「大沼」は北海道の渡島半島南部、函館市の北約16km、七飯町にある湖で周辺の「小沼」「蓴菜沼(じゅんさいぬま)」「北海道駒ヶ岳」と共に、国定公園に指定されている。大沼は5万年前から3万年前の北海道駒ヶ岳の火山活動によって形成された湖であるが、一説によると1640年の北海道駒ヶ岳大噴火によって流出した溶岩で河川が堰き止められてできたとされている。湖内には「流山」（ながれやま）と呼ばれる大小120あまりの溶岩塊や丘の上部からなる小島が浮かび、特異な景観になっている[3]。江戸時代から小樽方面に抜ける交通の要衝であったが、1872年(明治5年)に宮崎重兵衛が旅館を開業してからは、観光客が多くなり、函館港から入国した外国人客も訪れるようになった。以来1881年(明治14年)には明治天皇が北海道行幸の途中に休憩で訪れるなど道南の景勝地として古くから知られている。
Onuma is a lake located 16km north of Hakodate city in southern Hokkaido, and the surrounding area has been designated as a “quasi-national park.” The lake was formed when a river was dammed by lava and mudflows caused by volcanic activity at Hokkaido Komagatake between 50,000 and 30,000 years ago. There are about 120 small islands of various sizes within the lake, creating a unique landscape. Since around the 18th century, it has been a key transportation hub passing from Hakodate to Otaru, but in 1872 an inn was opened here, and the number of tourists increased, and foreigners who entered the country through Hakodate Port also began to visit. Emperor Meiji also visited in 1881, and the lake became famous as a scenic spot.
