Takeda Castle Ruins – Castle in the Sky on the Sea of Clouds
Takeda Castle Ruins, located in Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, is a beautiful mountain castle ruin, also known as “Machu Picchu in Japan” or “Castle in the Sky. Built on top of the 353-meter-high Mt. Kojo, the castle is surrounded by a sea of clouds from fall to winter, creating a fantastic sight like a castle in the sky.

History and Attractions
Takeda Castle was built in 1441 by Soten Yamana, and later renovated by Hirohide Akamatsu, a subordinate of Hidenaga Hashiba (younger brother of Hideyoshi Toyotomi), as the lord of the castle. The castle was abandoned after the Battle of Sekigahara, but its magnificent stonewalls still remain and tell the story of a mountain castle in the Warring States period. The entire castle ruins are designated as a national historic site, and the well-preserved stonewalls are considered one of the best in Japan.
