Introducing sightseeing and gourmet food at the historic Yamanaka Onsen!

Yamanaka Onsen has a long history, and is said to have been discovered 1,300 years ago by the high priest Gyoki during the Nara period. Gyoki carved a Yakushi Buddha into a log and built a shrine to protect the hot springs. Many people visited Yamanaka and healed their illnesses and fatigue in the hot springs.
Time passed, and during the Jisho period at the end of the Heian period, Hasebe Nobutsura, the land lord of Noto, found a white heron healing its injured foot in a small stream in the shade of the mountains. When he dug the spot, a five-inch statue of Yakushi Nyorai appeared, and beautiful hot springs gushed forth. Nobutsura opened 12 hot spring inns here, and this is said to be the beginning of Yamanaka Onsen Ryokan.
Even longer ago, during the Genroku period, the haiku master Matsuo Basho visited Yamanaka Onsen on July 27, 1602, during his journey around Japan on the Oku no Hosomichi road accompanied by his disciple Sora. Basho praised the hot springs in the mountains as one of the “Three Great Hot Springs of Fuso,” alongside Arima and Kusatsu, and wrote the poem, “In the mountains, I would not pick a chrysanthemum, for the smell of the hot springs.”
Basho stayed in the mountains for nine days, visiting Yakushido Temple, soaking in the hot springs, and is said to have truly enjoyed the scenic beauty. Even now, more than 300 years have passed since then, this land in the mountains continues to have its roots in the abundant hot springs, abundant nature, and Japanese beauty and spirit.
