冬の当丸峠 道道998号線 Toumaru Pass Route 998 in Winter
当丸峠は北海道の積丹半島東岸の古平町から西岸の神恵内村を結ぶ道道998号線の中間地点(古平町、神恵内村境界付近）にある。神恵内村に入って国道229号線を南下すると泊原子力発電所があり、ここで事故が発生した場合この道道998号線が避難道路の役割を果たす事になっている。その為、特に冬期間積雪の多い当丸峠頂上付近ではスノーシェルターが整備されているが雪崩や吹雪による通行止めが他の路線よりも多い。
Tomaru Pass is located at the midpoint (near the border between Furubira and Kamoenai) of Prefectural Route 998, which connects Furubira Town on the east coast of Hokkaido’s Shakotan Peninsula to Kamoenai Village on the west coast. Once you enter Kamoenai Village, head south on National Route 229 to reach the Tomari Nuclear Power Plant. In the event of an accident at the Tomari Nuclear Power Plant, Prefectural Route 998 is meant to serve as an evacuation route. For this reason, snow shelters have been constructed near the top of Tomaru Pass, where there is a lot of snowfall, especially in the winter, but road closures due to avalanches and blizzards are more frequent than on other routes.
