Nov 15, 2024

The garden was built by the Buddhist artist Sesshu as a villa for Ouchi Masahiro, about 500 years ago during the Myokiji Temple era, and is now a designated national historic site and scenic spot.
Sesshu is famous for the anecdote of painting a mouse with tears while he was a novice at Hofuku-ji Temple in Soja City, Okayama Prefecture, but later he traveled to China to study and was known as the master of painting.
Joei-ji Temple was built about 500 years ago by Ouchi Masahiro as a villa, and it is said that he commissioned Sesshu to create the garden. Later, Masahiro made it Myoki-ji Temple, a temple to pray for the soul of his mother, but as times changed, it was merged with Joei-ji Temple, the family temple of Mori Takamoto, to become Joei-ji Temple.
