The MBNA Alaska Airlines MasterCard is known as one of the best cards for rack up the miles quickly in Canada. With up to 30,000 Alaska miles as a signup bonus and a generous $50 cash back offer from Great Canadian Rebates, the MBNA Alaska is a perennial favourite among Canadian points collectors.

However, MBNA is also one of the more picky credit card issuers in Canada, especially when it comes to the number of recent inquiries on your credit file. In this video, we’ll take a look at what’s known as MBNA’s “5/6 Rule” and the particular set of strategies for pushing through your MBNA credit card application even if it gets declined the first time around.

We’ll also address a hot topic in the loyalty landscape as we look ahead at the second half of 2020: Alaska Airlines joining Oneworld, and the changes to the Mileage Plan program that we’re likely to see as a result.

While nothing has been confirmed just yet, I’ll offer you four main predictions for what I think might happen to Mileage Plan as Alaska joins Oneworld. Let’s see if I get any of them right!

  1. Great Video Bro. Do you know any good mastercard with a good signup bonus and is good in the long run?

  2. Just noticed your coffee table in the background. Is it from structube? lol I have the same one

  3. Thanks! Very interesting as I love Alaska air and their rewards program. PS as a west coast resident I can confirm that Alaska is also great to fly with!

  4. Is it easy for any student to get approved for MBNA credit cards? I have 700+ credit score, over a year of good credit history and 3 active cards in good standing. Do you think i will get approved for any of their card? Thanks in advance.

  5. Do you think it's worth applying for the card to get (another) sign-up bonus before they join one world? Or wait for a potentially better offer post-merge?

  6. Great video Ricky. I’m sure you checked to close the dresser drawer before the video.

  7. Hi Ricky. I used your trick opening the second Alaska WE. Although it was auto approved, MBNA didn't approve new credit for me. They automatically split 10k credit limit from my other MBNA card. Right now, I have 1 smart cash with 5k limit and 1 Alaska with 10k limit. If I want to do the cancel/reapply trick in the future, should I ask to increase the limit on the smart cash card first (afraid of HP to increase CL)? Question is a bit long. Thanks,

  8. I flew with Alaska out of Edmonton for the first time last year and was really impressed with them. After that I found your other video about their milage plan and it convinced me to sign up for the Platinum Plus card through Great Canadian Rebates. Can't wait to utilize the benefits when international travel picks up again. Thanks so much for these videos! 🙂

  9. I live in the US and its crazy how everything is different. Alaska air here offers Visa same as Costco. And there in Canada its Mastercard for both. Very interesting. 🤔

  10. Awesome content as always
And where did you get that tshirt bro? I’m really digging it

  11. Amazing video. Really find your material on par with the best travel videos out there. Thank you for your service!!

  12. CX is really stingy releasing seats to partner these days, so the sweet spot is technically gone… 🙁

  13. I got mt second alaska miles card. They split my credit among my 2 cards. Do I move the credit to my alaska card? Or does this product switch strategy only work a couple of times until you cannot split any further?

  14. I just signed up the card and waiting for approval. And since Alaska is joining one world I can use this card more often than my Aeroplan

  15. It astounds me how strict Australia's signup bonuses are. Eg, having ANY amex card percludes you from getting any signup bonuses, likewise with almost any other issuer. To churn, you basically have to forgo the bank for 12-18 months before you are allowed to get the points again. Downgrading the card won't cut it, you're still ineligible to any signup bonus from the same bank. I wish we have nicer rules like you have in Canada

  16. Do you think MBNA will change the signup bonus for the credit card after March 31?
