St Petersburg’s Most Upscale District of the Imperial Era. THE PETROGRAD SIDE

Walking through the Petrograd Side (Petrogradskaya Side, Petrogradsky District, Petrogradsky Island) – one of just four districts recognized as part of St. Petersburg’s UNESCO-listed historic center. While the city is famous for its imperial baroque and classical architecture, this area offers a unique glimpse into its early 20th-century golden age.

Though development here began with the city’s founding in 1703, the Petrograd Side truly came into its own during the 1900-1910s. As Russia’s last architectural flourish before the Revolution, the district became a showcase for Art Nouveau mansions and avant-garde tenements – instantly making it the most upscale and modern neighborhood of pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg. The district became a prestigious residential area for the middle class and artistic elite.

A century later, the Petrogradskaya Side retains its exclusive status. Between restored Art Nouveau landmarks, you’ll discover contemporary luxury developments – proving this remains the address of choice for those who value both history and modernity.

The route passes such an interesting places as Petrovskaya Embankment of Neva River, Troitskaya (Trinity) Square, Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt (Stone Island Avenue), “Lenfilm” movie studio, Stalinist Neoclassical residential building with the Museum-apartment of Sergey Kirov, Andrey Petrov Square, Leo Tolstoy Square, The House with Towers, “Lensoviet” Palace of Culture, The Lensovet Palace of Culture, Bolshoy Prospekt Petrogradskoy Storony (Grand Avenue of Petrograd Side), Lenin Square and more.

St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia, founded in 1703 by Emperor Peter The Great (aka Peter I). It was a capital city of Russian Empire in the period from 1712 to 1918.

In the Soviet days, St Petersburg was renamed to Leningrad.

St Petersburg is located 680 km northwest of Moscow.

Here on the “All of Russia” channel, I explore places not just inside but also travel all over Russia outside Moscow.

  3. hi Sergei, great to see you out and about on such a beautiful day, in your lovely city. all the best from canada❤

  4. Yes, it would be easier to live / to have peace agreement, for President Trump and President Putin to reestablish diplomatic and economic ties, if they tuned into a walk and historical talk from just one of Baklykov presentación of the beauty of Russia both physically and History of it great culture as evidence by the words of Great Authors.
But , I enjoy this podcast , perhaps selfishly, just relaxing with my wife.
If the drives are rubies, these walks and talks are Diamonds.
    Thanks

  6. 😢😅 Some play the really loud "crappy" music here in the U.S., also! I agree wth you Sergey, that they should close their windows & doors! Why do they push their awful music on those that just don't want to hear it, aye?? Oh well, we just live & let live! 🤣

  7. Well, it's 2am in the early morning and I need some sleep! Thanks again for the great 'walk & talk'! It has been very enjoyable and fun! Byeeee for now! Zzzzz 😴
