花川は石狩市民の役8割が住んでいるそうで、花川南地区は宅地開発業者により昭和40（1965）年9月から分譲が開始され『新札幌団地』と呼ばれていたらしく。昭和51（1976）年には、花川北地区の住宅団地を合わせ『花川』と命名されたそう。それまでの石狩市の人口は、役9,000人ほどで推移していたらしく、農業関連に従事する人たちが主体でしたがこの花川の開発によって人口が急増、石狩湾新港開発と共に、後の『町』から『市』制施行の大きな要因になったそうです。

Apparently, about 80% of Ishikari’s citizens live in Hanakawa, and the Hanakawa Minami area was called the “Shin-Sapporo Housing Complex” when land development began in September 1965. In 1976, the housing complex in the Hanakawa Kita area was combined and named “Hanakawa.” Until then, the population of Ishikari City was about 9,000 people, mostly people engaged in agriculture, but the development of Hanakawa caused a rapid population increase, and together with the development of the Ishikari Bay New Port, this was a major factor in the city’s subsequent transformation from a “town” to a “city.”
