湛江赤坎區位於廣東省湛江市主城區西北部，東臨麻斜海，南接霞山區，西連遂溪縣，北靠廉江市，地處雷州半島東北端，瀕臨南海，是湛江市的中心城區之一，亦是全市政治、文化、商貿和交通的重要樞紐。歷史方面，赤坎唐代已有漁民聚居，明清因港口貿易興起成為雷州半島北部的商貿集散地，曾為古代「海上絲綢之路」的重要節點；1899年法國強租廣州灣（今湛江）後，赤坎成為法屬行政和商業中心，留下大量法式建築遺跡，1945年抗戰勝利後回歸中國並納入湛江市。經濟以服務業為主導，重點發展現代服務業、電子信息、生物醫藥等產業，擁有金沙灣、世貿等商圈及赤坎科創園等工業園區，交通上臨近湛江港並有多條高速公路穿境。文化特色方面，赤坎老街保存民國騎樓建築，融合嶺南與法式風格，廣州灣法國公使署舊址為全國重點文保單位；飲食以海鮮和粵西風味著稱，如白切雞、炭烤生蠔等，民俗活動保留年例、龍舟賽等傳統。旅遊資源包括赤坎老街、金沙灣濱海休閒區、寸金橋公園及南國熱帶花園。教育與醫療資源集中，擁有湛江第一中學、廣東醫科大學附屬醫院等機構。行政區劃面積約79平方公里，常住人口約35萬，下轄8個街道。赤坎區定位為湛江「一灣兩岸」城市格局核心，正推進舊城改造與新城建設，目標打造「濱海魅力中心城區」及「文旅融合示範區」。

Chikan District is located in the northwest of Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province, bordered by Maxie Sea to the east, Xiashan District to the south, Suixi County to the west, and Lianjiang City to the north. Situated at the northeastern tip of the Leizhou Peninsula and adjacent to the South China Sea, it serves as one of Zhanjiang’s central urban areas and a key hub for politics, culture, commerce, and transportation. Historically, Chikan has been inhabited by fishermen since the Tang Dynasty and flourished as a trade hub during the Ming and Qing Dynasties due to its port, becoming a vital node on the ancient Maritime Silk Road. In 1899, after France leased Guangzhou Bay (now Zhanjiang), Chikan became the administrative and commercial center under French rule, leaving behind numerous colonial-era buildings. It was reintegrated into China in 1945 post-WWII. Economically, the district focuses on service industries, modern services, electronics, and biopharmaceuticals, with major commercial zones like Jinsha Bay and Shimao, alongside industrial parks such as Chikan Innovation Park. Its transportation network benefits from proximity to Zhanjiang Port and highways like the Shenyang-Haikou Expressway. Culturally, Chikan Old Street preserves Republic-era arcade buildings blending Lingnan and French architectural styles, while the Former Site of the French Legation in Guangzhou Bay is a national heritage site. Local cuisine highlights seafood and western Guangdong flavors, including white-cut chicken and grilled oysters, with traditions like Nianli festivals and dragon boat races. Tourist attractions include Chikan Old Street, Jinsha Bay Coastal Leisure Area, Cunjin Bridge Park, and Nanguo Tropical Garden. Education and healthcare resources feature institutions like Zhanjiang No.1 High School and Guangdong Medical University Affiliated Hospital. The district covers 79 km² with a population of approximately 350,000 (2023) and administers 8 subdistricts. Chikan aims to transform into a “coastal charm center” and “cultural-tourism integration zone” under Zhanjiang’s “One Bay, Two Banks” urban development strategy.
