広島県豊田郡大崎上島町にある契島は、竹原市沖約4kmの瀬戸内海上に浮かぶ工場島です。
現在は工場建設に伴って埋め立てられたので一つの島ですが、元々は島が南北で2つにちぎられた形になっていたのが契島の名前の由来だと言われています。
契島は、東邦亜鉛株式会社 契島製錬所が所有しており、製錬される鉛の量は日本の鉛製錬量の40％以上を占め、自動車バッテリーの原料などに使用されます。
明治32年(1899年)に精錬所として操業を始めて以降、経営者が変わりながらも、100年以上に渡って稼働し続けているため、工場マニアの間では『生きた軍艦島』として人気が高い島ですが、桟橋を除き関係者以外は立入禁止とされています。

Chigirishima, located in Osakikamijima-cho, Toyota-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture, is a factory island that floats in the Seto Inland Sea about 4km off the coast of Takehara City.
Currently, it is one island as it was reclaimed for the construction of the factory, but it is said that the name Chigirishima comes from the fact that the island was originally split in two from the north to the south.
Chigirishima is owned by the Toho Zinc Co., Ltd. Chigirishima Smelter, and the amount of lead smelted from it accounts for more than 40% of Japan’s lead smelting volume, and is used as a raw material for automobile batteries, etc.
Since it began operating as a smelter in 1899 (Meiji 32), it has continued to operate for over 100 years despite changing hands, making it popular among factory enthusiasts as a “living Gunkanjima.” However, with the exception of the pier, access is prohibited to anyone other than those involved.
