🏞️ The Enchanting Mountain Cherries of Rikugo – “The Yoshino of the East”
It is said that the wild mountain cherry trees of Rikugo were scattered and sown by little birds pecking at the hillsides—giving rise to a breathtaking spring landscape known as Sakura Senkyo (The Cherry Blossom Fairy Gorge). Located in Ikeda Town, Nagano Prefecture, this area is often called “Yoshino in the West, Rikugo in the East”, a nod to the iconic cherry blossoms of Mount Yoshino.

🌸 What Makes Rikugo’s Mountain Cherry Blossoms So Special

A Harmony with Nature
Unlike neatly arranged rows of cherry trees, these wild mountain cherries bloom naturally across the slopes. Their soft pink petals blend with the fresh green of budding trees and the lingering snowcaps of the Northern Alps, creating a rich, multi-layered visual experience.

Scenery with Elevation and Depth
Because the blossoms stretch across hilly terrain, visitors can admire them both from below, looking up, and from above, looking down. The view transforms depending on the angle, offering new perspectives with every step.

The Mythical Aura of “Sakura Senkyo”
The name Sakura Senkyo, meaning “cherry blossom fairy gorge,” evokes a tranquil, almost mystical world. Untouched by heavy tourism, the area retains the serene atmosphere of a hidden sanctuary.

Best Time to Visit: Mid to Late April
These cherry trees bloom a little later than the common Somei Yoshino variety. As a result, they reach full bloom after most of Japan’s cherry blossom season has ended—making it a quiet, lesser-known gem for sakura lovers.

When viewed from above, the hills appear blanketed in pink, and from certain angles, the snowy peaks of the Northern Alps come into full view, adding to the majesty of this unforgettable springtime scene.
