KATSUYAMA, Fukui Prefecture: The Old and the New

The religious site known today as “Heisen-ji Hakusan Jinja (Shrine)” was established in the early 8th Century as a Buddhist temple. Since the mid-19th Century, following the official separation of Buddhist and Shinto religions by the new Meiji government, it has been a Shinto shrine (although, unusually, its name still makes reference to the Buddhist temple, Heisen-ji). The shrine is situated in the foothills of Mt Hakuba within the city of Katsuyama in Fukui Prefecture. By contrast, Seidai-ji temple, which is known for “Echizen Daibutsu”, Japan’s largest seated Buddha statue, is a modern Buddhist temple complex, built in 1987 with financing from a local businessman in Katsuyama City.
