Exploring Himeji Castle: Japan’s Hidden Gem & A Walk Through “Princess Road

Thanks to a friend’s recommendation, I had the chance to visit Himeji Castle and its gardens, and it has quickly become one of the most stunning castles I’ve seen in Japan. The beauty of the place truly lives up to its reputation. As the first historical castle to be registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it’s incredible to think that at one point, it was nearly torn down because it was deemed “non-essential.” I was lucky to have a volunteer guide show me around, someone who generously gave her time to educate visitors about the castle’s history and significance.

Himeji itself means “Princess Road,” and walking through the city really feels like a journey along a path dedicated to womenhood. The street leading from the train station straight to the castle is lined with statues honoring women of all ages. As a woman, it was a truly empowering experience to stroll through the city, feeling valued and celebrated. The atmosphere in and around the castle grounds was peaceful and serene, offering a sense of calm that perfectly complemented the beauty and history surrounding me.
