⁴ᴷ Kagawa: Kotohira Station (香川県: 琴平駅) – Japan Walking Tour (January, 2025)
I’ve picked up my trip around various cities of Shikoku, the one I had to give up on last December. I took a ferry straight from Tokyo to Tokushima, then traveled through Kōchi and Ehime before arriving in Kagawa Prefecture—famous as the “Udon Prefecture.”
Right now, I’m in the town of Kotohira, best known for Kotohira-gū Shrine (also called “Konpira-san”). As the town at the foot of the shrine, it’s still pretty lively. Back in the Edo period, a pilgrimage to Konpira was said to be the next most coveted trip for common folk after visiting Ise Grand Shrine, so it must have been even busier in those days.
Just before the main approach to Kotohira-gū, there’s an arcade shopping street that’s really interesting—some of the old storefronts have been renovated into modern, stylish shops. Another unique feature is that there’s still a red-light district (soapland) in what is otherwise a traditional shrine town, something you rarely see anymore.
