In 1983 , Saburo Island was connected to Honshu by land reclamation.
The reclaimed land is used for a wide range of regional development activities, including commerce, industry, education, and sports.
The cherry blossoms “Sakura” on Saburojima are in full bloom.
Japanese people look forward to cherry blossom “sakura” viewing every year.
People get together and enjoy a picnic, chatting under the cherry blossom trees while having a packed lunch and sometimes alcohol.
Cherry blossom “Sakura” viewing across Japan has been around since the Edo period. It’s one of the rare traditions we Japanese still keep.

We feel Spring is coming by knowing that sakura is blooming.
Sakura usually blooms from late March to April, and this is a special time for many Japanese who graduate from school and start a new life.

It’s also thought to have links to Bushido “Samurai code of chivalry”.

私たちは桜の開花を知ることで、春の訪れを実感します。
桜の開花は通常3月下旬から4月にかけてで、この時期は多くの日本人が学校を卒業したり新しい生活を始める特別なときです。
桜はわずか1週間しか咲かないので、人生は美しく短いということを思わせます。
