Yamabushi Fire Walk Saito Goma Ritual
“The Saitou Gomakuyo ritual was held at Hannyaji Temple in Hirao Town, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
Saitou Gomakuyo is a traditional ceremony where ascetic monks, known as Yamabushi, set up a sacred fire altar using firewood during their mountain ascetic practices, praying for the fulfillment of their wishes.
When worshippers throw wooden sticks, on which they have written their prayers and names, into the fire of the altar set up in the center, the flames of wisdom of Fudo Myoo (Acala) rise from the altar, praying for the fulfillment of their wishes, including good fortune and protection against evil.
The Yamabushi walk barefoot over the blazing fire, while general worshippers walk over the safe ashes.
