Japan tour, Hokkaido trailer
Japan, Hokkaido tour (Trailer) by Mobile Home, 5 – 13 October 2019

Please have a look to see: What to do in Hokkaido? What to see in Hokkaido? or the highligths of Hokkaido.

We have rent a Mobile Home for the first week of our Japan #tour. After landing on Chitose Airport, south-east of #Sapporo, we picked up the Mobile Home. There were two small mobile homes, the homes for the next week for the seven of us.
We intended to make a #roundtrip clockwise on #Hokkaido to see:
Furano,
Daisetsuzan National Park with the Mount Kurodake and the Sounkyo gorge,
Akan National Park with Lake Kusharo, Lake Mashu, Mount Lo and Mount Mashudake,
Shiretoko National Park with the five lakes trail at the Shiretoko Goko Field House,
Rausu Pass with the Rausu Lake and Mount Rausu,
and Kushiro-shitsugen National Park with the wetlands and the Red-crowned Crane.
Only when we had some time left, we would visit the Shikotsu-Toya National Park with Lake Shikotsu and Mount Turamae.
After picking-up the Mobile Home we drove a little to leave the Sapporo – Chitose area to sleep in the quietness of Hokkaido. We agreed very fast to skip Furano. Furano is well known for its flowers. However, October is not the right time to see flowers in blossom. We had already seen flowers in blossom in the Keukenhof in Holland (https://youtu.be/qAPlXb2RiIA )earlier this year. We were in October to enjoy the autumn colors.
So, the second day we went to Sounkyo in the Daisetsuzan National Park. We took the gondola and made a hike to the Mount Kurodake. Unfortunately one of the Mobile Homes did not start anymore. The next day we hiked through the Sounkyo Gorge and spoiled the afternoon to swap the Mobile Home for another.
From Sounkyo we drove in the rain out the Daisetsuzan National Park to the Akan National Park. There was a very nice viewpoint to see Lake Kusharo. Because of the rain and clouds we could only enjoy the pictures in the visitor center. Near Lake Kusharo we visited Mount Lo and the Sumo Museum of the famous Yokozuna Taiho. We went to Lake Mashu and slept at viewpoint one. The next morning we enjoyed the sun rise and hiked to the top of the Mount Mashudake. In the afternoon we drove to next target, Utoro close to the Shiretoko National Park.
The sightseeing with the boat was not possible. Instead of that we hiked to the Furepe Falls and hiked the Shiretoko Forest Trail with a splendid view on the Mount Rausu. After passing for the Bear exam we hiked round two of the five lakes near the Shiretoko Goko Field House. On our way to the Shiretoko Goko Field House we enjoyed of a bear cup playing with a salmon in the Iwaubetsu River. We had some time left to take a shower at the Kamuiwakka Hot Falls, however the water was not warm enough to take that shower. It was not possible to hike to Rausu Lake on the Rausu Pass. After the view on the Russian island Kunashiri we slept in Shibetsu.
The wetlands in the Kushiro-shitsugen National Park are hard to visit. We made a small hike but the view on the wetlands is very limited. We have seen a couple of Red-crowned Cranes walking in the field and flying in the air. It is not the time for the Cranes.
We had time, so we visited the Shikotsu-Toya National Park and hiked on the Mount Turamae.
