Chawton House Hampshire - Home of Jane Austen's Brother - History and Tour

Chawton House was the home of Jane Austen’s brother, Edward Austen Knight. It’s a fascinating story of how this property has stayed in the Knight family for over 400 years, and how it has such close ties to Jane Austen who visited this property regularly when Edward was in residence. Chawton House is located in the already famous village of Chawton, as it’s where Jane Austen lived in her later life, in a home provided by Edward on the estate.
Learn about the Knight family, tour the house and gardens with us, and see where Jane Austen would have walked and found inspiration for her novels. It’s also here in the peaceful church that her mother and sister both called Cassandra are laid to rest.

  1. Have just watched your Jane Austen trilogy and thank you. I feel like I was there and really enjoyed the visit…

  2. Thanks so much for your kindness and generosity for producing these videos. Due to being in New Zealand, it's impossible to visit my home. Covid is the 21st century curse! Your wonderful videos do justice to your eloquent commentary and camera sensitivity. I am now an avid supporter.😃

  3. Just got you a new subby! This is the third one I’ve watched so far and I’m hooked haha great work!

  4. I really liked the video & hope to visit England one day ..I studied English literature..Austen one of my the favourite authors

  5. You guys are so professional, the photography, camera control. An excellent use of background music and very importantly, a listenable voice. Congratulations and thank you.

  7. I cannot understand how he could not offer lodging to his sister and mother in the House itself and share his good fortune with them.

  8. The pirate flag intrigues me. I'm going to play the vlog again just in case you talked about it and I missed the comment. The house and history is really interesting. Thank you once again. =-) I looked it up – To celebrate the anarchic spirit of female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, who feature in the exhibition, Chawton House will fly the Jolly Roger from the parapets. This was the pirate flag favoured by infamous pirate Jack Rackham, under whose captaincy Bonny and Read sailed.

  9. Love your Channel, and as a huge fan of Jane Austen's I'm loving all these videos. However, I noticed at about 7:34 into the video, Jack Rackham's pirate flag flying from the building! I didn't hear you mention anything about it but am very curious why that would be. 🖤🏴‍☠️

  10. My daughter works there, helping with events and using her art college skills making display exhibits for shows and events.

  11. Was it her beloved Hampshire was it his generosity to put them in a former pub house.. as per other documentary I saw he saw his mother n 2 sisters as a burden…hmm diff perspectives I guess

  12. Thanks for the amazing videos, they’re very enjoyable, entertaining, and educational. Your smooth voice and friendly tone captures the bits of history without taking away any of the visual. Idk how you don’t have much more followers. You’re amazing and your team is very professional and skillful. Wishing you great success!

  14. Jane Austen – a little lady who is in all British hearts – she captured her day, their ways, their feelings & their stories. Some of us have always wanted to be back there with them enjoying the civil ways they cultivated, and hope we do not lose entirely ! Life has become so course in many ways, and we could do ourselves a lot of good in learning from Jane's era. It does not help us to progress to better things unless we first learn to practice decency. Love you Jane & thank you for all you gave us !
