今回は兵庫県赤穂市を訪れました。
赤穂市は「赤穂義士（しじゅうしちし）」や「忠臣蔵」の舞台として
有名です。「赤穂義士」は、江戸時代「赤穂事件」に関わった47人の 旧赤穂藩士です。
「忠臣蔵」はこの事件を題材にした創作作品で、歌舞伎や人形浄瑠璃、
文楽などの演目になっています。1701年、播磨赤穂藩の藩主浅野内匠頭（あさのたくみのかみ）が
江戸城内で吉良上野介（きらこうずけのすけ）に斬りかかりました。
これが「赤穂事件」の始まりです。その原因には諸説ありますが、一般的には吉良上野介が浅野内匠頭に対し
冷たく接し、侮辱的な態度を取ったことが原因と言われています。この結果、浅野内匠頭は将軍から即日切腹を命じられ、赤穂藩は改易
されました。一方で、吉良上野介にはお咎めなしで不平等ともとれる
裁決でした。このことから、浅野内匠頭の家臣、大石内蔵助以下47人は、主君の仇を
討つため吉良邸に討ち入り、吉良上野介を討ちましたが、その後幕府より
切腹を命ぜられました。以上が赤穂事件の概要です。
This time I visited Ako City in Hyogo Prefecture.
Ako City is famous as the site of the “Ako Gishi (Forty-Seven Ronin)”
and “Chushingura. “Ako Gishi” refers to the 47 former retainers of the Ako domain
who were involved in the “Ako Incident”.
“Chushingura” is a fictional work based on this incident and
has been performed in kabuki, puppet theater, and bunraku. In 1701, Asano Takumi no Kami, the lord of the Ako domain in Harima,
attacked Kira Kozuke no Suke inside Edo Castle.
This was the beginning of the “Ako Incident”. While the exact cause is debated, it is generally believed that
Kira Kozuke no Suke treated Asano Takumi no Kami coldly
and with disrespect. As a result, Asano Takumi no Kami was ordered to commit seppuku(retual suicide)
by the shogun, and the Ako domain was abolished.
On the other hand, Kira Kozuke no Suke was not punished
in what was seen as an unfair decision. Consequently, Asano’s retainer, Oishi Kuranosuke, and the other
46 ronin avenged their lord by attacking Kira’s residence and killing
Kira Kozuke no Suke.
After the attack, all 47 ronin were ordered to commit seppuku by
the shogunate. That concludes the overview of the Ako Incident.
