Oshima Island, Mikuni Fukui Japan Nov 2024 [4K]
Ōshima (雄島) is a striking island located off the coast of Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, within the scenic Echizen Coast area. Known as the largest island along this coastline, Ōshima is famous for its unique geological formations and its deep cultural and historical significance.
The island, formed about 12 million years ago from volcanic activity, is surrounded by steep cliffs featuring columnar jointing, similar to the famous Tojinbo Cliffs nearby. Connected to the mainland by a striking 224-meter-long vermilion bridge, Ōshima is home to Ōminato Shrine, a site of worship for over 1,370 years. The shrine, located within a lush forest designated as a cultural property of Fukui Prefecture, is accessible via a flight of 78 stone steps and is considered a “power spot” for its serene and mystical atmosphere.
Ōshima is also noted for its pristine natural beauty, with paths winding through dense forests of evergreen trees such as tabu and shii. Visitors can explore a natural learning trail that highlights the unique flora and formations of the island, including phenomena like “crown shyness,” where tree canopies grow in a way that leaves gaps between them, creating a remarkable visual effect.
This island is not only a haven for nature lovers but also a place steeped in history and spirituality, revered as a sacred site by locals for centuries. Today, it remains a peaceful destination where visitors can enjoy the beauty of the Echizen Coast and reflect on its cultural heritage.
