It is an island located north of Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, and south of Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, with an area of 8 km2, a circumference of 28 km, and a population of approximately 3,000 people.
It is an island where contemporary art harmonizes perfectly with the beautiful nature and old townscapes, including works by Yayoi Kusama, famous for her polka dot patterns, and works by Tadao Ando, known for his beautiful architecture.
It is one of the islands that is the venue for the Setouchi Triennale, an international contemporary art festival held every three years on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
This year, 2025, will be the 6th year of the event. The spring session runs from April 18th |Fri| to May 25th |Sun|. The summer session runs from August 1st |Fri| to August 31st |Sun|. The fall session runs from October 3rd |Friday| to November 9th |Sun|.
The total number of visitors was 940,000 for the 1st. event in 2010, 1,070,000 for the 2nd. event in 2013, 1,040,000 for the 3rd. event in 2016, 1,180,000 for the 4th event in 2019, and 723,000 for the 5th. event in 2022 (a decrease due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic).
A unique feature of the Setouchi Triennale is that you can travel by boat or ferry and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea and islands.

香川県高松市の北、岡山県玉野市の南に位置する、面積8km2、周囲28km、人口が約3千人の島です。
水玉模様で有名な草間彌生さんのアート作品や、美しい建築で知られる安藤忠雄氏の作品など、現代アートが美しい自然や古い町並みと見事に調和した島です。
瀬戸内海の島々を舞台に3年ごとに開催される現代美術の国際芸術祭である『瀬戸内国際芸術祭』の会場となる島の一つです。
今年2025年はその第6回目の開催年です。 春会期は4月18日 |金| 〜5月25日 |日|。 夏会期は8月1日 |金| 〜8月31日 |日|。 秋会期は10月3日 |金| 〜11月9日 |日|です。
来場者の延べ人数は、第1回2010年94万人 第2回2013年107万人 第3回2016年104万人 第4回2019年118万人 第5回2022年72万人(コロナ禍の影響で減少)
瀬戸内国際芸術祭ならではの特徴は、船での移動で、瀬戸内の海や島々の美しい景観を楽しむことができます。
