JR Hachioji Station, Tokyo, Japan – Hitachi Prototype Bottom-Traction Elevator 八王子駅 開発型 エレベーター

In 1997, JR East and Hitachi worked together to try and develop a new elevator model that could be retrofitted in stations where shaft space is limited and yet suitable for wheelchair use, recognizing that the aging population in Japan is becoming more obvious. The bottom-traction technology appears to be based on the venerable Family Ace series used in small sized installations.

Prototype installations were made at Hachioji and Yotsuya stations. Later on when the actual Station Ace product was launched in 2001 the capacity offered was larger at 9 persons (but not as large as what is standard today).

Technical specifications:
Floors served: 1, 2
Capacity: 4 persons/300kg
Manufacturer : Hitachi Elevator 日立 (jointly developed with JR East 東日本旅客鉄道 共同開発)
Model: Prototype (Custom-made) 開発型 (based on Family Ace ファミリエース)
Year installed: ~1997
History: Original
