Introducing Japan’s Hot Springs(Onsen).
Hot Springs Japan Series No.2 ” Gero Onsen”
Gero Onsen is one of the best 3 major hot springs in Japan. Gero Onsen was found
around year 900’s. However it has been stopped due to a big earthquake.
Tradition says, the Healing-Buddha who changed a figure into a white heron
found the new hot spring source in 1265, and Gero Onsen recovered.
Gero Onsen has been known for more than 1,000 years as a healing
hot spring with high temperatures, which are believed to be effective
in treating rheumatism and relieving fatigue.
Gero Onsen Shrine
Built in 1989 as an offshoot of Yudonosan Shrine inYamagata Prefecture,
is dedicated to the Gero Onsen and located inside the Ryokan Union Building.
The shrine is a small structure found close to Shirasagi Bridge.
There is a small hand bath alongside the altar in the shrine.
Gero Onsenji Temple
Located in Gero’s hills, is dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing,
who is said to have led the local people to discover Gero’s hot spring.
