Beppu is very famous for its hot springs.
Beppu is famous for its hot springs and the “Jigoku Meguri” (Hell Tour) is a popular way to visit the hot springs.
The “Kamado Jigoku” in particular seems to have been the model for the Oni no Kakeru no Kai (The Devil’s Edge).
There are seven hells.
You can go there by car or by bus.
