Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido, was once crisscrossed with an extensive network of railway lines. However by the time the 1980s rolled around, decades of depopulation and lost industry finally caught up to them, with all but a handful shutting down.

This past summer we traveled up north with our bicycles and spent a month cycle touring throughout Hokkaido, searching out and following these decaying symbols of Hokkaido’s past.

In this first episode (of a planned four), we follow the Haboro Line, which ran on the northwest coast of Hokkaido, connecting the city of Rumoi in the south to Haboro in the north.

  1. At the encouragement of another commenter I actually contact NHK World, but they turned me down. Oh well, too bad.

  2. The Horonobe station looks well taken care of for being an abandoned location.

  3. Sorry if I wasn't clear in the video, but Horonobe Station is still in use for the Sōya Main Line. If I recall correctly, in all four of these videos the beginning and ending stations are still in use for other lines that survived being cut. The only exception I can think of is the Shihoro Line (the fourth video), as it's final station was way off in the boonies instead of heading to a city as did the other now-abandoned lines.

  4. This is a really really cool thing 🙂 Actually might have influenced me in deciding to move to Hokkaido ^^

  7. So, have you ever seen any ghost during cycling or especially in tunnel?
I'm not so sure, but I've ever heard that there are many ghost spots in Japan.
So seriously be careful. oh, wait it's 2011…

  8. hokkaido seems to have a beautiful countryside with all the greenery and trees. i first learned about hokkaido thru one manga i read several years ago called hana-kimi where one of the main characters, izumi sano was from there and how hokkaido is snow country
