot my whole life and I appreciate that, but I’m learning something new. [Music] That one’s sweet. Wow, that’s so good. I like that one. So, this was very educational. Uh, we are buying two sake bottles back. I actually really like this one because it’s got a sweetness flavor. You can taste a yuzu in it. It’s more like a dessert sake. And then, um, the highest quality sake that we’re going to buy and take back with us to California if we can clear out the weight in our luggage is this one right here. So, what I learned today about sake, there’s different levels of uh, rice quality, I guess, that they use. And so they have the lowest quality which is junmai and then the middle quality is junai gjo. Junai gjo is medium. Junaijo. Yeah. And then the highest quality is junai gjo. And so you know depending on the quality of the sake is made from those specific types of rice sources. So very educational. So this sake brewery is has a long history. It’s the only one in Otaru Hanaka sake brewing company. And it has a history about 125 years is what I’ve been told. This banner up here is original from the original store. 125 years ago, 1899. Scattered throughout this brewery shop, there are remnants or relics of stuff from the original store, including tanks, the original tanks that they stored the sake in back in the day. Now they’re using it for shelves to hold the bottles of stuff you can buy. But those are the original tanks. Wow. So there was really sake empty bottle empty. All right. So right here is actually a scenic point the Otago canal and right now it’s there’s some lights but I think in February for like 10 days in February there’s a light festival that’s supposed to be very beautiful. Unfortunately we weren’t able to make it. That’s quite nice. So we’re taking a couple shots and uh yeah here we are. [Music] I don’t know how this makes sense, but it is freezing cold. And we came across the Japanese matcha sweet shop and uh decided to do this light matcha ice cream. They have a really dark one which I’ve had before in Kyoto. It’s too intense. So, we went with the light one. No worry about this melting right now cuz it’s cold outside. So, you can taste that matcha. That’s the authentic matcha ice cream. So, the street I’m walking in right now, I believe, is called Sakai Machi Main Street, and it’s just lined with bunch of food vendors and shops as usual. Quite lively still. It’s actually only about 5:00 p.m., but the sun’s set here quick. We wrapped up our day trip to Otaru by visiting the Otaru Music Box, Museum, and Shop. This grand historical building is over 100 years old and contains one of the largest assortment of music boxes and goods scattered on every floor for you to admire or purchase as a keepsake in your trip here to Otaru. This next spot on my list is for those who can appreciate history and culture and are looking to venture out a bit further from the heart of the city. The National Inu Museum and Park, often referred to as Upui, is located about 1 hour from Saporo in the city of Shiraoy. It is a great place where one can learn more in depth about the history and culture of the indigenous Anu people in the northern region of the Japanese archipelago. The museum is situated along a haven of natural beauty, and strolling through its various sites and exhibits can easily be an all-day event. Admission fees were 1,200 yen per adult and children under the age of 15 are free. You can get to the museum by limited express train via the JR Saporro [Music] station. We’re hungry. So before we make our way to Saporro, we actually stopped by this Yakiu shop. And it’s an interesting place cuz the name of the place is called Hitsuji No Aito. I believe the translation is a sheep hideout. And when you walk in, it’s interesting because the theme is kind of like Pirates of the Caribbean theme. Um, and they serve a variety of good looking meats and we actually get to order some deer as well, which I’m pretty excited about. I’ve never had deer in a yaki niku setting. So, it’s going to be very interesting. [Music] Here’s a little special piece that we just grilled. The flame is so high. They actually gave us ice cubes to dash the fire on the lowest setting. The beef itself doesn’t have a whole lot of marinade if any. They give you a special like Hanzu soy sauce where you dip the naturally very [Music] tender. This one right here is the A5 W special as well. You can see all that marbling. Very, very tasty. These probably be very savory. If I weigh you is like dripping in fat. I drenched that piece and a lot of that sauce. Really [Music] good. This is that piece of the tongue. It comes lightly marinated in some black pepper. M. Little bit bouncy. It’s quite tender actually. I think I actually like that one better than 85 Wu. So, this right here is the one I’m most excited for, even though it may not be the best. It’s the deer meat, and it’s seasonal. So, that’s actually really dark. Hopefully, it’s not too gy, but we’re going to put on the grill and find out. Oh, that looks good, though. All right, so this is my first piece of the deer meat. We overcooked it a little bit, but I’m not sure how to cook this proper, but Jakey said it’s not gy, a little bit chewy, but yeah, we’re going to find out. [Music] So, for me, no giness at all. I agree with that. But for me, it’s not chewy. I mean, it’s definitely a little bit more taste a little bit more drama, so the bite into, but it’s actually really good. I’m not sure if that sauce I dipped it in just kind of overpowered the natural flavor of the deer meat, but I actually like it. All right, so this piece here, we undercooked it a little bit to see if it’s going to be less rubbery. Oh, yeah. Big time. Okay. Yeah. So we took Yeah, I was just scared because, you know, I mean, deer is not a predator, so apparently you don’t need to cook it like super high temp to be well done like you would with like bear meat or something. But we cooked that to just like medium. Super tender, really tasty. I didn’t dip it in any of that extra sauce. The natural marinade that they put on it when they serve it to you is actually really good. Okay. Yeah. Good. Sheep hideout. If you like Pirates of the Caribbean, if you’re looking for Yaki Niku, it’s a relatively quiet town. But if you’re paying a visit to that National Museum of Au people, which I highly recommend, u make it an all day thing if you can. Just there’s a lot of exhibits and shows to see, and you’re hungry afterwards. Save your appetite to come here. This place is actually really, really good. The meat, high quality, and try the deer meat. I actually really enjoy that. [Music] So right now we are back in Sephoro City and uh one of the things we have not had that’s very popular in the city supposedly is soup curry and so there’s multiple establishments scattered throughout the city that you can choose from and the place that we came to is called piccante suk curry. They have a variety of different curries that you can order. They have a curry of the day. So we went with a beef tendon stew along with the special which is a variety of of other things along with some side toppings. So quite excited to try this out. Just waiting for the food. All right, these are firestone dishes. We’re going to dig right in. First things first, going to try some of the curd broth itself. This is the rich broth itself. Like a layer of oil on top of it. Looks very [Music] flavorful. Piping hot. Very very flavorful. All right, so I just filled up my bowl of rice with some of this beef tendon. Drizzle some of that sauce on. M. Very generous. Oh, it’s good. A beef stew that’s kind of spicy. And every dish comes with a variety of vegetables. Right here is actually a little piece of a quail egg. My protein. My most favorite is just a beef tendon stew and that broth is like the richest part about it. So, this is a piece of chicken. And it actually looks like a fish fillet that came out of the special curry that we ordered. Broth is the same. Vegetables are the same. Main difference is this comes with the chicken meat instead of the beef stew. On top of that, also comes with like a deep fried tempura egg that’s soft boiled. So that’s going to be interesting as well. That’s good. Very tender. Here’s that soft boiled egg. We drizzle some of that curry sauce on it. Yeah. M. That’s a little bit more hardboiled than softboiled, but it works. Good. [Music] Okay, so soup curry. First time for us. I really enjoyed that. Genuinely enjoyed it. Man, that soup has a slight curry flavor. If you guys know a place outside of Hokkaido that we can find this in the broader Japan area, we’re going to be in Osaka. We’re going to be in Tokyo. Make a comment down below. Let us know or let other viewers know where they can find this delicious dish outside of its place of origin.
