This is the Nakaumi, the fifth largest lake in Japan, which straddles the eastern part of Shimane Prefecture and the western part of Tottori Prefecture. Both the Nakaumi Sea and its adjacent Lake Shinji are brackish lakes, connected to the Sea of Japan by the Sakai Waterway. The salinity of the Nakaumi Sea is about 1/2 that of seawater, while Lake Shinji’s is about 1/10. Therefore, both saltwater and freshwater plants and animals are said to inhabit the lake.
When I saw this Naumi a few years ago, I thought it was a beautiful inland sea (I thought it was an ocean at that time), and I wanted to take a picture of it someday! That calm and clear blue water was a seascape that remained in my memory.
There are two islands in the Nakaumi, Daikonjima and Ejima, and the Ejima Bridge, often referred to in commercials as the “sticky slope,” is located here. The bridge may have been designed to allow large ships to pass through, but it certainly looks very steep when viewed from Ejima.
Such is the beauty of Nakamai, a truly beautiful place in the morning, afternoon, and evening, as long as conditions are good.

Welcome to Amazing Japan!
