It’s almost 14 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake.
This winter, I visited Ukedo Elementary School, a disaster relic, for the first time.
It’s as if time has stopped on the first floor of the elementary school.
Despite the extent of the damage, everyone in the school was able to evacuate safely thanks to the cooperation of the teachers and local residents.
In addition to the easy-to-understand exhibits and explanations that allow you to visualize the process before and after the earthquake,
there was a detailed explanation on the second floor of the school building about what the Ukedo area was like at the time.
We don’t know when an earthquake will strike, and we can’t prevent it, but it made me think deeply about what we should do when it happens.
This visit made me fully realize the importance of leaving the elementary school as it is.
東日本大震災からもうすぐ14年が経とうとしています。
この冬、初めて震災遺構の請戸小学校を見学しました。
小学校の1階はまるで当時から時間が止まったままのようです。
これだけの被害にあいながらも当時、先生方や地元の方々の協力により、小学校にいた全員が無事に避難出来ました。
地震発生前から発生後、避難までの経過が目に浮かぶように分かり易く展示・説明されているのに加え、
当時、この請戸地区がどうであったか校舎の2階では丁寧な説明がされておりました。
いつ来るかもわからず、防ぐことも出来ない地震ですが、そのとき自分たちがどうすべきか
とても考えさせられました。
これからも小学校をこのまま残すことの意義が十分に感じられた見学になりました。
