中尊寺は、岩手県西磐井郡平泉町にある天台宗東北大本山の寺院。奥州藤原氏ゆかりの寺として知られ、平安時代の美術工芸の粋を集めた多くの文化財を有しています。境内は国の特別史跡に指定されており、平成23年（2011年）には世界遺産に登録されました。
寺伝によれば、中尊寺は嘉祥3年（850年）、比叡山延暦寺の高僧円仁（えんにん）によって開山。その後、奥州藤原氏初代清衡によって造営整備が行われたと云われます。清衡の中尊寺建立は、ここみちのくの地で長く続いた戦乱で亡くなった霊を慰め、仏国土の建設という目的があったからでした。清衡は釈迦如来により説かれた法華経に深く帰依し、その平等思想に基づく仏国土を平泉の地に実現しようとしたのでした。境内には伽藍が建ち並び、その規模は寺塔が四十、禅坊が三百におよんだといいます。平泉はおよそ100年近くに渡り繁栄し、みちのくの地は戦争のない平和な時代が続きました。しかし、源頼朝と対立した源義経が平泉に落ちのびると、義経を保護した秀衡が病死し、四代泰衡は義経を自害に追い込みます。その泰衡も頼朝に攻められ、文治5年（1189）奥州藤原氏は滅亡しました。
その後、中尊寺は源頼朝の庇護を得て存続しますが、建武4年 （1337年）大火により金色堂を残してほぼ全焼してしまいます。江戸時代には仙台藩領内となり、伊達氏の庇護を受けて堂宇の補修・建立が行われました。寛文5年（1665年）には江戸・寛永寺の末寺となります。元禄2年（1689年）に『奥の細道』を旅する松尾芭蕉が、中尊寺の荒廃ぶりを見て嘆いたという逸話が残っています。
昭和25年（1950年）、金色堂に800年間、安置されていた藤原四代の遺体の学術調査が実施されました。その結果、中央壇に清衡、右壇に2代基衡、左壇に3代秀衡の遺体が安置され、右壇には、4代泰衡の首級が納置されていることが判明しました。
ここ中尊寺には、国宝に指定された建造物第１号の金色堂をはじめ、多分野にわたる文化遺産が今日まで伝えられ、東日本随一の平安仏教美術の宝庫と称され、国内外から多くの参拝者が訪れています。
中尊寺は、平泉毛越寺、松島瑞巌寺、山形立石寺と共に「四寺廻廊」という巡礼コースを構成し、みちのくの古刹巡礼の人気コースともなっています。

Chuson-ji Temple is located in Hiraizumi-cho, Nishiwai-gun, Iwate Prefecture, and is the Tohoku head temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism. Known as a temple associated with the Oshu Fujiwara clan, it is home to many cultural properties that represent the best of Heian-period arts and crafts. The precincts of the temple are designated as a special national historic site, and in 2011, it was registered as a World Heritage site.
According to temple legend, Chuson-ji Temple was founded in 850 by Ennin, a high priest of Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei. After that, construction and maintenance were carried out by Kiyohira, the founder of the Oshu Fujiwara clan. The purpose of Kiyohira’s construction of Chuson-ji Temple was to comfort the spirits of those who perished in the long-lasting war, and to build a Buddhist land. Kiyohira was deeply devoted to the Lotus Sutra preached by Shaka Nyorai and tried to realize a Buddhist land based on the idea of equality in Hiraizumi. The temple grounds were lined with a number of buildings, including 40 temples and pagodas and 300 Zen monasteries. Hiraizumi prospered for nearly 100 years, and the Michinoku region enjoyed a period of peace without war. However, when Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who had opposed Minamoto no Yoritomo, fell to Hiraizumi, Hidehira who protected Yoshitsune, died of illness, and Yasuhira IV forced Yoshitsune to commit suicide. Yasuhira was also attacked by Yoritomo, and the Oshu Fujiwara clan fell in 1189.
After that, Chuson-ji Temple continued to exist under the patronage of Minamoto no Yoritomo, but in 1337 it was almost completely destroyed except for the Konjikido (Golden Hall). During the Edo period (1603-1867), the temple became part of the Sendai domain, and under the patronage of the Date clan, the hall was repaired and rebuilt. In 1665, the temple became a branch temple of Kan-eiji Temple in Edo. In 1689, Matsuo Basho, traveling along the “Oku no Hosomichi”, saw Chuson-ji in disrepair and lamented the temple’s condition.
In 1950, an academic investigation was conducted on the bodies of the four Fujiwara generations that had been enshrined in Konjikido for 800 years. As a result, it was found that the bodies of Kiyohira, Motohira (2nd), Hidehira (3rd), and Yasuhira (4th) were enshrined in the central platform, the right platform, and the left platform, respectively, and that the head of Yasuhira (4th) was enshrined in the right platform.
Chuson-ji Temple is home to a wide range of cultural heritage, including Konjikido, the first building designated as a National Treasure, and is known as the greatest repository of Heian Buddhist art in eastern Japan, attracting many visitors from Japan and abroad.
Chuson-ji Temple, along with Motsu-ji Temple in Hiraizumi, Zuigan-ji Temple in Matsushima, and Risshaku-ji Temple in Yamagata, make up the “Shi-ji Kairo” pilgrimage route.
