Oiso Sagicho
Fire Festival
Important intangible folk cultural property
Oiso Sagicho is a fire festival for the Seenokamisan (roadside god), also known as Seeto Baret or Dondoyaki, and is designated as an Important intangible folk cultural property.
The origin of the festival is that long ago, a god of misfortune called Mehitotsu Kozo was going around writing down the deeds of the villagers in a notebook in this area, but when dawn broke, he hurriedly handed the notebook over to Seenokamisan and left without doing anything. Seenokamisan, who had been entrusted with the notebook, was at a loss and burned it along with his house. This is said to be the beginning of Seeto Baret (Sagicho).
On the day of the festival, the bamboo poles and temporary houses in various places in the town are cleared away, and the collected decorations and lucky charms are carried to the beach to create nine large cone-shaped sites. When the sun sets, fires are lit at the nine sites, and it is said that if you roast and eat rice dumplings over this fire, you will not catch a cold, if the burnt calligraphy flies high into the air, your arms will improve, and if you take home some pine embers and place them on your roof, it will act as a charm to ward off fires.
