「小樽運河」で知られる小樽市に、「地獄坂」という急坂があります。その途中に、ひときわ目を惹く教会があります。カトリック小樽教会(富岡聖堂)です(1929年～)。小樽市指定歴史的建造物にななっているほか、周辺の花壇とともに都市景観賞も受賞している、由緒ある教会です。この建物の魅力それにとどまらず、「建物上部の八角の小塔と、白い窓が少しメルヘンでとてもかわいと」、国内外の信者のほか、観光客の姿も見かけます。また、映画やドラマの露地になったことでも知られています。地獄坂という言葉と正反対なのが興味深い点の1つで、建物には「イエスキリストの救い」が溢れているかのようです。
In Otaru City, known for the Otaru Canal, there is a steep hill called Jigokuzaka (Hell Hill). Halfway up the hill there is a particularly eye-catching church. This is the Otaru Catholic Church (Tomioka Cathedral) (since 1929). In addition to being designated as a historic building by Otaru City, this venerable church has also won an urban landscape award along with the surrounding flower beds. Not only is this building attractive, but the octagonal turret at the top of the building and the white windows are very cute and have a slightly fairy-tale feel to them, and in addition to believers from Japan and abroad, tourists can also be seen on the hill. It is also known for having been featured in an alley in movies and TV dramas. One interesting thing about this hill is that it is the polar opposite of the term Jigokuzaka, and it seems as if the building is overflowing with the “salvation of Jesus Christ.”
